a little recap | the last two years 🥀
Lennon's life in Barton Point had been full of secrecy from the moment she stepped off the plane. A runaway bride, hiding from reality in a small town in Maine, thousands of miles away from the place she once called home. Finding refuge in her aunt's house, Lennon tried to rebuild her life, but found herself stumbling every so often, held back by the past she was trying her hardest to escape.
A little over a year after she moved to Barton Point (April 2023), Lennon received news that Archie, her ex-fiancé, was in a relationship. The news came in the form of a phone call from her parents telling her "not to worry" and that they'd "fixed the mess she made." After a lengthy and difficult phone call with her siblings, they explained that their parents had been telling people in their circle that Lennon and Archie had had a beautiful relationship, but realized they weren't well-suited for each other, so they got a divorce. Archie was away on business trips too much, and Lennon felt lonely. Archie wanted children, and Lennon did not. Any other question that came up was swiftly avoided or glossed over with another lie. "Where have Lennon and Archie been living this past year?" "Oh, all over the world. Canape?" "Didn't they talk about children during their 5-year relationship?" "I'm sure they did, but things change! They were children themselves when they got together. More wine?" Archie's dad had done his part as well, sending him on month-long business trips to sell the lie, to avoid the painful reality of having their son nearly left at the altar on his wedding day.
Up until that point, she hadn't allowed herself to fully process the heartbreak of leaving Archie behind, of her broken engagement, the wedding that could've been, because it came with a feeling she wasn't equipped to deal with: regret. She knew that marrying Archie would mean feeling suppressed and trapped for the rest of her life – not by him, never by him! – but by the world they lived in. Lennon didn't regret leaving, but she regretted leaving the way she did and breaking a very good man's heart in the process.
Then Archie came to visit around the time they would be celebrating their second wedding anniversary (February 2024). He begged her to come back to London with him; they could get married, or screw getting married, "let's just live together, Lemon." But Lennon had a life here now. She'd grown a garden at her aunt's place, built a greenhouse for her flowers, had a job she liked, and she was finding herself. Finally. She had friends and family– found family, but more than she'd ever had before. She begged him to stay, but he couldn't. So she gave him back her engagement ring - the one he'd insisted she keep - and this time, he took it back.
Lennon retreated deeper into herself when he left, into the shell of a girl she was back in London. She had no one to talk to about this, and there was only so much Laurie could do. She lived her life almost on autopilot for a couple of months, trapped by the lie she told to survive in Barton Point. Then one day, not more than 6 months later, she received a phone call that felt like a stab in the heart. Archie was engaged. She was gorgeous, and he looked happy, and Lennon didn't know what to do with herself.
Her garden died. She quit her job. She stopped leaving the house. Laurie was gone on a book tour, so the one person she could talk to wasn't there. He r siblings were busy with school– they couldn't just go to Maine. After avoiding phone calls and texts for a couple of weeks, her friends started to worry that something was wrong. But she felt a kindred spirit in Sean, so when he showed up at her door to ask if she was okay, she let him in. She told him everything; her real name, her story, about Archie... it was hard, but a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. Sean's kindness and understanding allowed her to open up to more people. Not everyone took it well, but she was grateful they listened at all.
Lennon started going to therapy again. She went back to London for the first time this year to attend her sister's graduation. She mended relationships she'd broken when she disappeared, and she's doing a little better now. Even though people know she's Lennon Hawthorne and not Brooks, she's deciding to keep Brooks. It feels more true to who she really is than Hawthorne ever did.

"That's what I meant by five." Axel says, after she spoke. He was with Hattie for quite awhile and it took him just as long to get over it all, it may hurt at times but nothing a night out with someone couldn't easily fix. "Don't worry about it. I've been told I have a great ear." As annoying as that was for him. "The hell happened anyways? That it was unexpected and earth shattering? Curious."
Lennon let out a soft laugh. "You do seem like a good listener," she said. "Well..." she took in a deep breath and sighed, trying to decide how much of the truth to give him. "It's not my story, really," she lied. "A friend from London. Amelia. They were together for five years, they were talking about getting married, moving in together- all the stuff you talk about when you've been in a relationship for a while. But then, all of a sudden, she broke up with him. She told us she felt stuck, she couldn't do it anymore, and that was it. He was part of our friend group too, so I saw him occasionally, and he was devastated. She was the love of his life! You know? But now... he's dating someone new, and it's quite serious- not- not a rebound. Right? And I'm offended for Amelia! She's still- healing from it, and he's moved on. It's been about..." she paused. "About a year now," she said, unable to mask the sadness in her voice realizing how much time had passed. "I don't know, I feel like it's... soon. To move on from- that."
[Sean nods, understandingly.] Yeah, a-alright. But, uh, garden? Sounds cool. [He nods, although it made him feel a twing of sadness as well. The garden that he had in his back yard, which Minnie did, it was wilted away by now. It would be nice to look at something nice once more, though.] Did you help make it? [He asks, referring to the garden.] Ringo... I take it because of The Beatles? [He asks, with a soft smile as he holds his hand out to the dog for pets before continuing on walking. Some fresh air was nice after being holed up in his house.] Um, hmm, ch-change my number for starters. Apologize to a few people...pay others. [He grimaced, the thought of going back to the motel weighed heavily on him. Sean breathes in deeply.] And uh maybe, hopefully... get my jobs back. [He shrugs lightly but doubted highly of that happening. He never gave a warning, just never showed up for months. And maybe he also had a change of heart if that's what he wanted to do anyways, it was all...very up in the air right now. But he was figuring it out. Trying to.] Anything new happening around t-town? [He wanted to get the topic off him for a bit.]
I did! You'll see it when we get there, but there's a field just- filled with trees behind Laurie's house, but it was missing something. And I was starting to lose my mind not having much to do here, so I made the garden my project. It's pretty beautiful, and I'm very proud of it. [She smiled.] He is! Although Laurie was the one who picked the name; he's technically her dog. Arrived long before I did. [She smiled] Surprisingly a coincidence we're both named after Beatles, although my parents have always denied I'm named after John Lennon. [She listened to Sean and nodded as he listed things off.] Well, if there's anything I can do to help... [Lennon trailed off and gave him an encouraging smile, nudging him lightly.] Oh, hm. [she bit her lip as she thought] Well, weather's been quite nice lately! So lots of people have been going down to the beach. There's been a couple of shark sightings, though, which no one is thrilled about. [she hummed, trying to remember what else had happened recently that was worth talking about.] Oh! Some people got stuck in the cove for a couple of hours the other day because it started raining. They got rescued once the tide went back down with not so much as a scratch or a bruise on them, but still! Pretty scary. They got interviewed for the local news, so they're kind of celebrities in Barton Point right now.

Asa was surprised by her response for a split second and then transitioned to a chuckle and smirk. “That’s alright. I know I have memorable looks.” He teased. “So, which dessert you thinking of to get?”
Lennon chuckled. “Sure. But there was also a very tall man yelling at you over- something. Hard to miss and hard to forget!” She smiled. “And I can’t decide. I know I want something chocolate-y. What do you reckon would be good?”
NORMAL PEOPLE (2020) Episode #1.5
[Sean gives her a small smile at that. He was glad to hear it as well, though a part of him was wondering when the other shoe will drop. He focuses on her now, though, as she speaks.] Yeah, me too. [He nods before swaying back and forth on his feet a bit] Is it - Is it because of Valentine's day? [He asked softly and carefully. He nods, remembering the last time they saw each other. It seemed like a long time ago but not really at the same time.] Y-Yeah, but I'm back now. There's a-a-a lot of stuff I need to do still. Thought I'd get some fresh air first. I'm glad you're the first person I seen, though. Can I walk with you?
[Lennon smiled.] Kind of. It definitely doesn't help. I, um... [she pursed her lips and shook her head, deciding not to get into it. Not yet, at least.] Maybe we can talk about it later. Over drinks? I'll definitely need one. We can drop Ringo off at my aunt's and– actually, we could have drinks out back! We have a pretty spectacular garden, if I do say so myself. [she chuckled.] And I'm really glad I bumped into you too. [she said with a soft, warm smile.] We both are! Aren't we, Ringo? [she asked and glanced down at the dog, who just wagged his tail in response, happy to be included.] We'd be honored to have you join us on our walk. [she said and continued on their path] So... what kind of things do you need to do now? Anything I can help with?
"Yiiiiiiiikes. Throw that man straight into the dumpster!" Benny wasn't a pig. Neither was her brother, Lev. But she couldn't speak about either of them without risking it all. "It's pretty easy to find men for that purpose. Bars, clubs, Tinder."
"They've been together for quite a while now, though! So I think- it's one of those things where- I guess I'm okay with it as long as they get married and live happily ever after, you know? Have 10 kids, 3 dogs, at least 5 cats..." she trailed off with a laugh, looking up as their bartender poured her another glass of wine. She thanked him with a smile and then turned back to Annie. "To be honest, I haven't really- tried at all. But I have met a lot of guys here since I moved last year, and none of them have even- flirted with me. At all! The vibe I've gotten from them all has been very... brotherly. Which is frustrating when you're- you know," she chuckled. "Have you had any luck on the apps? That's the one thing I haven't tried."
"...Five?" Wayne echoed as an answer. He'd went to the tavern hoping not to be bothered but wouldn't turn away some conversation. "Guess it also depends on the person." He shrugs, finishing his food.
"Five... months? Years?" she asked, a wild look in her eyes. "I don't know! I feel like even a year is too- little. Not enough time to really get over someone you were with for five years." She furrowed her brows. "Sorry, I'm bothering you. I just- this has been bothering me all day."

Asa was currently deep into a double shift at Wilton’s, having been put on the morning shift and then asked to stay until close. Something about his manager being ill? Who knows. He just kept repeating to himself that the money would be worth it, sat at the till by himself just scrolling through tiktok. He only lifted his head up when he saw your character walk in, shooting a smile at them. “Hiya.”
"You're still here," Lennon said, surprised. "Sorry!" God, was that creepy? "I- I came in this morning to buy some things, and I saw you- working," she explained, flustered, knowing she probably made it worse. "And I'm back. Forgot dessert," she smiled.
michelle-finnelly:
“Oh wow. I would say that five years is probably enough time but that sounds like a bad break up.”
“No, no, no, sorry, I must’ve not- explained myself very well. My friend was in a relationship that lasted five years, they broke up very suddenly, it was- disastrous. Big break-up, a lot of drama, he was apparently really sad about it, but– there’s rumors that he might be dating again. And I was talking to my friend trying to figure out whether... well, whether it’d been enough time since the break-up for him to be this serious with someone else.”
