This might end up being a long post, but i havent really found anyone else talking about this topic when discussing the book, and i find it quite interesting. I also have a question at the end:)

I went through the book again to find examples in which the characters are compared to or named after animals, to make sure it lines up, and wrote the correlating characteristics:
Silas represents a rabbit: Timid, scared, smart and curious. (And the rabbit in his ribcage obvs lol)
Mary is a wolf: been described as wolf like, fangs, agressive, fierce and protective.
The speakers/ lord luckenbill are pigs: ânothing more then a cut-open pigâ, greedy, bold, leader, and filthy.
Louise is a hare: cowardice, timid, easily startled, perceptive, and a bit trickery (the ribbon and charlottes trick) also literally in her name âLouise hareâ.
Isabella is a crow: her black hair, highly social, adaptable survivor, very protective of their young. âThat crow over there is isabellaâ
Frances is a fox: âthe fox to maryâs wolfâ
Charlotte is a spider?: i had some trouble with her, but im guessing her name is a âcharlottes webâ reference, which lines up with er helping/being loyal to the speakers/ pigs. Solitary, cunning, patient and calculating.
And then of course ms. Forrester, represents the harsh environment they are stuck in.
I feel like writing the characters with a corresponding forest animal, really adds more depth to their actions and behavior, since they are all trying to survive in their own way, and itâs also just great symbolism:)
The students are forest animals because they want to run free and be themselves, while the speakers want to domesticate them.
One i am struggling with tho is daphne, i cant find anything on her, and it is hard to pinpoint a spicific animal just by her personality, so i would love suggestions!
