As a biochem student and certified nerd, I feel the responsibility to bestow this knowledge upon as many people as I possibly can:

You do NOT need to "earn" meals through exercise.

You know why?

Because exercise only accounts for about 20% of your calories. The majority of the calories your body burns, it uses to keep itself alive. It uses them to power your brain and metabolism. In fact, your brain ALONE is responsible for spending about 20% of your calories.

Your BRAIN, just to keep itself going, uses up just as many (or even more!!!) calories than all the exercise you do.

Your RESTING metabolic rate is responsible for burning between 60 and 75% of your calories.

You don't just deserve food because you're working out. YOU DESERVE FOOD BECAUSE YOUR BODY NEEDS IT TO STAY ALIVE.

Think I might delete this blog. I don't have osdd. I think I've got it all wrong. I dissociate constantly and I feel like I've been in a state of dissociation since my mental health got really bad last winter. But I don't think I have osdd. Something is wrong, but probably not this.

Eating toast for dinner instead of cooking is better than not eating anything at all.

Using mouthwash instead of brushing your teeth is better than not taking care of your teeth at all.

Wiping yourself with a damp cloth or baby wipe instead of showering is better than not bathing at all.

Doing only one out of five assignments you need to turn in is better than not submitting anything at all.

Talking to a loved one on the phone is better than not talking to anyone at all.

Playing your favorite video game, listening to good music, or reading a book instead of "grinding" is better than not doing anything at all.

Don't beat yourself up for not being "productive enough". A little productivity is still productivity.

i am driving myself crazy bc I think I gave myself osdd bc I learned about it in depth a couple years ago and related to it and thought i might have it but now i think i just convinced myself i have it (feigned osdd) and that the alters in my head are just my different internal monologues that everyone hears esp with mental illness.

Saying "I can't do that" isn't always self depreciating negativity. Sometimes it just means that you've come to terms with your own limitations and learned to respect and accommodate them - which is actually a good thing!

scared i gave myself alters by learning about did/osdd and that i can't avoid thinking about what i think are alters for more than a week or 2 and what if i am just labeling my mood swings or misunderstanding my symptoms

The FAST skill is useful for working to communicate in a way that preserves relationships while also maintaining one’s own self-respect.

be Fair - Validate your own emotions as well as the person you are communicating with.

Listen to others’ needs but also do not avoid voicing your own needs. Another person’s wants and needs are important. So are yours. Try to keep both people in mind, and try to be open to compromise, but do not allow your desires to be ignored. Compromise may allow both of you to get what you need.

don’t Apologize unnecessarily - Many people over-apologize, or apologize when they haven’t actually done anything wrong. They may apologize for having an opinion or for disagreeing, or to calm conflict or soothe anger.

This can lead to undermining one’s own self-respect, and may also make you seem insincere when you have good reason to apologize, and you are really sorry. If you apologize for everything, it may be hard to tell when you actually mean it.

Stick to your values - Don’t do things that go against what you are sure is right for you. Don’t go along with things just to impress a new friend or please a new partner, if they are against your values.

If they push you to give up your values, maybe that relationship isn’t right for you.

be Truthful - Don’t tell lies. Don’t stretch the truth, or exaggerate, or make up excuses.

Making a habit of being untruthful often has a way of coming back to bite you, and of harming relationships. It’s better to avoid it completely.
