For all its faults Tumblr has truly ruined all other social media for me because my friends all have Instagram and are all trying to get me on Instagram more but every time I open Instagram there are like fifteen things screaming for my attention and when I get over myself long enough to start scrolling it's like. Where is my chronological dash. Where is the following-only option. Who are these people. Why are there so many videos. Everyone is screaming at me. And then before I know it I'm thirty minutes into scrolling and I haven't seen a single thing that I actually care about. At least on Tumblr when I see stuff I don't care about I know someone I follow has found a new interest.

Remi works with a hesitant, erratic violence, creating a piece as light and fluffy as she is, and signing her work by hole-punching it with her teeth.
Timmy uses bold, strong lines to evoke some kind of powerful event, echoing his powerful presence and loud voice.
Nubbins, truly inspired, creates a high-energy piece that symbolizes the void where his brain should be, surrounded by chaos and mischief.
Kona, a reclusive avante garde artist, refused to work with me around. Only in quiet solitude did she create this haunting, introspective work.

in happier pride news i actually found this deeply heartwarming
that's solidarity baybeeee
Further context: Durham city council (Reform UK) cut funding and support for Pride. The Durham Miner's Association and other trade unions raised enough money for Durham Pride 2026 to go ahead - a direct call back to when Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) raised money for mining communities when Margaret Thatcher seized union funding during the miner strikes of 1984-85.
At the 1985 Labour party meet, the motion to support LGBT rights as a party was passed due to a block vote from mining unions.
Stephen Guy, the chair of the Durham Minersβ Association, said that when it became apparent Durham Pride was under threat, he took it upon himself to βencourage the trade union movement to step up and do the right thing, and stand shoulder to shoulder with the LGBT+ community [β¦] They not only raised funds for us, but came to our communities, uplifted our spirits when they were down, and showed their solidarity.β
I have always loved this deep connection between miners and queers. We can talk about political beliefs etc etc but a lot of times I think we actually get our political beliefs from our relationships.
The magic of this is that when you see someone in need and stand together, no matter how different you may feel from each other, the bond that you forge through the experience can go through fire.
one big thing i think people outside fandom (like, all fandoms, fandom in general, not any particular one) tend to misunderstand is they know it's a subculture of people who are weirdly deeply invested in fictional media, and they hear about drama caused by people in those subcultures being unhinged in not-fun ways, and they think the unhingedness comes from the fact of being overinvested in works of fiction.
which is a natural assumption, but in my experience that's not really the case? like in my experience the drama llamas in fandom are usually not the ones who are just genuinely very deeply into the fiction. i've known people who are basically thinking about star trek or x-men comics or supernatural pretty much 100% of their free time and ime that type of person is usually very nice and surprisingly functional in their regular life. when someone's a constant nexus of fandom drama it's usually not that they are obsessed with the actual work of fiction the fandom is about, it's at least one of the following:
what they're obsessed with is not the source material but their unhealthy parasocial relationships with one or more of the people who created it
what they're obsessed with is not the source material but some elaborate shared-universe subset of fanfic about it that's only barely related to the original at this point, and/or an esoteric reading-against-the-text reinterpretation of the source material (often if the canon is active and ongoing this leads to becoming actively hostile toward it for its inevitably increasing failure to conform to their preferred fanon)
what they're obsessed with is not the source material but the fandom itself and gathering clout within it, so that the source material basically only exists to them as a tool for scoring points in increasingly arcane fandom disputes
and very often you get the same person doing 2 and sometimes even all 3 of these, and that's where the trouble really starts
holy shit I've never seen this articulated but OP is EXACTLY RIGHT.

jin guangyao is blowing up his own life and those of many others in order to become the filialpietymaxxer huaisang is doing exactly the same thing jiang cheng is a mostly less destructive example but it is still the source of his many torments and even wei wuxian feels a bit tortured about his confucian duties but wen ning lowkey does not give a fuck. he doesn't blink at betraying his lord and his sect he's not even conflicted about it. he'll stand by his family/sect members that he thinks are being wronged but if he thinks they're doing the wronging? forget about it. and either way he has no plans for vengeance or cashing in on blood debts. they had to make him addicted to playing second fiddle because he'd be too op otherwise, he understands the narrative intuitively
something really delightful about a character with two salient coexisting traits of "likes being told what to do so he doesn't have to worry about all that" and "will disobey anyone about anything as soon as he doesn't agree with what he's told to do" in a series where most of the other characters are both more outwardly rebellious and less likely to be as morally independent in practice
The thing to me about Wen Ning being so willing to go against his family is that I think it emphasizes how trapped he is in the narrative rather than reduces it. Because one of the major themes of MDZS in my mind is debts and repayments, being bound by what you owe others. For many of the other characters they consider their most important debts to be to their families or the people who raised them, which leads to the above behaviors. And this aligns with the values of the society they live in so when they go above and beyond to repay the perceived obligations they are understood and seen as virtuous by the people around them.
Meanwhile Wen Ning is super willing to betray his family and leader - but notably a large part of his motivations come not only from pure morality but also out of a sense of personal loyalty to Wei Wuxian. He puts himself at great personal risk in part because WWX was passingly kind to him once! That is even more notable than the lengths that JGY goes to for his family!
He's not very filial but to some extent this just means that his choice to honor his perceived debts in this way is a more deliberate action, something that goes against the expectations around him and cannot be as easily understood by the people in universe who might grant sympathy to somebody like NHS. But the fact that he still ends up following WWX through his whole afterlife because that is what he believes he is owed is, to me, an indication that he just as much, if not more, entangled in these webs of obligation that strangle most of the cast.
i have a lot of thoughts on wei wuxian, the wen siblings, and how they are affected by their debts to each other (i, for one, donβt think that debt repayment was a major motivation for wen ningβs intervention at lotus pier or for him following wei wuxian post-timeskip) - but i agree that itβs something that burdens all of them throughout most of the story, despite everyone's best intentions.
but i do want to put my two cents in because wen ning and wei wuxian parting ways in the end is so important:
βI built one for the two of you at the Burial Mounds, but it was burnt down,β Wei Wuxian said. βWeβll make a trip to Qishan too.β He turned to Lan Wangji, but before he could ask for the latterβs opinion, Wen Ning declined. βNo, itβs fine.β Taken aback, Wei Wuxian asked, βYou donβt want us to come with?β Lan Sizhui quickly chimed in. βWei-qianbei, just go with Hanguang-jun.β Wei Wuxian wanted to say more, but Wen Ning said, βReally, itβs fine. Wei-gongzi, you have done enough.β After a brief pause, Wei Wuxian asked, βWhat will you do after youβve finished all that?β βSend A-Yuan back to the Cloud Recesses,β Wen Ning replied. βThen I can take my time pondering what to do next. As for what followsβ¦let me go my own way.β Wei Wuxian nodded slowly. ββ¦Just as well.β
wen ning doesn't end up following wei wuxian through his whole afterlife. wen ning leaves.
and the way he leaves - freeing himself from revolving his life around wei wuxian any further, from having to protect him at the expense of his own personhood - but also explicitly freeing wei wuxian from all further obligations, from seeing wen ning as his responsibility, from having to choose between happiness and duty for once in his life - is important as well. "you have done enough".
(even though his rejection made wei wuxian sad! but what can you do? wen ning, a healer, is no stranger to breaking a badly healed bone so it can be set clean, even if it hurts.)
the toxicity of being trapped in a cycle of debt and repayment is indeed a major theme, which is why wei wuxian's relationship with lan wangji ("between us, there is no need to say thank you and sorry") is so heavily contrasted with both of his other relationships, which jiang cheng also eventually understands by keeping the truth of his golden core loss to himself, and thatβs why wen ning dropping all of this on wei wuxianβs head and walking off into the sunset was absolute king shit on his part. my man saw the webs of obligation around them and went at them with an angle grinder as soon as he could, and he really deserves more recognition for it.
has anyone figured out how to turn off the thing where you love your pet so much it slides inexorably into grief-borrowing
βFor me this glass is already broken. I enjoy it; I drink out of it. It holds my water admirably, sometimes even reflecting the sun in beautiful patterns. If I should tap it, it has a lovely ring to it. But when I put this glass on the shelf and the wind knocks it over or my elbow brushes it off the table and it falls to the ground and shatters, I say, βOf course.β When I understand that the glass is already broken, every moment with it is precious.β

May 2026 CPNs round-up π°πͺ
another month has gone by! it was a kinda quiet time cpn-wise for the fandom β not to say we did not have candies to enjoy, but i think this is expected as years go by. and of course, we always have content from the boys. same drill. i will be doing a recap of the stuff that was talked about in clowning circles!
β’ there were some serious clowning going on related to GGβs post on 5/3. aside from us being so sensitive when it comes to posts with the π, i think the detective work has some points. if you donβt buy it, thatβs fine, i just love how the π has become a thing in this fandom and a symbol or romance and longing.
