@lethaldefect
waaait hyuuga is homophobic??
HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU
ok, I should probably contextualize this a bit before throwing around accusations like that; after all, the whole debacle around Hyuuga’s recent behaviour derives from the way public perception of (male) homosexuality is often generally linked with femininity. While the other end of this spectrum is hypermasculinity, Japanese media is notoriously bad at differentiating between sexual and gender identity. In other words, for many people the concept of being gay, transgender, or just simply a crossdresser are literally one and the same.
Now, enter Mibuchi Reo, a.k.a the shining beacon of everything that is glorious in the world:
Meet Reo. He’s a libra. A second year student. An amazing shooting guard. A guy who has expressed that his favourite type of man is the “stylish” kind. What this means is that Reo is canonically gay. Now, because he is also an effeminate man (even called “Reo-nee” by one of his teammates), some Western fans have argued that Reo is coded trans instead of gay, which I personally find highly unlikely given that in Japanese media, trans markers are often attributed to cis gay men simply because the concepts are so rarely distinguished from one another – the backwards logic being that if you’re a man who likes other men, of course you want to be/dress up as/act like a woman. So, I am going to continue to refer to Reo as one of the rare examples of canon homosexuality in Kurobas.
Now, enter Hyuuga Junpei. During the Rakuzan game, we discover that as a fellow shooting guard, he has admired Reo’s abilities for a long time:
no homo
But wait! Every time someone admires someone, there’s some drama to be had. What would it be this time? Maybe Hyuuga’s discouraged by the fact that Reo is an uncrowned king and he isn’t. Maybe Hyuuga doesn’t like the fact that Reo is playing for Rakuzan, the Big Evil Team. Maybe Hyuuga doesn’t like the fact that Reo has such awesome and luxurious hair.
Maybe––
….oh.
The “effeminate weirdos” Hyuuga refers to are, of course, okama; this is a alur that once again refers to men who express their sexuality/gender in a particularly feminine way. Given that Japanese media (and most media tbh) often struggles to understand the difference between gender identity and gender expression, using a term like this usually implies homosexuality more than any specific gender variant.
And Hyuuga has just told us he hates “those kind of people”.
Let that sink in for a moment.
Of course, you could say “well, Hyuuga never said he hates gay people! He just hates effeminate men!” Sure, this isn’t technically wrong, simply because a layer of arbitrariness always shrouds semantics. However, I would still personally argue that in this specific context, “effeminate weirdo” is a colloquial synonym for gay – what it implies is that you can’t be effeminate without being gay. No other “pretty” character in the series receives this particular treatment/attention, after all; Himuro and Kise (the latter in particular who expresses direct affection even towards his male cohorts) are never ragged on for being “girly”, because they are also not canonically supposed to be perceived as gay.
So, Hyuuga has admired Reo for a long time, and now he gets to play against him. I wonder what happens?
WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW
GREAT JOB HYUUGA
WAY TO TURN INTO A GRADE A ASSHOLE IN 350 MILES PER SECOND
Translation: Reo is one fine ass shooting guard, but he’s an effeminate (gay) man so Hyuuga can’t respect him. Wowowowowowowowow ok.jpg
Now, fair enough, maybe we shouldn’t call Hyuuga a homophobe. Maybe he’s just 17 and stupid. Maybe, instead of blindly slapping on Western labels, we should call him a product of his cultural origin – after all, it’s not Hyuuga’s fault that effeminate men clash with the traditional (Japanese) mindset of everything serving a rightful and predetermined purpose in the world, so men who don’t act like men and women who don’t act like women clearly disrupts this perfect harmony.
Maybe there’s a lot of ways to explain away the fact that he directly express hatred towards men who deviate from gender (and sexuality) roles; maybe we can think of a lot of excuses for the fact that he intentionally refers to Reo by “okama” with derogatory intent (and not just out of ignorance without realizing it’s a slur). Hey, maybe it’s just a heated game, maybe it doesn’t mean anything!
Or maybe he’s just an asshole.
Someone missed team pictures… 🐉💙
Per request I redesigned Tōō Academy next. I am trying my best to fulfill all my KNB promises, I am just mentally ill, I swear. I keep all of you in my heart.
Tōō is a fun team to draw and write for. Their theme is individualism so I didn’t want to coordinate their designs to any particular theme although myths/legends were right there. The Tōō players hate their GOM and it’s fun to imagine their team dynamic after the Winter Cup. As he starts to attend practice again, I imagine Aomine tries to disregard their feelings at first. “Why is everyone so sensitive. I’m here, suck it up.” But Momoi points out that even if Aomine was struggling, he still hurt them and never apologized. He still hurt her. Hearing that he hurt Momoi sobers him up big time and he makes it up to all of them eventually.
Momoi is one of the best characters in KNB. Not only is she a genius, she has Koroko levels kindness and patience ts damn near biblical. The fact that she was so worried for Aomine, she followed him to Tōō is so sweet and sad. I love them together. Do NOT separate. All of Tōō adore her and she’s their best friend. Momoi hypes up Sakurai who tries to give her cooking lessons. Imayoshi respects her as the most important person on the team. Rivera is grateful to her for reaching out and offering him her friendship when he was new to Japan (a loneliness she felt before Aomine found her). And Wakamatsu believes her to be the toughest person he knows for sticking by Aomine for so long despite his assholery.
Speaking of Aomine. I love him. I made him a prematurely graying dragon with freckles because tiger vs dragon is so much cooler than tiger vs panther. I’m sorry but it’s true. Ahem, peep the vision:
Isn’t it so cool! (Kagami vs Aomine if it isn’t obvious and yes Kuroko gave Taiga a sweat band. They are the cutie pie besties.)
Uhhh final thoughts. Imayoshi is also an interesting character to write for. Man’s got a handprint permanently embedded into his skull in light of all the crap he has to reign in. Sakurai’s daily panic attack. Wakamatsu’s complex towards Aomine. Rivera’s daily but hidden panic attack. Luckily, Imayoshi is very good at using manipulation to keep things calm. That said, I like to imagine after a particularly smooth day he finds himself enjoying all their quirks and it hits him that he doesn’t think of it as “putting up with them for his college app” anymore. He adores them. Fuck. After he graduates, I imagine he hesitates to reach out to check up on them. The family he and Hanamiya come from taught them to what to expect from other people. But they all reach out and miss him and I think he feels real for once. I gave him curtain bangs and the anime trope where they close their eyes constantly to allude to his facade.
Ok bye. Love you.

It's crazy that Akashi/Mibuchi is so unpopular in the KnB fandom because it's the only queer ship where it's canon that one likes the other. Maybe it's because those who only watched the anime don't know about it ?
Okay wow, I was meaning to come back to this post since I saw it and now I've submitted my last assignment for the week and I have time so HERE WE GO!
Akashi/Mibuchi, platonically or romantically, is CRIMINALLY underrated and under-discussed and I don't know why. Like you said, it is literally the only queer ship where it is canon that one person likes the other, but there's so much more to their dynamic that I feel like I need to talk about before I explode.
First up, let's talk about the nickname "Sei-chan". There are so many layers to this nickname. In both the manga and the anime, Akashi is portrayed as this final boss character, very godlike and untouchable. So, for someone like Mibuchi to call him something as cute as "Sei-chan" seems insane.
Akashi had a couple nicknames in Teiko like "Akashicchi" and "Aka-chin" (brought to you by Kise and Murasakibara, respectively), but 1) those were nicknames given out to all the miracles + Kuroko and Momoi, so Akashi wasn't a special case. 2) both nicknames used his family name, Akashi. There is still a level of formality that both of them keep by doing that. 3) both of those nicknames were given to Akashi before he switched personalities.
Fast-forward to high school, Akashi has long switched to his other personality which is known to be colder and more tyrannical. And yet, despite all of that, Mibuchi met Akashi for the first time and was basically like "Yeah, that looks like a Sei-chan to me." Mibuchi sped-ran through all the levels of formality and went straight to closeness by using Akashi's given name, Seijuro. Mind you, Midorima, the miracle Akashi has gone on record saying he gets along with the most, calls him "Akashi". Even Momoi, a.k.a. the queen of giving the cutest nicknames to all the miracles, simply addresses Akashi as "Akashi-kun". None of Akashi's friends had ever used his given name until Mibuchi came along. And, honestly, Mibuchi is kind of iconic for that.
And, for someone as high and mighty as Akashi seemed to be, you'd think that he wouldn't stand for such a cutesy nickname. But Akashi has zero problem with it. He is supremely unbothered by the fact that this person who he just met is not only calling him by his given name but tacking on the -chan suffix, something Mibuchi doesn't do for anyone else on the team but Akashi. Say it with me now: SPECIAL 👏🏿 TREATMENT 👏🏿.
Moving past my unnecessarily long rant about Akashi's nickname, if you pay attention during the anime/manga, you'll notice that Mibuchi is the one who accompanies Akashi to most places. For example, Mibuchi and Akashi work out together.
And (even though this is a special episode that is full of 4th wall breaks) Mibuchi accompanied Akashi to Maji Burger in the 3rd KNB fan disc. Keep in mind that both Mibuchi and Akashi go to school in Kyoto, which means Mibuchi braved a 4 or 5-hour round trip just to see Akashi meet up with and chat with his friends from Teiko.
Speaking of that fan disc, the part that barely anyone talks about but is so integral to MibuAka potentially being a ship that has a two-way attraction, this part where they're discussing Valentine's Day chocolates and Mibuchi straight-up asks Akashi if he would accept chocolates if he made them.
And what does Akashi say in response to this???
"Yes, of course. I'm looking forward to it." HELLOOOOOOOOOO
And Akashi is not stupid or oblivious. In the Replace Plus chapters, he tells Nijimura that he already knew about Momoi liking Kuroko, and it's Midorima who is shown to be the oblivious one out of all the miracles.
And you can argue that of course he knew because Momoi was being obvious about it with her behavior, but I would argue that Mibuchi is also not very subtle either. Calling Akashi (and only Akashi) by a pet name, accompanying Akashi to all these places even when he doesn't have to, and on top of that, wanting to make Akashi Valentine's Day chocolates after hearing that Momoi also wanted to make Kuroko Valentine's Day chocolates? Yeahhhhh Mibuchi you're not fooling anyone with that, I'm sawry.
Akashi is incredibly observant and it's a running joke in the anime/manga that he practically reads other people's minds because he seems to always know what other people are thinking. There's just no way he's not aware of the optics of a boy giving another boy homemade chocolates on Valentine's Day. Let's not be silly here! Akashi knows exactly what Mibuchi is doing with that gesture and he's perfectly okay with it and even encourages Mibuchi to do it!
And even if Akashi is somehow not romantically attracted to Mibuchi, it doesn't change the fact that Akashi is still very much Mibuchi's baby. Case in point:
I don't even think I need to explain this photo. Look at how excited Mibuchi is to make sweets for Akashi, although poor Akashi is probably sitting there wondering how on earth he's supposed to eat all of this. (As a side note, I will never get over how adorable Akashi's face is in this photo. His owlish expression is so precious and makes him look like a middle-schooler again. 🥺)
Also in the Zero Step video, remember when Rakuzan went to a photo booth to take pics together? Notice how Mibuchi is the only one actually touching Akashi. If you watch the clip in full, Akashi even leans into Mibuchi a little. Mibuchi deffo has some sort of privileges that the rest of the team doesn't. The only person who ever got close to Akashi like that is Nijimura, but I'll explore the NijiAka dynamic another time.
But yeah, you can see Mibuchi likes going out of his way for Akashi, taking care of him, fussing over him, and worrying about him in general. Like in the KNB drama CD season 3 vol 9 and also in the Replace Plus novels, when Mibuchi thinks that the other two Uncrowned Kings are bothering Akashi too much, he'll scold them for doing so. It's giving "Don't worry your pretty little head over it, I'll handle it".
*looks at notes* okay, I think I've said enough, so I'll just wrap up this post with some final words. I really love the Akashi/Mibuchi dynamic. Even if it ends up being one-sided attraction/infatuation, their interactions with each other are still super wholesome. Honestly, I would have liked to see more of that in the anime/manga because with all the responsibilities Akashi has to shoulder, it's good he can have someone to lean on when it gets too much. Mibuchi kinda functions like Nijimura in that sense (before he made Akashi captain, that is). But at the same time, it's also different. There's this nurturing side of Mibuchi, and Akashi just brings it out of him. And the reason why Akashi doesn't push him away is because, deep down, he needs someone like Mibuchi in his life.
So many people saw Akashi as unapproachable, and yet, Mibuchi didn't care about all that. To him, Sei-chan is Sei-chan and nothing will change that. But yeah, I have said all I can, so imma just leave it there.
it’s not weird to find fanfiction from 2021, or 2017, or 2014 that you’ve never read and actually taking your time to read it.
it’s not weird to love it and comment and leave kudos because the author will probably still see it someday and it will make them happy.
it’s not weird to like said author’s work so much that you want to go look for other fics from them.
it’s not weird to go through the authors profile and look for other fics from the ships you like (or maybe some that you’ll give a chance because you liked the author) and maybe bookmark them for later.
it’s not weird to read these other fics and like them too and comment on them because you actually like them and you want to let the author know.
it’s not weird to read fanfiction from 5, or 8, or 10 years ago and actually enjoy and engage with it because it’s perfectly normal to relate to something that’s less than a decade old!
let’s stop treating fanfiction like they’re instagram posts that stop being interesting in 24 hours! fanfiction is NOT social media, fanfiction is art!!! and art doesn’t get old in one day, one year, or even a decade!
read fanfiction! write fanfiction! comment on fanfiction! let’s not let fanculture die people!!!!!
It’s weird. Way back in the day (like, pre-Voltron Legendary Defender era) the relationship between two unrelated fictional guys being considered “brotherly” would have been quite validating to us slash shippers. It’s like, oh wow, they’re that close, huh. They already consider themselves each other’s family. They’d die for each other. We’d have thought a romantic relationship stemming from that was perfectly logical!
And it’s not like the ship would ever be canon, so having that sort of deep bond was the next best thing. The fanworks would just have to take it from there.
But it’s so different these days. A character says “you’re like a brother to me” and now shipping two unrelated fictional guys is literally incest? Even though this has been a trope in straight romances for forever? Wow, the view has really shifted! Of course, shippers back in the day were much looser regarding canon roles, ages, power dynamics, or hell, even whether or not two characters existed in the same universe in the first place! But this is one argument I’ve just never been a fan of. Like, I used to say my first gf was my sister all the damn time because I didn’t know how else to interpret my feeings for her early on. And the fact that this seems to disproportionately affect m/m ships and f/f ships is telling, too. Also, people’s views of each other can...change? Sure, maybe Character A once saw Character B as his brother, but something is different now, and so he has to go and navigate those feelings. I mean the whole point of fanworks is exploration. For the characters as well as the writer. And just like back in the day, the ships are rarely canonized, which means something is always being changed or expanded. We just didn't have killjoys in our ears telling us we couldn’t ship two unrelated fictional guys because one of them once referred to the other as a brother or whatever. Well, we did, cause homophobes exist, we just didn’t usually hear it from fellow shippers.
VOLTRON - Shiro x Keith
ship doesn't always mean a romantic, lovey-dovey relationship that ends in marriage. Some of us enjoy angst, gore, and toxic relationships that have no right to be healthy and won't lead to a happy ending.
In my day, 'ship' meant any relationship with feelings other than platonic/familial ones. Obsession or pure lust, not just physical but also metaphorical.
Those were beautiful times when woke culture didn't exist and everyone shipped whatever they wanted. People forget that sebaciel fans have been carrying this fandom from the very beginning.
I also don't know why you expect any morality from someone who is LITERALLY A DEMON.
Do you think Sebastian would care if his actions were considered grooming? That it's wrong? He'd laugh at you all. If he wanted to, he'd take Ciel's soul, body, mind, pride, virginity... or whatever Ciel has left. And most of the fandom would enjoy it.
I recommend you finally grow up and come to terms with it, because your crying won't change anything and you're so fucking annoying.
