Mayor Castiel Novak is running for reelection. As such, it's slightly awkward that he's in love with Dean Winchester, his opponent's son. Things become even more awkward when a photograph showing the two of them in an intimate moment is leaked to the press.
But wait, it gets worse: Dean discovers that his father's campaign leaked the pictures in the first place. Now, Dean and Castiel must decide if they're ready to own their relationship, no matter the effects on Castiel's political future.
Excerpt:
โFucking Crowley,โ Castiel mutters to himself as he thumbs back to his recent calls and hits the dial button. โStupid fucking Crowley and his fucking money and his fucking suitsโโ
Laughter sounds over the line as soon as the call connects, and Castiel instantly feels better at the sound of it. โYou alright there, sweetheart? Gotta be something bad, to have you swearing this much.โ
โYes, itโs bad,โ he says. โAwful. Horrible. Devastating. I wonโt be able to see you on Thursday.โ
โMy point exactly.โ Castiel gestures expansively at the general situation, though there is no one here to see. Perhaps he should reconsider his stance on video calls, if only where Dean is concerned.
โWhatโs the conflict?โ Dean asks.
โWell, two things, as it turns out. Iโm meant to be going to the ribbon-cutting for a new community center, and then Iโll need to leave for a fucking fundraiser at Fergus fucking Crowleyโs house.โ
โUgh, heโs the worst,โ Dean says, and this is the kind of thing that has Castiel increasingly convinced that Dean is the love of his life. โImportant donor though, unfortunately.โ
โNot as important to me as you,โ Castiel says, almost desperate to get this point across, because even five months into this whatever-theyโre-doing-together, he canโt quite believe someone as gorgeous and smart and generally wonderful as Dean is willing to put up with him.
โI know, sweetheart,โ Dean says, soft and quiet, and Castiel wishes Dean were here with him, sitting in the passenger seat, steady eyes fixed on him and their hands linked together. โYouโre a busy man, Mr. Mayor. I knew that going in.โ
I love you. The words sit on Castielโs tongue all the time these days. They have become a permanent part of the landscape of his mouth. He should be charging them rent, or perhaps adjusting the zoning code in the general vicinity ofโ
Jesus. He really needs to work on getting more sleep.ย
