The Barris Prompt Picnic will run from the first of August to the 7th of September! Prompts will be posted every other day in August, with a final week in September to catch up on the last prompts. It's a bit of a tight schedule during a busy time of year, so the idea is to have a chill, low-key fest - like a picnic, where everyone who wants to brings in a little something for all to share and enjoy. A moodboard, a playlist, fic, fanart, etc. are all scrumptious pieces of cake to share on our collective picnic blanket! 🫖🥧
Prompts are optional, however, so this can also be used as an opportunity to dust off those old WIPs about to be eaten by ants...

I use full fat Greek yoghurt and self-rising flour
Ratio by weight
Add a pinch of salt
Knead until no longer sticky, adding more flour if necessary
Roll them with olive oil instead of flour and fry in an otherwise unoiled, preheated pan (medium heat) (trust in the lord; it will seem like it's going to stick to the pan at first but they'll unstick in about 15 seconds)
Roll them thin but not too thin; mine take about 45 seconds on either side
Serving with garlic butter is also a very good option
yknow theres a lot of pressure to be successful, particularly on artsy kids whose professions are seen as useless unless theyre famous, but life is fucking hard and sometimes things dont turn out
but i think thats not bad. my dad has wanted to be a musician forever, and hes rly pretty good. but then he joined the military to get away from an abusive family, and then he got married, and then he got divorced, and a lot of horrible shit HAPPENED. he has ptsd and severe anxiety and he could never really get back on the horse. and he never made it as a musician, and now hes 53
but i grew up in a house full of instruments, and he can play all of them, and some of my earliest memories are of him playing guitar on the front porch and me thinking there wasnt a better musician in the world. so. even if you dont get to the stars, exactly, what you do isnt worthless. its not a waste of time if life is difficult and you cant make it, or if you arent famous, or if your work doesn’t influence thousands of people. it will influence someone
there are a million ways to be happy and a million ways to be a successful artist. we create what we do to enhance the human experience and relate to each other and improve ourselves. theres something to be said for just doing that,,,for the sake of doing it, yknow
My mother never became a professional artist. She became a social worker, then later taught emotionally disturbed children.
But our home was filled with photographs of wildflowers and wildlife. Spice racks, shelves, and other useful objects were adorned with small paintings. She taught me and my sister that we could make things beautiful, even if in small ways, and let us glue glitter and fake gems on our cheap kids furniture and make it ours.
Capitalism tries to say that art isn’t successful unless it makes money. But that’s not why humans make art.
We make art to convey emotion. To make an object or a moment or a story OURS. And making someone smile when they hear you sing, or look at something you made for them is as valid a reason for creating as any other.
Reblogging this too for folks with anxiety like myself who feel bad when they say they’re too busy but they don’t have every second accounted for doing something so they feel almost like they’re lying. Self-care goes on your schedule too, lovelies.

Last song: "Closer to Fine” by the Indigo Girls. I wish I hadn’t somehow missed this song when it first came out - “the less I search my source for some definitive, the closer I am to fine” might have helped with the anxiety resulting from not having life all figured out and plotted in my early 20s. The parts about wrapping “fear around me like a blanket” and the “ship of safety” metaphor are also pretty damn resonant.
Last show: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Alex Borstein is wonderful as Susie, and the final scene was sooo good. I also loved the final credits, with the actors’ names displayed across the NYC locations associated with their characters.
Currently watching: Rewatching Mad Men, which I never actually finished. I forgot how much I enjoyed this show!
Currently reading: Between books at the moment. The most recent one was The Testaments by Margaret Atwood.
Current obsession: Not really an obesssion, but I’ve been spending a fair amount of time learning crochet patterns on YouTube, particularly mandala-type patterns.

🔵 Scenario: summer thunder storm traps them inside. they play board games to pass the time.
📘 Scenario, choose your own adventure: a trip to the beach goes awry. Do they a) discover a body, b) encounter someone from Thomas's past, or c) get caught up in a smuggling adventure.
🔷 Scenario: AU in which Thomas is an exasperated teacher at a private school and Richard is PA to one of the school wealthiest benefactors. Richard has been charged with dealing with the appalling behaviour of the benefactor's trouble-making child.
💙 Scenario: future fic. Richard and Thomas move into a cottage on the estate. It’s perfect, except for being haunted by Carson.

Richard has a choice about whether to trust the footman (known gossip and schemer) with the King's secret and bring him into his schemes or part ways with him to protect the king.

We are very pleased to announce the third Barris-themed event, Blue Moon, running from the first to the last day of August 2023! There will be two full moons in August: on the 1st and on the 31st, which is both a blue moon and a seasonal blue moon. Both of these moons are also supermoons, which means they'll be closest to the Earth in their orbit, like Richard's work orbited him close to Thomas.
