Some of the beautiful Graphic Arts & Design work on show at Dep.Art
A very busy opening night for Dep.Art on Friday night...
There is a time for departure even when there's no certain place to go.
Tennessee Williams, 1953
DepArt 2014
"Here we are at the departure gate. We are standing here, waving and smiling as our students walk through - to set off on their next adventure. The degree show is our biggest annual event and this is the moment when we celebrate the academic, and creative, achievements of our students. Our students have been on a journey with us and now it's time for a new journey to start. For some this new journey will begin with employment, for some it means further study, for others it is about moving into a studio or setting up a business. Etymology is the study of the origin of words and the way they have changed over time. The words depart, departure and department share a very interesting etymology. The word 'depart' comes from the Od French word 'departir' - to divide, to separate oneself or part from each other. It can be broken down into 'de-part' but not, as we have implied, into dep-art. Strictly speaking it is not related to 'art' - but our end of year show celebrates a dep(art)ure that has art at its heart. Departures mean change and they also often mean uncertainty or risk. As our student depart, this also represents a departure for them all. They are graduating, leaving departing, going on a journey but this is also a departure from the life that they have lived while studying with us. It is both the beginning of a journey and also marks a significant change for all." - Dr. Rebekka Kill, Head of The Leeds School of Art, Architecture & Design

Fooling around with Urban Angels
‘This is somewhat embarrassing, isn’t it?’
Urban angels are an organisation specialising in aerial and interactive performances. There work is playful, often comical, spontaneous and defying. In this workshop they wanted to open up relational performance and show how it can be utilised to work as a strong method in performance art. Relational performances require participation from onlookers relying heavily on its audience. They draw a lot of their inspiration from this way of working which is why there work is often erratic and improvised.
Through out the day they challenged our creativity with physical exercises. What seemed like childish games were actually acting methods which intern brought out our inner child allowing us to be more imaginative. This playful approach to teaching worked perfectly as everyone seemed to be having a great time and learning through experience. What I have learnt through this workshop cannot be taught any other way and because it has made such an impression on me I aspire to introduce it to my practice.

Level 4: Flash show exhibition – Graced with light at left bank.
On Wednesday 2nd April, the doors of former church ‘Left Bank’ were opened to the public from 5pm-7pm for the first year fine art student’s flash show ‘Graced with light’. Visitors were treated to a dynamic assemblage of work, made and exhibited in response to the church’s unique architecture and sensitivities as a gallery space.
Sculptures, paintings, mixed media, installations, projections, and performances were bought together under one enormous roof and for two hours that evening the church was turned back into a social arena, where visitors could view innovative beauty, philosophise over conceptual artworks, and watch engaging performance pieces by what I can only assume were two very chilly artists.

International Women's Day
On International Women's Day, students and staff from our school were joined by over 70 people at Broadcasting Place to parade a giant model of a bra through Leeds City Centre, where a ceremonial burning of the bra took place on Saturday 8th March. Built by Graphic Arts and Design students, the huge bra was designed as a playful comment on the mythic bra burning - a feminist statement which can be traced back to the Miss American Pageant protest in 1968. During the making of the bra, the students discovered that the vibrant purple, white and green colours of the suffrage movement just happened to be the Leeds Met colours too. The procession included Fine Art students with Harold Offeh who performed March in March, a piece made to explore the history of visual and performance culture in the international women’s movement. Looking at how the call for liberation, equality and suffrage has been communicated through protest actions, imagery, movement and song. Throughout the procession in Leeds, people were greeted and flowers were handed out to mark the occasion. Along Briggate, crowds of shoppers stopped to marvel at the spectacle of the giant bra passing by which raised a few smiles and cheers. The event followed on from the 'un'conference; Women Visibility and Playful Acts held on Thursday 6th March alongside Casey Orr's Saturday Girl exhibition at Gallery at Munro House. This was a day of talks, performance, film and the production of personalised supercapes for the bra burning event. This happening was set to inspire, trigger debate and celebrate in an environment of communal exchange and participation. Speakers were artist / lecturer Kiff Bamford, cultural studies principal lecturer Lisa Taylor, political cartoonist Jacky Fleming, artist collaboration Robinson Stirling, graphic art researcher Jo Hassall, author Helen cross, researcher Jocelyn Murtell and hosted by Dr Casey Orr, Jo Hassall and Dr Liz Stirling.
