reminder that the terms femme and dyke were coined in the 50’s and 60’s by the lesbian community. but in the 50’s and 60’s the term lesbian was the only wlw label there was, it was applied to bi women* as well. bi women* were instrumental in the creation of modern day lesbian culture. so if bi women* in the 50’s and 60’s could call themselves femmes and dykes, why can’t bi/pan/poly/queer women* call themselves femmes or dykes now? the only difference between then and now is that they now have more accurate words to describe themselves, they’ve always been there. lesbain history and the history of bi women* are inherently tied together bc up until not too long ago bi women* were just lumped in with lesbians. it’s not appropriation if they were part of and (positively) instrumental in the creation of the thing….
