i'm going to make a life i love even if it's not the one i expected or thought i wanted. and i am going to let myself be proud and grateful of what i do have. i am allowed to be proud of it without other people realizing the gravity of what i have accomplished in scale to my life and abilities. i do not need permission.
I'm sorry you had to bottle up all your feelings inside in order to function. I'm sorry that's what you had to do to survive in a time where stopping to take the time to feel and express them would have had severe consequences.
I'm proud of you for making it though that time, but I need you to stop suppressing your feelings now that you're here.
Your feelings are important. They are not bad. They are not here to hurt you. They're here to tell you what you're experiencing, and you need them. So take them out of their boxes, please. Use them.
“That’s what people do who love you. They put their arms around you and love you when you’re not so lovable.”
— Deb Caletti
Do not hide away the part of yourself that’s unhappy, bothered or hurt just because you feel like doing so will make others feel more comfortable. You don’t live to make others comfortable, you live for yourself, which means you owe it to yourself to be honest about your true feelings. The only way to let an open wound heal properly is to take care of it, not to ignore it.
Learn to separate your wants from your needs. You may want to lash out, but sometimes what you actually need is to step away from the situation. You may want to keep scrolling, but sometimes what you actually need is to put down your phone and do something more fulfilling. You may want to have another alcoholic drink, but sometimes what you actually need is a big glass of water. You may want to stay up late, but sometimes what you actually need is a good night's sleep. You may want to isolate yourself, but sometimes what you actually need is to reach out. You may want to postpone that chore, but sometimes what you actually need is to power through and get it done. Sometimes we gotta sacrifice instant gratification for our long term happiness - and learning when to do so is key to taking good care of yourself.
