Things that make me go UGH

A mean looking mother of two comes to our back to school department during the busiest hour of the busiest weekend. She proceeds to ask where our most popular item is. And when I say we’ve sold out, she asks if other stores have sold out. (mind you I am working cart after cart of stock, sweating). I don’t know, she’ll have to go to said stores. Then she asks if we can CALL THE STORES FOR HER. Yeah Hahaha sure thing. She got mad because I didn’t personally take out my cell phone and call the other stores. Because of course she would.

I’m not even fucking trained on register. Why do people assume I’m a cashier? Yes there are registers in Garden center. That does not mean that the person watering the plants has to ring up your month’s worth of groceries just because you decided to park on the opposite side of the store from grocery.

IT IS SO GREAT TO HEAR THIS OMG. that’s what I dealt with in my garden center. And it was even worse over in sporting goods bc people would literally come over there with two carts full. I didn’t have a bagging wheel and I didn’t have a scale, so groceries were impossible. Then they’d get huffy with me. Like excuse me? There are registers MEANT FOR THIS UP FRONT.

And there’s always that one guy that mumbles “the lines inside are crazy long”, but when you go inside 3 minutes later it’s a desert wasteland.

Oh God this. And worse yet, I used to have a manager who would get on my ass for not having shit done. And they actually used to give us a cashier. But of course no one that could sell alcohol. And worse yet customers could never ever read the big old signs that said “Can’t sell Alcohol!”. And even worse yet they’d hide it, so they could throw a fit and demand someone that can ring it up for them be brought out 2 minutes ago. And I never ever ever found a polite person about this. Because no one with a sense of decency was going to trouble the ill-equipped people to handle their $200 worth of groceries. Which saddens me. Because I usually find rude customers are the minority.

As time goes on, I believe more and more that every person should be required to perform at least a month of Customer Service. Maybe that’d get people to appreciate the hell that actual cashiers and customer service techs get subject to every day.

Our VP came in today, as he does every Saturday. Apparently he saw me drinking from my water bottle, when no customers were around mind you, and fussed at my one manager, who yen fussed at me over it. God forbid I drink water and be a fucking human.

Last job i worked at, some lady called asking for coupons. I worked at a fancy Italian sit down restaurant. And when we told her we dont hand out coupons and that she has to find them in magazines or local newspapers like how you would normally find any coupon, she got really mad because she could not comprehend the fact that restaurants dont hand out coupons to random customers because then they would go out of business because they arent making enough money lol

Today some guy called 4 minutes to closing and spoke to my coworker. He acknowledged we were about to close and he just wanted to browse for something, he did not know specifically what he wanted just wanted to LOOK. He must have asked my coworker something along the lines of “would you stay open for me” and my coworker said “well I guess I’ll have to.” Closing time comes, doors lock automatically, I change the sign, lock the gate, and am shutting down lights and my computer and this guy comes. He started knocking and waving and I just pretended I didn’t see him because WE ARE CLOSED. So we get outside and he waited for us and then came over and asked my coworker “are you (name)? Because I thought you were going to try and stay open for me and I’m just so disappointed in you you let me down I’m just really upset you gave me the impression you would wait for me but I guess not that’s so disappointing” we were like sorry whatever we’re open tomorrow and just kept walking.

But seriously, FUCK YOU.

When it hits closing time, WE ARE CLOSED. If we’re just going to allow people in after hours because it’s more convenient for them then we’ll have to do it for everyone and why fucking bother closing. You had the entire day, you have tomorrow, and you have every day because we’re open daily. The most irritating thing about this guy is he tried to make us feel bad because he didn’t get there during the SEVEN HOURS we were open. It sucks if you have a job or whatever, but I have plans and why should I have to stay and wait so that you can just check out our collection? That’s extremely rude and self-important of you.

Another thing for new cashiers to watch out for are the people who ask for cash back. They come when its busy, or if its not busy, they will strike up a convo with you during the transaction.Once you are done,they will then be like,"Oh, you didnt give me cash back" when of course, you already did. In the moment of nervousness or being rushed, you'll believe them. It's happened to me. Clearly tell them "heres your XX.XX", so you can say for sure,"Yes I did" Offer to count the till if you have to.

Thank you!! Yes! Please watch out. These people are doing nothing but trying to get one over on you.

For anyone who wants to bring their gun into a store because “hurhur American freedom” please don’t. As a former cashier at a gas station, aka the type of store that’s commonly shown getting robbed on the news, movies, etc. this was my biggest fear on the job. We had a regular would who walk in with his gun strapped to his waist and I never knew if today was going to be the day that he didn’t like something I said and bam, I’m dead on the ground. Sounds paranoid but I’d rather be paranoid than dead. Please leave your guns elsewhere.

Just thought I would pop in and let you guys know I’m still alive. Ever since I left the gas station life’s been going pretty okay - I’m working two jobs and finishing up an internship this summer and none of it is too bad. Even though I work a lot it’s relatively stress free and there’s just not been anything fun to post about! I’ll try be more active though!
