These two fellas were found on a typical collecting venture in very not so typical circumstances. To find two species just inches away winterizing under bark was purely luck! I thought they were the same species with lots of variation, but experts confirmed these to be two very closely appearing species that happen in my locale.
Very exciting group photo and the first I've ever photographed two jumpers at once together like this, but the potential was too high to waste!
I hope you guys love these beautiful girls as much as I do

Also called Red harvester ants, they are a native insect of the Southwestern U.S., known for collecting seeds, which it stores in its nest for food. These ants are orange to reddish-brown, can deliver a painful sting, and are characterized by bare, circular areas around their nests where vegetation is cleared.
Above, a Bold Jumper, Phidippus audax, which I spotted while fishing! Photographed on my phone 🤳
