I honestly find the height difference to be that much more significant. Because in the show, Sam is presented as this big, strong, tall man… but whenever he’s around Dean, he turns into that small and vulnerable little boy that only HE sees.

It’s amazing to see the dynamic when he’s with someone else that’s not Dean (like come on, even Ruby has pointed it out many times AND you can’t tell me she hasn’t observed Dean’s behavior and characteristics in order for Sam to trust her) versus when he’s actually with Dean. It’s very obvious he has control over Sam in every way possible.

I truly think that if Dean was the taller one and Sam was the shorter one, the dynamic and symbolism wouldn’t be as impactful. It would’ve been too obvious and too on the nose in my opinion.

it is insane how so much of the fandom just does not get it.

and top sam / bottom dean because 'sam is bigger' and 'dominant with women in bed' is such a boring, surface-level take. dean can and does throw sam around like a rag doll! physical size has never equaled power in their dynamic. dean holds the authority, the permission to cross sam's boundaries whenever he wants. that's the point.

the way sam is scared of dean in so many scenes is not subtle. it is child-scared-of-an-abusive-father scared. the flinching, the appeasing, the way he makes himself smaller even when he is literally taller. acting like dean's punching bag and actively urging him to unload his rage. that is the core of it. and the fandom turning dean into this uwu fragile princess and erasing the fact that he is canonically violent, coercive, and dominant specifically with sam? major ick.

and i do not think dean wants to be vulnerable and bottomy with sam. his siren was a sub. he likes acting like john, especially in later seasons. he gets off on being sam's father figure. season 3 dean may joke about liking when sam takes control like that, but it only ever happens when sam acts like a worried mommy and we all know dean wants to be mothered. the roles are still there. the power imbalance does not go anywhere.

sam being the taller and bigger one and being the (battered and stockholmed in later seasons) sub bottom is just the best part aesthetically because it is the most honest reflection of their roles and actual power imbalance. anything else flattens the dynamic into something safe and palatable. and their relationship is not safe. it is not an equal, normal, healthy gay love relationship (this is also why they do not switch, in my opinion). that is why it is compelling!
