Media Training anon here lmao. I think there's a marked shift in how members present themselves on camera across 2019 - 2021 (aka when their international popularity started skyrocketing). It's a gradual progression but if you compare post-2020 content and pre-2020 content, the change is obvious (esp for non-scripted material like lives).

As for how Yunho got over it and Mingi didn't, I don't think Yunho has got over it so much as he has learnt to hide it because here's 2024 him cringing at himself though in a much more refined manner. My theory is that Yunho developed a separate persona for himself to effectively code-switch into for doing idol things (i.e., what you call Idol Yunho), while Mingi is still mostly Mingi in everything he does. To me, they are two opposite ends of the spectrum in this regard with the rest of the members falling somewhere in between.

So. Um. Media Training Anon, I know I asked, but now I'm spooked by this outpouring of information. Why do you have this entire dossier of Yunho cringing READY TO GO? Is there some sort of Elders of Hottoekism watching and waiting for me to get inducted to higher levels of hyperfixation? I think what he can't stand is really bad acting and awkward writing. That's what's happening. Seonghwa and someone else is delivering badly written lines badly.

The net effect of all this, from watching the very young Yunho knowing how Present Yunho behaves as an Idol is actually bittersweet. His ability to not get cringed out anymore is a professional accomplishment, but almost all of his early reactions seem fully like an ordinary boy's responses to seeing guys he know get all soft over a girl or whatever, you know? This sharply critical Yunho, the one who can't stand it and will not let anything go by, is now completely hidden from view, under the mask of Idol Yunho. Naturally a smart ass, could've been the mean oppa (and if he'd been the leader and not HongJoong, that may have been his role), but now he's the thing he is, for which my dog face cushion suffers.

sorry if this has been covered at some point before and i missed it (though i read through p much all the yeosang thinkpieces you posted) but the recent talk of ateez relationships activated my gossip RAM and reminded me of this kinda infamous vlive from their early years (the important part starts at 47:10 and includes multiple perspectives of yeosang distancing himself from wooyoung because wy gravitated a lot more to san at that time, a yungi b plot that makes me feel like mingi might have (had) similar gripes with yunho seemingly not putting as much effort into their friendship as mingi, and a moment toward the end of the soap opera where mingi quotes yeosang saying to him in private, according to the translation, "san really likes wooyoung," which prompts them to change the topic). needless to say id love to add more thoughts on this whole ordeal to my mental storage 😋

Oh this is a really important piece of the Ateez foundational canon, isn't it, which they kind of want to disavow a little bit, now, don't they?

I always feel of two minds about footage like this, in which I assume I am not alone. I'm glad to have it - it's fun to have, to think about, to discuss (well away from anywhere the actual humans in it can ever see it) with other fans. On the other hand, I know I would feel completely paranoid and, well, like a peeled egg to have footage like this of me in the permanent record of the internet. Not sure what to do about that, but I guess I'm putting a pin in it.

The overall impression I had from this the first time I saw it and still have now, is that Wooyoung is really the essential member of this group. Without his energy, openness, and instinct for dramatics, there would be no Ateez reality content to speak of. All Hail Wooyoung.

The 5 things that pop out for me now on rewatching this are going to be very specific to me, and hopefully are at least entertaining for you to read:

Yeosang confiding in Mingi about something that is emotionally bothering him. That it happened at all is quite astonishing now, given the very minimal amount of interactions they've had in reality content since. My initial sense as a newbie fan was that Yeosang and Mingi had the least to do with each other. The whole, glare-and-toss-earphones story of Yeosang's first encounter with Mingi, when Yeosang told it, was not leavened with some softener like, But we're close friends now or Mingi explained why he did all that later and I understood or anything, you know? But Yeosang feeling a little bit forlorn at the rapidly passionate friendship that WooSan created with each other and wanting to talk to Mingi about it is INTERESTING. I want MORE EXPLANATION! Like, with all due respect to WooSan and their fascinating dynamic, that is not the most interesting thing going on in the dialogue.

Mingi revealing that conversation for content. Was that a an error? Did Yeosang think it was fine or did he see it as a faux pas, or even worse, a betrayal? Yeosang played it off fine, but Yeosang's persona is the least altered from his earliest days - that is, he had much of the current polish and hard-to-crack Idol veneer he has as an adult even back then - so it is impossible for me to gauge. Mingi doesn't say what he said in response, or what the conversation that ensued afterwards was. Why not? Why does nobody ask??

Yunho the Boy before he was The Idol and maybe he'll go back to being this real person and can we cope? <- I'm not even sure this sentence is English but I'm sure you'll understand me anyway because we are Atiny. The sudden outcry of None of you 99ers seek me out! is also something that wouldn't really happen now, not on camera. And if I were to go into overthinking overdrive about it, I wonder if the Being Taken for Granted, Being Such A Good and Unproblematic Boy He Disappears was a vise that was closing around Yunho even then.

Seonghwa is a genius. I mean he generally is, but I'm thinking back on the other Logbooks and other footage of this era where Seonghwa was trying very hard, against HongJoong's resistance, to forge a partnership between them. That was strategically very smart. Even though all these people are at maximum 2 years apart, aligning himself (forcefully, almost) with Hongjoong allowed for Matz to both be the mediators in this incipient argument that was brewing. Also sidebar - it's lowkey hilarious to me how the three people least involved in whatever ... this is - Matz and Jongho - are dressed exactly the same, down to the twinkly necklace with a small pendant.

I was tricked into coming here vs You owe your spot here to me (Perennial Yungi Standoff) which started very, very early, apparently, and doesn't seem entirely playful. This is something that Mingi has said more than once - that it's Yunho's fault that he's in Ateez, that he's at KQ. And Yunho always has the same rebuttal - that Mingi should be grateful to Yunho, because he owes this spot to Yunho. His guidance? Advice? Encouragement? Example?! It's unclear. Mingi has said this three times - that but for Yunho he wouldn't be in Ateez: Twice negatively, and once positively. This is one of the two negative examples. The other one was during that Wanteez episode where he says he joined KQ because Yunho told him they didn't have strict 'start' times, to which both Yunho and Hongjoong retort that this was only instituted because Mingi joined - they hadn't had a 'call time' before that. And during their Ateez 8-Face Japanese content, where Mingi calls Yunho 은인 같은 사람 ( He's basically my benefactor) for being the key to Mingi being in (but starting in? returning to after hiatus? remaining with? unclear) Ateez.

he auditioned for kq with yunho, but while yunho joined straight away it took some convincing (from yunho) to get mingi to join as well

meanwhile woo "escaped" from his old agency and was determined to make it work with kq, he was gonna fight tooth and nail to be part of ateez and make friends with them

but mingi will not "make friends" just bc the company tells him to. "friend" for him means something very specific, and woo had to fit this specific definition to be accepted

the fact that it took just 2 weeks says a lot about mingi's heart AND woo's ability to just smash walls down with his genuine personality

and also yeosang's prediction of "give him 2 weeks" was so damn accurate?????

but tbh i feel like yeosang's behavior was a huge contributor to woo finding those first 2 weeks hard and traumatizing and mingi just gets used as a scapegoat (as usual)

I haven't seen this about Mingi - that he was in a different company in the way Woo and Yeosang were - on the korean internet. They said he went to the same dance school as Yunho (and that Mingi's father had a career as a backup dancer, for a Gen1 kpop group!)

To answer your question above with a source I can back up - Mingi has said that he is not someone who is at ease with or good at ambiguity. Uncertainty, grey area, either-or are all things that make him uneasy, and he wants to decide one way or the other. The relationship between kids who want to be in show biz and are good enough and good looking enough to be finalists in an Idol pre-launch group is nothing if not ambiguous - they are going to be potential teammates and coworkers at an intensely intimate level (including cohabitation) that rarely occurs in other professions, they have to project liking and getting along with each other while competing for airtime, center stage, extra-curricular contracts, and public attention. If I were to write my usual Ateez Is a Highly Political Workplace RPF (because that's where I live, obvy) I would say Mingi chose to behave as a rival and competitor before debut to those he saw as (accurately) as being rivals and competitors, and once they were all on the same (pirate, heehee) boat so to speak post launch, he switched over to We are Teammates mentality.

And I would say Wooyoung never entirely forgave him for this line drawing, whereas Yeosang, with his subtlety and capacity for character assessment, understood.

This was such an interesting ask and response! I hope you don't mind a few extra thoughts because thinking about Mingi seems to be my hobby these days.

I know very little about the MBTI test that the members use as one facet of their idol identity, but Mingi being the only one in the group to be a "T" and him explaining that as him being very literal makes me understand him better. He cites that as a reason why writing lyrics for the Treasure-era albums were so challenging ("what do you mean, we're pirates?") and in one of his interviews with Seonghwa, who is an "F" they show how different they are by responding to different social prompts.

(I would actually be very curious as to your impression about the HwaGi relationship, because the fortune teller rated them least compatible and I think Mingi disturbs Seonghwa in a way he can't quite shake, despite how much he cares about Mingi and how they've learned to understand each other. Seonghwa is so crafted, and Mingi being next to him exposes that aspect of his idol persona).

All that's to say is that your analysis of Mingi tracks for me, because he appears to be very literal in his approach to relationships and once he commits to someone as a friend, he is extremely loyal.

It also means he's unable to lie about someone's status in his life. One of the more interesting moments I've come across is when Yunho on a live jokingly asks Mingi to pick between him and another of Mingi's close friends and Mingi is unable to give the tactful/fan-service answer in that moment.

Later, Yunho goes live and plays it off but was clearly SHOOK by the incident.

To bring it back to anon's ask, I do think that once Mingi decides you're one of his people, he is endlessly accommodating (unless it involves money lol) and holds no grudges over past disagreements -- unlike Wooyoung, who even now brings up things Mingi said/did during their first two weeks!

It's also funny that Mingi was rude to San too...

and yet San credits Mingi (and Yunho) for taking him under their wing and teaching him to dance. Clearly no grudges there.
