who : quinn + anyone [ open ] where : founders green when : monday — welcome fair
quinn had been assigned to the freshman welcome committee this year as repayment for last semester’s mysteriously missing philanthropy hours, which sounded awful until you realized it mostly meant standing by a folding table in the sun and pointing vaguely while saying things like, go foxes! she was stationed near the quad with a clipboard she hadn’t looked at once, doing her best impression of someone who knew where things were. “okay, so orientation check in is … over there?” she said, pointing confidently in a direction that immediately made her second guess herself. “unless that’s the dining hall. um. they kind of all look the same at first. you’ll get it soon enough.” she flashed an encouraging smile just as her phone buzzed in her pocket, the vibration startling her enough to make her jump. she glanced down long enough to read REMINDER: philanthropy hours are being monitored this semester before groaning and shoving it back where it came from. “love that for me,” quinn muttered, straightening up as a somewhat familiar face drifted closer. “hi! welcome to cgu!” she chirped, nearly tripping over her own feet as she adjusted the lanyard. “what are you looking for? dorms? advising? your sense of purpose? because i can definitely help with … one of those. maybe.”
the fair was busy, which was a good thing, but there was a lot of faces and noise, and leo was just going with the crowd, which basically was the reason why he ended up where he was.
"i would've been happy if they had someone like you when i got here. i think the person who welcomed me asked if i knew where i was which was like valid, but they could've been a little nicer about it," he shrugged, at this point he was used to that. sometimes he just kind of had a blank stare. "but how do i find my sense of purpose? is that something you can teach?"
who: cecelia wentworth & muse
when: august 20th, around noon
where: welcome fair
cecelia takes exactly ten seconds to herself, retreating just enough to stand near the back of the zbz booth, where she can see everything without being seen too closely. the booths blur into a careful grid of color and ambition; voices overlapping, laughter rising and falling, hands exchanging flyers and promises. she tracks it all instinctively - who lingers, who leads, who follows. her phone buzzes in her hand with updates she’d already predicted: a headcount adjustment, a reminder about schedules, a note about a girl who tried too hard to catch the attention of zbz's sisters. none of it surprises her. it never does. she is mid-reply when she senses someone hovering close enough to intrude, hesitant enough to wait for permission. cecelia lifts her gaze slowly, assessing in a single glance before offering a small, measured smile. “ if you’re going to ask something, ” she says, voice calm and unhurried. “ now’s the window. ” brown hues drop to phone screen again, silently letting the person know she means it. “ i only have one. ”
one second leo was walking around with a bunch of papers that he was supposed to hand out, the next he was standing a little too close to the zbz booth, distracted by a shiny thing.
he straightened as cece spoke, like he had just been called on in class and had let his guard down for a minute, not paying attention.
"oh, yeah. sorry. hi," he said quickly, soft grin flashing as he lifted a hand in a half-wave, half-apology. "i didn't mean to, uh, just chill here, i promise. i was wondering if you knew where they moved the extra chairs? admin told us one thing, student life told us another, and now i'm pretty sure the truth is somewhere in between. and i swear that's my only question. i respect a limited window," he said before pausing, but of course he always fucking rambled on, "okay, technically that was like two sentences, but one topic so it should still count."
open starter | welcome fair
the gamma gamma tau table is, generously, an organized disaster. a crooked banner flaps in the breeze, someone’s speaker is blasting music a little too loud for admin comfort, and there’s a suspicious amount of candy being handed out with zero explanation. somehow, miraculously, no one from student life is hovering. a small victory lucas chalks up to a handful of vague promises, a lot of charm, and the strategic use of the word community. he’s posted up at the front like it’s second nature, sleeves pushed up, grin easy, leaning across the table as if every person who stops by is already halfway to being a brother. he’s in his element. cracking jokes, nudging his brothers when they get too feral, hyping up gamma gamma tau like it’s the best accidental decision anyone could make. a group of freshmen guys wander off laughing, freshly wowed by stories that are probably exaggerated but spiritually accurate. lucas watches them go with a satisfied nod, then catches someone else’s eye lingering nearby. without missing a beat, he lifts a hand and gives a casual wave: the kind that says yeah, you’re welcome here without actually saying it. confident, playful, impossible to miss. “hey,” he calls out, already turning his body toward them, eyebrows lifting like he’s letting them in on a secret. “don’t be shy. we’re friendly. mostly.” the music swells behind him, laughter breaks out at the table, and for the length of the welcome fair, gamma gamma tau looks exactly like what it is: loud, messy, magnetic, and somehow held together by lucas callahan standing at the center, selling chaos like it’s home.
leo had sprinted across the quad to grab his metal water bottle where he thought he had left it. turns out, it was in his backpack the whole time. but he wanted to grab it before the fair started, or else he'd forget. and with the promise of the fact that he'll be right back, he virtually was. however, he almost slipped as he came to a stop back at the table, lucky that he didn't knock anything or anyone down.
after he caught his breath, he gave lucas a nod. "we're definitely friendly, dude," at least friendly enough to keep recruiting members for every class. "i told a few freshmen in the cafeteria on the pizza line to come stop by and that joining will help 'em even after they graduate and they looked at me like i had five heads so i mentioned that we have free candy here," he wondered if they'd even stop by, "crazy that that's what draws the crowd." candy was definitely what lured him. "you think we're gonna have a good turn out?" he didn't want to admit that he was nervous, especially now that this was the year that he was in charge of something, but getting pledges was the main goal, and getting people to the table was the only way to do that.
𓂂 𓇼˚。 • ( charlie gillespie , cis man , he/him ) ─── was that leonardo brooks i just saw sprinting across the quad ? weird — the himbo didn’t leave behind their usual trail of always losing his backpack, bringing back socks with flip flops, and making friends wherever he goes , … according to their student file, they’re a twenty two year old senior who’s been studying communications ever since they moved from charleston. as the social chair of gamma gamma tau , leo, is known for being loyal, but anyone who’s spent a few late nights listening to them blast stairway to heaven by led zepplin, around railside skateboard, knows just how impulsive they can get as the semester drags on. this year, they’ve been oddly obsessed with skateboarding, typical for a sagittarius sign, but still — every time i see them on mtv, all i can think about is that hair tie that his niece gave him they’re always carrying around.
