Cornwall's Random Card of the Day 24/07/2026: Volunteer Militia
Volunteer Militia is a common from Portal: Three Kingdoms.
Well, Alpha had a 2/1 for {W} in Savannah Lions, and I guess here's the inverse: a 1/2 for {W}! It's significantly worse! At least it ain't Squire. Also, I thought ALL militias were voluntary. If not, then it's just an army? If this is not the case, let me know the minutiae.
I give it a Bad Vanilla 1-Drop/10.
Oh hey my other area of expertise.
No a militia is not always voluntary. It's the citizen army. The opposite would be a trained army, career soldiers. Fairly commonly what a fighting force would be made of for a long long time. Because you just didn't have the manpower or economy to keep a "standing army". You might have some units of trained men. Your knights or your bodyguard or your samurai or mercenaries if you're in a situation of constant war. On the inverse you could have brigands. Which is why rebellions could be hard to put down. If you can't feed soldiers, or have enough land for them to go back home to, then you have angry men who are trained in soldiery, but not career soldiers. So usually better than a militia, but not as good as a proper standing army. Like I said, standing armies would come with far stronger economies. That you can afford to have hundreds or thousands of able bodied men to do nothing "productive". And it usually came with more technical advancements. Like giving hundreds of assholes a pointy stick has its uses. But when guns start getting more prevalent and you need a bunch of assholes that can do math. Then you start inventing public schooling...
