Fault Lines
Exploring Jumin's grief in the aftermath of the secret endings and V's death.
✦ Word count: 1851
✦ TW: Alcohol use
It has been one year since the collapse of Mint Eye.
It is only in the evening, after a day of work, as Jumin is eating his dinner in silence, that he remembers the anniversary.
He has spent the last year trapped in a twisted time loop of memories that overlap his day-to-day activities. He is still there, in the helicopter, he is still walking into the compound, he is still hearing the screams. Before he wakes up in the morning, he knows something is wrong, even if he can’t place it. He is still trying to change the ending.
Everyone looks at him with sad eyes and talks to him in repulsive tones of pity, even after they’ve finished giving him the endless sorry sorry sorries he is apparently due.
Everyone treats him delicately, speaks in hushed tones, shares his personal tragedy between themselves, and it frustrates him deeply in a way he doesn’t know how to express. Perhaps what he needs to escape this horrific time loop is for someone to grab him by the shoulders and shake him hard until all the scattered pieces fall back into place. But everyone keeps pitying him, and he is still trapped.
Ugh this made me ill 😭
The grief he goes through is so understated and often pushed aside. This is so beautifully sad.
I’m not even doing Seven’s route why are we sexting in front of Jumin???
There are so many chaotically hilarious moments in Mystic Messenger, but this will always be in my top 5.
Seven, you mental bastard, ily 🤡
Raffy is fucking ruthless!
(after the 'he takes 5 pictures of you' achievement)
This is his punishment for using all the hot water.
Are you okay, Xav?
just realized we finally get to see what each of their underwear looks like up close
Reblogging for science 🔎
I love it when Jumin gay-baits Zen 🤣
Too Quiet
TW: Mentions of divorce, Angst
Zayne Li x female reader
Choose your own ending at the bottom!
“I want a divorce.” the words echo in the silence, bringing the clatter of silverware against plates to a grinding stop. Green eyes stare at you, unreadable as always “Why?” he asks, setting down his fork “I want a divorce.” you repeat, keeping your gaze on the food in front of you “Yes, you already said that.” his voice is tense, but still somehow calm “I would prefer a proper answer instead of repetition.”.
You fidget, trying your best to stay strong. This had been a long time coming but the anxiety of broaching the topic kept you silent for months. He folds his hands under his chin, waiting for your explanation.
“We both know where this marriage stands, there’s no reason to drag it out.” a part of him truly doesn’t understand why you’d make this request, but a larger part knows why. The late nights, terse conversation, fleeting interactions at meals or rare questions about errands, and separate bedrooms on opposite sides of the house. The two of you had been living as roommates since the marriage certificate was signed and it was clear that you had enough. Regardless of the distance between you two, he genuinely thought the marriage would be fine. You were well taken care of, a housewife without anything to worry about, always having enough money to buy whatever you want, free reign and full control over the six bedroom, three and a half bathroom home, two cats to keep you company as well as a maid that comes in bi-weekly to tackle larger tasks.
“I see.” he wipes his mouth with the cloth napkin you had so carefully folded and stands up “I’ll contact my lawyer in the morning.” he lets his gaze run over you before turning away, noting the tremor in your hands as you grip the edge of the tablecloth and how tightly your lips are pressed together. As he enters his room he can’t help but wonder just how long you had been thinking about this, had you wanted a divorce the entire five years you had been married to him?
He unclips the cufflinks on his sleeve, tucking them into the navy blue box you had given him on your first wedding anniversary. He claims it’s out of convenience, that it’s easier to use the ones you gave him instead of looking for another pair. Next comes his tie, carefully folding it next to the links. Another gift from you, for his birthday, a tiny slice of cake embroidered on the back, thoughtfully out of sight to keep his appearance professional. Finally, his watch, the last gift you gave him, Christmas that time. A delicate engraving on the inside of the metal bar that showed their wedding date.
Zayne stares at the dresser, the physical embodiment of your effort displayed in front of him. He rubs his face, suddenly exhausted, not even bothering to change out of his clothes before climbing into bed.
You stay seated at the table until your feet go numb, the sharp tingling breaks you out of your haze and you begin to clear the table, scraping the plates clean. Still taking the time to prepare a lunch for your soon to be ex husband before loading the dishwasher and heading to your own room. A sharp contrast to the rest of the house, clothes thrown on the floor, empty ramen containers on your desk, your bed unmade. Here you weren’t a dutiful housewife, you were just a woman.
The marriage was arranged, both families agreeing on the auspicious union. You had obliged, your naive heart holding hope that he would be sweet and kind, that you would learn to love each other the way your parents had when their marriage was arranged.
The ceremony was beautiful, you had cried, ruining your wonderful makeup. He didn’t cry. A brief kiss on the corner of your mouth after exchanging vows, just close enough that it looked real. The afterparty was spent seated next to him while family members gave you gifts and well wishes. Afterwards he drove you both to his house, showing you to your own room and promptly walking away. Even now, five years later, the marriage still hadn’t been consummated.
The first year you really did try, you tried to be the perfect wife just how your mother had guided you to be. You gave him thoughtful gifts and hung up his jacket as soon as he got home, greeting him with a cup of hot tea or fresh pastries. No matter what you did it was met with a cold nod and a quiet ‘thank you’ but nothing more. After the first year you gave up, fulfilling your wifely duties of cleaning, tending the house, cooking dinners and packing a lunch for him, but nothing more, if he noticed that he no longer came home to a kitchen smelling of baked goods or that his slippers weren’t placed by the door anymore, he never said anything.
The breaking point for you was when you found out there was a hospital function, a celebration in honor of Doctor Li’s success and major contributions to his field. Instead of taking you, he took a colleague friend. Who upon dropping off a slightly tipsy Zayne, was immensely shocked to find a woman in his friends home, and doubly shocked when you revealed you were Zayne’s wife. It was clear then that Zayne had never once worn his wedding band to work, and even further, never told anyone outside of his family that he was married.
You peel off your clothes, shaking out the stiffness from your shoulders, keeping your posture perfect around Zayne always left your back aching.
Yanking a sleeping gown over your head, you flick on the tv tucked in the corner of your room and flop into bed, allowing yourself to finally relax. You tuck a pillow under your head and turn on some mindless reality tv show.
On the other side of the house Zayne lies in bed, unable to fall asleep even though his body craved rest. Perhaps the sage green wallpaper was just too interesting for his brain to settle down.
No of course not, his wife just asked for a divorce and instead of fighting back he just gave in, agreed like they were discussing the weather. Finally his eyes drifted closed, an ache already forming behind them.
The next day was quiet as usual. The bento you prepared for him was missing from its dedicated spot in the fridge and an empty coffee mug was left on the drying rack. A delivery of packing boxes had arrived as well, they were leaning against the porch waiting for you to claim them. You drag them inside and up the stairs to your room, preparing to start uprooting your life as soon as the papers are signed.
