truly so transparent that buffy, when it really matters, only trusts dawnie (an extension of her girlhood, goodness, and innocence) into spike's hands.

and when buffy is dead everyone who ever knew her let's him take over taking care of her because they all fucking KNOW he's what's best for her,,

he's a monster until it comes to protecting the most precious part of buffy. and even after he's (almost) done the unthinkable, buffy still goes to him to take care of dawn.
