The Lioness by Elisabeth Alba 7″ x 8″, watercolor and acryla gouache on Arches watercolor paper For the first Month of Love 2016 challenge, Heroes, I immediately knew I had to draw a portrait of one of my favorite characters, Alanna, nicknamed the Lioness, from Tamora Pierce’s Song of the Lioness quartet. I first started reading that series when I was around 12 or 13, and I thought Alanna was this incredible, strong female character, which I hadn’t seen much of in the books I was reading. Also, these books, as well as Ms. Pierce’s other books, inspired my career, since they were exactly the kind of books I wanted to make illustrations for.

Splendid armour, splendidly painted and splendidly worn - look at the way that hair is braided up out of the way rather than romantically flowing (like too many pix) where it can catch on things or be caught by opponents.

I might quibble slightly about the lack of mail protecting that armpit - it would usually be part of an arming doublet, like this:

…except that any quibble is completely outweighed by how clearly the artist has shown how a particular style of helmet goes on and off.

Simpler helmets just go on like a hat and are secured by a chin-strap, but the helmet in the painting is a more elaborate style. It’s very clearly a late medieval / Renaissance “close-helmet”, which opened at the front like this:

The Young Duchess is tour-de-force in watercolour, arguably more accomplished than Cowper’s similar oil painting because of the difficulty of rendering textures with this less versatile medium which does not allow the layering of glazes to capture the lustre of silk or tactility of fur.
