⨳What it means to be an Uzumaki - 176k - He knows his name, Uzumaki Naruto, but what does it mean? Where does Uzumaki come from? Is that really even his name? It canât be a standard name they give orphans, because even when he still stayed in the orphanage, he was the only one with that name. Plenty of kids had no last name at all, which makes it more believable that Uzumaki is his real family name.
But what does that mean? Who are the Uzumaki? Is he the only one left? How can he find out? Were his family shinobi? Merchants? Regular civilians?
He is determined to find out.
And it kind of spirals from there in ways he never could have imagined. Who knew that posing a simple question would change his life zo dramatically?
2. ⨳A troublesome proposal - 57k - Shikamaru Nara always had a plan, but this one was certainly going to be the one to get him killed. When Naruto Uzumaki is forced into accepting a loveless marriage proposal, Shikamaru sacrifices his own happiness to ensure the future of Konoha. As someone who was sexually attracted to intelligence, Shikamaru never in a million years thought that he would fall for Naruto, of all people.
Five times Shikamaru found Naruto extremely attractive and the one time he did something about it.

4. â¸It's a slow burn - 12k - Shikamaru never really thought of Naruto, at least beyond the typical 'oh yeah, there's that guy.' At least until Naruto got up in his space and made that face and well, that bothered Shikamaru now didn't it? Relationship building (ish), some small angst, fluff, and rounding out in some solid, lovely smut.
5. â¸Crepuscular Rays - 19k - It takes Shikamaru a little while to realise he's fallen in love. In comparison, it takes Naruto barely any time at all. But that's only after Shikamaru finds it in himself to confess in the first place.

6. â¸Chronically Underestimated - 12k - Five times Ino, Shikamaru, and Naruto were underestimated, and one time they weren't.
Asuma was confused when he got his genin team assignment. For more than one reason. Heâd been given the InoShikaCho trio except there was no Cho. Instead Naruto Uzumaki was placed with Nara and Yamanaka.
He knew very little about the Nara and Yamanaka clan abilities or how to best use them. Naruto was another story altogether. The jinchuriki of the village with academy records that barely constituted passing. Why would such a weak and unknown variable be put with such powerful clan genin? None of it made sense.

Nara tend to become fixated on one thing in life. They can't choose what or who they become fixated on. For Shikamaru, he fixated on Naruto at an early age.
8. â¸The Shadow's Fox - 107k - Naruto has been alone all his life, and he wasn't so sure if it was even worth continuing, but then one shadow user changed his mind. This is a ShikaNaru story. Don't like, don't read. Will contain a few mature scenes, so beware.

He is pushing thirty, is hunched over a desk most days, and has no prospects in the love department whatsoever. For a multitude of reasons, Shikamaru decides to propose to Naruto on a Wednesday afternoon. Surprisingly, Naruto says yes
11. â¸Shinobi Foundations and Childhood Explorations - 128k - Naruto and Shikamaru are being shaped into Shinobi even as the adults around them seek to contain the fallout of them being bound together by an age-old Nara trait.
12. â¸The questions in between - 29k -
The Academy smells just the same as the other new buildings in the village, a cacophony of dust and paint that has Naruto wrinkling his nose. His eyes glance across the unmarked walls and he struggles to remember the signs of wear that had decorated the old Academy with life. It seems the change is unending.
He catches the discerning look that Sakura shoots his way as they reach the final landing, a strange uneasiness pushing him to avert his gaze. Instead, Naruto finds his attention drawn to a lone figure standing at the end of the hallway, leaning against one of the walls that frames the doors of the Hokageâs office. Shikamaru looks up at their approach and a wry smile pulls across his face.
Naruto doesnât even register the tension straining his shoulders until itâs gone, waves of relief rushing through him all at once.
The war is over and Naruto struggles to find his place in the aftermath.
13. â¸Caged - 104k - After another attack Naruto learns of Kurama's existance and despite his young age decides freeing him is better than staying where he is. While in the Sanctuary of the Nara compound he learns more about Kurama and his Birth (Eventual ShikaNaru later on)
14. â¸Hiding from the scary girls - 11k - In which Naruto comments that, "Nara men have pheromones that attract scary women." And Shikamaru thinks back through his life and decides that he may have a point. But...is it a blonde thing instead?
15. â¸It's rotten work (but not to me) - 68k - It is doubtlessly true that Shikamaru Nara is excessively lazy. However, it is also true that he is extremely devoted to those who have earned it.
Despite knowing this fact, it's not until he's managed to land himself in the middle of leading the reconstruction of their city that Shikamaru realizes just what lengths he's willing to go for Naruto's heart.
But exhausting as it is, he finds he doesn't mindâ especially if it lets him finally find the strength he needs confess his feelings for the other man.
Aka: Shikamaru finds his motivation, and it's shaped a lot like a certain jinchĹŤriki.
16. â¸It's so damn cold (so why are you warm?) - 19k -
âLady Tsunade.â He began slowly. âYou do realize what the weather is like outside, right?â
Tsunadeâs eyes flicked to him. âYes, Shikamaru. I realize. Iâm not blind.â
âIt snowed all night.â Shikamaru pressed. âThe paths are buried, visibilityâs low, and youâre asking us to walk a whole day in that.â
âItâs a dayâs worth of travel in normal conditions.â She corrected. âWith the snow, it might be slightly longer.â
Tsunade orders Shikamaru and Naruto to go on a mission together. But it's January and it's so damn cold outside.
17. â¸to see the hate you give - 68k - Not a typical wrong mission.
Naruto loses his eyesight, or maybe his eyes? And you know what they say, when you lose one sense your others are heighten.
Or a case where suddenly not being able to see the cold stares of the villagers brings change.
18. â¸The undeniable existence of a sun - 12k - One minute, Shikamaru's life was a grayscale and the next, he was living in an explosion of color.
The sky is bluer and the shape of the clouds is more prominent, the smell of the grass intensifies and the air sings instead of simply beating against his body. Suddenly people have faces and among them all one undoubtedly shines above the rest.
Namikaze Naruto is a sun on earth. His chakra spreads throughout his body and illuminates the darkest corners in Shikamaru's soul.
