Lena closed the bedroom door behind her. The second the latch clicked into place, Selina shoved her gently against it, caging her in with a grin that practically screamed trouble. A sheepish smile spread across Lena's face. Selina leaned in with an unmistakable goal in mind, but Lena stopped her by placing a hand against her chest. Selina tilted her head, narrowed her eyes suspiciously, then slowly leaned back, pointing an accusing finger at her.
"You're really serious about that golden girl, huh?" she teased. Lena had never turned down one of her kisses before.
"Well..." Lena rolled her eyes innocently. "Can't blame a girl for having a crush."
"Unbelievable." Selina placed a dramatic hand over her heart. "I disappear for a few months, and somebody's already stolen my bitch." She sighed theatrically before pouting. "You're not even going to give me a welcome-home kiss?" She leaned forward again, her long nails lightly scratching Lena's arm as the movement made her neckline dip ever so slightly.
Lena laughed at her friend's antics. She slid a hand up to cradle the back of Selina's neck. She had always loved Selina's pixie cut. She pressed a brief, sweet kiss against her lips. Nothing more. When they pulled apart, they were both smiling warmly.
"That was our last kiss," Lena declared, absentmindedly tracing a hand along Selina's waist.
"I can live with that," Selina replied, idly playing with Lena's sapphire necklace. "As long as you're loved... and happy with her." She pressed one final kiss to Lena's cheek before finally stepping back.
Lena and Selina had met in Europe when Lena was eighteen.
Catwoman had broken into one of Lena's luxury apartments intending to rob it. Unfortunately for Selina, the place had been packed with every security system Lena could think of. She'd almost escaped—but almost wasn't enough. Lena caught her. Rather than calling the police, however, Lena had been fascinated. Selina's agility, intelligence, and improvisational skills were unlike anything she'd ever seen. So Lena made her an offer. Catwoman could take anything she wanted from the apartment ...on one condition. She had to tell Lena her story. To Lena's surprise, Selina accepted. For the first time in a very long while, she was completely honest with someone.
Several hours and more than a few bottles of wine later, they knew nearly everything about each other. A friendship had been born. Lena let Selina leave with her entire jewelry collection and Selina promised she'd come back. She kept that promise. Over the following months, every time Selina found herself in Europe, she visited Lena. Before long, they had become more than just friends—they were confidantes, partners in crime… and, over the past year, occasional lovers.
"Is this the one that reminds you of her eyes?" Selina asked from Lena's bed, twirling the sapphire necklace around one finger.
"Hey, give it back," Lena laughed. Sometimes she forgot just how sneaky her friend could be.
"So cheesy," Selina teased before tossing it back.
Lena caught it effortlessly and fastened it around her neck once more.
"Did you bring it?"
"Yeah." Selina sighed dramatically, stretched across the bed like a content cat, and pointed toward an armored briefcase resting on the coffee table.
Lena crossed the room and settled onto one of the crimson velvet sofas before pulling the case onto her lap. She unlocked it carefully. Inside rested a reinforced glass tube filled with a bubbling, phosphorescent green liquid: Lazarus Pit water. One of the rarest substances on Earth. Its mysterious properties could heal mortal wounds, restore youth, and even bring the dead back to life.
"Talia wasn't exactly thrilled to see me," Selina grumbled from behind her, "but she was happy enough once she got paid."
"I wouldn't be thrilled either if I had to do business with my ex's ex," Lena snorted.
Lazarus Pit water was one of the key ingredients in the antidote Lena depended on. Only a tiny amount of the glowing liquid went into each vial she injected. Because of the alien nature of her condition, however, even the Lazarus water couldn't cure her completely, it merely slowed the progression. Which meant Lena was doomed to rely on the antidote for the foreseeable future.
Most of the known Lazarus Pits belonged to Talia al Ghul. In exchange for access to their waters, Lena supplied her with cutting-edge technology and specialized weaponry. It was a mutually beneficial arrangement they had maintained for years.
Selina stepped behind Lena, wrapped both arms loosely around her neck, and rested her chin gently atop her head.
"How much time do you have left?" she asked quietly.
Lena stared at the glowing vial for a long moment.
"At least ten years," she answered softly. "At most..." She exhaled. "I don't know." She felt Selina's embrace tighten around her. "Hey." Lena turned her head enough to meet her friend's eyes. "Ten years is plenty of time to find a real cure." She smiled reassuringly. "You're not getting rid of me that easily."
"...Okay," Selina whispered, though her voice lacked conviction.
The truth was… Lena had already made peace with the possibility of dying. Of course she would keep searching for a cure, she would fight until her very last breath. But if death came before then… She would welcome it with open arms. She preferred living fully to mourning the life she might lose. Her friends, however, didn't need to know that.
"All right, enough." Lena snapped the briefcase shut before standing. "Today's a day to celebrate." She smiled over her shoulder. "And I fully intend to enjoy it." With that, she carried the case toward the hidden entrance to her laboratory.
----
Kara downed another whiskey in a single swallow.
After stepping outside for some fresh air, she had retreated to her favorite place at any party: the bar. Even though you couldn't get drunk on Earth., she liked the faint burn it left in her throat with every sip. Anything to dull the pressure crushing her heart.
She turned, leaning back against the polished counter just as Lena descended the grand staircase with Selina, both giggling like schoolgirls.
"Dance with me," Lena whispered to Selina, making Kara roll her eyes.
She could have left the party right then. Instead, she stayed. Apparently, she enjoyed torturing herself. She watched the two women dance for several minutes before finally reaching her limit. She emptied her glass in one gulp and set it down on the bar with enough force that it nearly shattered. She took a step forward. Diana caught her by the arm.
"Hey," the Amazon warned, "don't do anything stupid."
"When have I ever done anything stupid?" Kara shot back with a cheeky grin before slipping free from Diana's grip and making her way toward the dance floor, where Lena was laughing in Selina's arms.
She waited for the perfect moment. During one of the turns, both women extended their arms. Kara stepped neatly between them and caught Lena by the wrist.
"Do you mind if I steal her?" Kara asked, pretending to sound apologetic when she couldn't have cared less what Selina thought.
Selina's emerald eyes sparkled with amusement.
"She's all yours, lioness." She gave Kara a couple of playful pats on the shoulder before disappearing into the crowd.
Kara immediately pulled Lena toward her until their bodies were flush, drawing a soft gasp from the brunette. Her hands settled firmly around Lena's waist. Lena instinctively wrapped her arms around Kara's shoulders.
"Rude," Lena muttered with a slight frown.
"Well..." Kara replied, unable to keep the bitterness from her voice, "you've spent the entire evening surrounded by suitors. I thought this was supposed to be a charity gala, not a competition for your hand."
Lena arched a perfectly sculpted eyebrow.
"Jealous, Moonshine?"
Kara let out a humorless laugh.
She caught Lena's wrist and spun her effortlessly before pulling her back against her chest. They began swaying together with the music, Lena's back pressed against Kara as they moved across the dance floor. Kara buried her face near Lena's hair, breathing in deeply. She found Lena's perfume immediately. But beneath it lingered traces of William's cologne... and Selina's perfume. Their scents clung to Lena's skin, contaminating the fragrance Kara had become hopelessly addicted to.
"And what if I said yes?" Kara murmured against her ear.
Lena stiffened in her arms.
"What if I told you you've been the only thing I've looked at all night?" Kara felt Lena's breathing falter. "What if I admitted I've wanted to break the hands of every person who's dared touch you tonight?" Lena's heartbeat quickened beneath her. "What if I told you I've been wanting to steal you away all evening so I wouldn't have to share you with anyone?" She leaned even closer. "Then what?"
Lena slowly turned to face her. Their noses were only inches apart.
"You don't get to say or act like that after the bullshit you pulled this morning." She stepped away abruptly. "I'm done."
"Lena—"
"Don't."
But Kara followed anyway.
"Lena, wait!" Lena crossed the gardens of Luthor Manor at a brisk pace, her heels clicking sharply against the stone path. "Lena, please!" She didn't slow down. "Lena!"
Finally, she stopped and turned around.
"What?!"
"I..." Kara swallowed hard. "I'm sorry."
Lena scoffed.
"What exactly do you want from me, Kara?" She began walking toward her again, anger simmering beneath every word. "I don't understand you." Kara instinctively took a step back. "One week you're telling me that if I ever need anything, you'll be there for me." Another step. "And the next, you storm into my office, destroy it, and accuse me of orchestrating an attack on innocent civilians." Another. "And now you're acting jealous and possessive as if you have any claim over me." Kara's back hit one of the marble columns lining the garden. Lena stood directly in front of her. "So tell me, why?" Her voice trembled with restrained hurt. "I thought I was just another narcissistic, psychopathic, animal-torturing Luthor in your eyes."
"I'm sorry," Kara whispered, because she couldn't think of anything else to say.
Lena let out a weary sigh and looked away.
"I'm tired, Kara." A tear escaped despite her efforts to stop it. She wiped it away almost immediately. "I'm really fucking tired." Her voice cracked. "And the last thing I need right now is someone toying with my feelings." She turned to leave. "So... just leave me alone."
Kara gently caught her wrist.
"Please don't go."
Lena looked back. Kara took her other hand as well, intertwining their fingers.
"I'm sorry, Lena." She stepped closer until barely any space remained between them. "I know I acted like an asshole this morning. You didn't deserve any of it, and I'm truly sorry." She exhaled shakily. "Look... I'm a complete mess when it comes to relationships, feelings, people." A self-deprecating laugh escaped her. "I've only started opening up to others a few months ago, and honestly..." She shook her head. "I'm terrible at it." She squeezed Lena's hands gently. "I'm not saying that to excuse what I did. I'm just asking for one chance. One chance to make things right."
Lena searched her face.
"Now you're sorry," she whispered. "But for how long, Kara?" Her voice trembled again. "What guarantees do I have that the next time someone accuses me of something… you won't treat me exactly the same way?"
Kara felt her heart twist.
"Lena..." She lifted one of Lena's hands and pressed a gentle kiss to her knuckles. "You matter to me." Her blue eyes never left Lena's. "I know we haven't known each other for very long… but you matter. I want to trust you and I want you to trust me. I'm not playing with you, I never intended to. I just..." She looked down at their joined hands before meeting Lena's gaze again, tears glistening in her own eyes. “I just want you to forgive me. And maybe..." She smiled weakly. "...maybe we can figure out whatever this is between us."
A long silence settled between them. Neither woman spoke. They simply held onto each other's hands. A cool breeze drifted through the gardens, making Lena shivered. Without thinking, Kara shrugged off her blazer and draped it carefully over Lena's shoulders. Lena was the first to look away. She wiped the last traces of tears from her cheeks.
"Ugh." She let out an exasperated laugh. "It's so hard to stay mad at you when you look like a kicked puppy and keep acting so damn charming." She gave Kara a light shove. "Fine." A reluctant smile appeared. "I forgive you."
Kara's entire face lit up. Before Lena could react, Kara swept her into a tight embrace and lifted her clean off the ground, spinning her around.
"Okay! Okay!" Lena laughed, trying—and failing—to suppress her giggles. "Don't get too excited."
Kara carefully set her back down. She didn't let go of her waist. Instead, she rested her forehead against Lena's.
"Can I kiss you?"
Lena didn't answer. She simply closed the remaining distance between them. Their lips met softly. Every ounce of anger, jealousy, hurt, and frustration melted away with that kiss. Lena tasted like champagne. Kara pulled her even closer, deepening the kiss until Lena sighed quietly against her lips. When they finally parted, Lena gently cupped Kara's face.
"Thank you for coming tonight," she whispered.
Kara turned her head and kissed the palm of her hand. Then her eyes caught something. Thin white lines crossed Lena's right wrist. Scars. Lena immediately noticed where Kara was looking and instinctively pulled her arm back.
"I think..." she said quietly, suddenly nervous. "...we should go back inside." She started walking toward the manor. "Lena, wait." Kara gently caught her left wrist this time. More scars matching the ones on the other arm. She knew exactly what those scars meant. Kara slowly lifted her gaze to Lena's face. For a long moment, she said nothing. Then, instead of asking the question burning inside her chest, she released Lena's wrist and offered her an open hand. "My Princess..." She bowed with exaggerated regal elegance, perfectly imitating Wonder Woman's noble mannerisms. "Would you do me the honor of this dance?"
Lena laughed. A real, bright, genuine laugh.
"It would be my pleasure, my lady." She dipped into an elegant curtsy, gathered the skirt of her gown, and placed her hand in Kara's.
Kara rested her hands on Lena's waist. Lena slipped hers over Kara's shoulders. The music from the ballroom floated effortlessly into the gardens. They danced and neither of them cared how long. They never looked away from each other. For those precious minutes, the rest of the world simply ceased to exist. There was only Kara and Lena, dancing beneath the stars, wrapped in the silver glow of the moon.
----
Kendra slipped away from the ballroom carrying two champagne flutes.
Eve spotted her before Kendra noticed her. She was leaning against one of the marble columns on the terrace, absentmindedly twirling the stem of an empty champagne flute while gazing up at the stars. The cool night air was a welcome escape from the noise inside.
"There you are."
Eve looked over just as Kendra approached with a bright smile that somehow seemed incapable of fading. She set one of the champagne flutes on the stone railing before offering the other to Eve.
"I was wondering where my dance partner disappeared to."
Eve accepted the glass with a grateful smile.
"I needed a break." She let out a soft laugh. "There are only so many politicians I can pretend to find interesting."
Kendra chuckled.
"I imagine being Lena's assistant has to be exhausting."
Eve shrugged.
"Not as much as people think." She took a sip of champagne. "It's a lot of work, sure, but there are so many parts of the job that I genuinely enjoy. Lena's a wonderful boss..." She smiled fondly. "...and the salary is fantastic."
That earned another laugh from both of them. A comfortable silence settled between them. Eve found herself watching Kendra out of the corner of her eye.
She really liked her.
Not just because Kendra was funny or charming, though she was both. There was something effortlessly genuine about her. She made Eve laugh without trying, listened without judging, and somehow, in only one evening, had made her feel lighter than Jimmy ever had throughout their entire relationship.
Lena had been right. Painfully, annoyingly right. "You have terrible taste in men." The memory made Eve smile to herself. Maybe it really had been time to try something different.
"I just wanted to say..." Eve gently bumped Kendra's shoulder with her own. "...thank you."
Kendra blinked.
"For what?"
"For making tonight special."
Kendra's ears immediately turned pink.
"...Oh."
Eve couldn't help laughing. It was ridiculously cute.
Kendra looked at her for a long moment before taking a deep breath.
"Would you maybe..." She rubbed the back of her neck. "...like to go out with me sometime?" Eve's eyes widened slightly. Kendra immediately began backpedaling. "I mean—you don't have to." She laughed nervously. "We haven't known each other for very long. And maybe I'm completely misreading—"
"Kendra."
She stopped talking instantly. Eve couldn't stop smiling.
"I'd love to."
"...Really?"
"Really."
Kendra's face lit up so brightly it almost rivaled the lights spilling from the ballroom.
"Oh my God." She let out an embarrassed laugh. "I think my brain just stopped working."
Eve laughed so hard she nearly spilled her champagne.
"So..." Kendra asked hopefully, taking a cautious step closer.
"So..." Eve echoed, matching her movement with one of her own.
"Is next Friday too soon?"
Eve pretended to consider it.
"Hmm..." She tapped a finger thoughtfully against her chin before smiling. "I suppose I can squeeze you into my schedule."
"I feel incredibly honored." Kendra grinned from ear to ear.
"You should." Eve hooked her pinky around Kendra's. "It's a date."
Kendra stared down at their linked fingers before looking back up with the biggest, most hopelessly smitten smile Eve had ever seen.
"...You're really pretty."
Eve laughed.
"That's it? Just pretty?" She tilted her head teasingly.
"I had something much better planned." Kendra squeezed her hand gently. "But I'm trying to play it cool."
"Oh? Really?"
"You know..." Kendra straightened her posture with exaggerated confidence. "They kind of know me for being... nonchalant."
Eve snorted.
"Sure." She rolled her eyes affectionately before leaning just enough for their shoulders to brush.
Maybe Lena's advice had actually worked. Maybe, for the first time in a long time, Eve had found someone who genuinely appreciated her. And judging by the hopeless grin Kendra was trying—and failing—to hide… The feeling was mutual.
----
Selina wandered through the gardens with a bottle of champagne in hand, exploring Luthor Manor and taking one leisurely sip after another. Eventually, she reached the parking area. She strolled between rows of luxury cars until she found one she knew all too well: a black 1963 Chevrolet Corvette, Bruce Wayne's car.
A devilish smile spread across her face. She glanced around. No witnesses, no security and the cameras didn't matter. Gabriel was monitoring them tonight, and the man would never rat her out. Lena certainly wouldn't either.
Perfect.
The lock clicked open beneath the practiced touch of her picks. Three seconds. Bruce was getting sloppy. Selina slipped into the driver's seat, inhaling the familiar scent of expensive leather and cedarwood. Still annoyingly tasteful. She opened the glove compartment, nothing interesting. The center console: receipts, business cards.
God, Bruce, you really knew how to make crime boring.
"Oh?" An antique silver watch went directly into the dress.
A leather money clip. Into the dress. A thick stack of hundred-dollar bills. Also into the dress.
"...Bruce, darling." She clicked her tongue dramatically. "You make this far too easy."
Her fingers wandered farther. A custom-made throwing star.
"...Now that's pretty." She slipped it into the dress.
A titanium multitool. Into her pocket. Two cufflinks. Also into her pocket. She briefly considered stealing the steering wheel purely out of spite.
...Tempting. No. Lena would kill me if I ruined her guests' evening.
With a satisfied grin, she climbed back out and gently closed the door behind her. She hadn't even taken three steps.
"What are you doing?"
Selina froze.
...Well. Shit.
She turned slowly.
Wonder Woman stood a few feet away, her hands clasped calmly behind her back beneath the fluorescent lights of the parking area. She looked perfectly composed, perfectly elegant. Which somehow made her infinitely more intimidating.
Selina flashed her brightest, most innocent smile.
"Diana." she beamed.
"Selina."
"I was just admiring Bruce's excellent taste in automobiles." Selina ran her hand over the car.
"You were inside his car." One elegant eyebrow rose.
Gods, Selina hated when Diana did that. Not because it scared her, quite the opposite. It was unfair how attractive she looked whenever she silently judged her. Diana stepped closer until only an arm's length separated them. Without saying another word, she extended one hand.
"Give them back."
"I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about." Selina placed a hand dramatically over her heart.
Another raised eyebrow.
"..."
"..."
"...Fine." She rolled her eyes with theatrical annoyance. "You really know how to ruin a girl's evening."
She reached into the side of her dress. First came the money clip. She dropped it into Diana's waiting hand. Then the stack of cash, the antique watch, the titanium multitool, the cufflinks. Finally, the throwing star.
"There." She dusted off her hands. "Happy?"
Diana looked down at the collection of stolen items, then back at Selina. She didn't move.
Selina frowned.
"What?" Silence. "...What?!"
Diana said nothing, just looked at her with that infuriatingly patient stare.
Selina groaned.
"Oh, come on." The corners of Diana's lips twitched ever so slightly. "You are impossible." The Amazon remained silent. "Oh, for the love of—" Muttering under her breath, Selina reached into the neckline of her dress and fished out a small vintage silver Zippo lighter. "...That's everything." She slapped it into Diana's palm. "You really hate fun."
A tiny smile tugged at Diana's lips.
"I dislike theft."
"Liar."
That earned her the tiniest chuckle. Victory.
Diana walked over to Bruce's Corvette, unlocked it with the spare key Bruce had entrusted to her earlier that evening, and carefully returned every stolen item exactly where it belonged. Even the lighter. Traitor.
Selina leaned against a nearby stone wall, folding her arms.
"...You're no fun."
"So you've mentioned." Diana closed the car door and turned back toward her.
For a moment, neither of them spoke. Music drifted faintly from the manor: violins, laughter, champagne glasses clinking somewhere in the distance. Diana walked toward her, closer. Until Selina caught the familiar scent of jasmine and fresh rain that always seemed to cling to the Amazon.
"The night's still young."
"Oh?" Selina tilted her head, unable to stop smiling. "Tell me more."
Diana's voice dropped just enough to make Selina's pulse quicken.
"If you're finished stealing from my friends..." Those blue eyes never left hers. "...perhaps you'd like to end the evening somewhere else."
Selina blinked once, then twice.
"...Are you asking me on a date, Wondy?"
"I'm making a suggestion."
"Mmm." Selina smiled. She stepped forward at an agonizingly slow pace until only inches separated them. "You know..." She absentmindedly smoothed an imaginary crease from Diana's gown. "...I was kind of hoping you'd chase me across the rooftops."
"I thought I'd try asking politely first."
Selina laughed.
"I've missed you." Diana's smile softened.
The words were so quiet, so sincere, that they caught Selina completely off guard. Her teasing smile slipped just for a heartbeat.
"...Yeah." She looked away for a second before meeting Diana's eyes again. "I missed you too."
Silence settled between them. Comfortable, dangerously comfortable. Selina sighed theatrically.
"Fine." She slipped her arm through Diana's. "You win."
"I wasn't aware we were competing."
Selina grinned, slowly dragging the tips of her long nails across Diana's bicep simply because she knew exactly what it did to her.
"We always are."
----
The gardens had grown quieter.
Most of the music from the ballroom reached them only as a distant melody carried by the warm summer breeze. Lanterns hidden among the hedges bathed the winding stone paths in soft golden light, while the moon painted silver across the fountains and flowerbeds.
Neither of them spoke, there was no need.
Their fingers remained intertwined as they wandered aimlessly through the gardens, their shoulders brushing every few steps. Lena could still feel the lingering warmth of Kara's hand wrapped around her waist. Her heart hadn't stopped racing since they had danced beneath the stars.
Who would've told the woman I was just a few months ago that I'd be walking hand in hand through my own gardens with Supergirl? she thought, unable to suppress the smile tugging at her lips.
It felt absurd and ridiculous, like something torn from the pages of a fairy tale. And yet… here Kara was, real, warm.
Kara stole another glance at Lena. Then did a double take, triple take.
"...What?" Lena asked without looking at her, a knowing smile tugging at the corner of her lips.
"Nothing."
"Mhm." Kara immediately looked away. "You've been staring at me for the last five minutes." Only then did Lena stop walking and turn to face her.
"So?"
Kara rubbed the back of her neck.
"It's just..." A shy smile spread across her face. "You look gorgeous."
Lena blinked. Heat immediately bloomed across her cheeks before she managed to compose herself.
"You look hot."
Kara nearly tripped over absolutely nothing.
"W-What?"
"They should ban you from wearing suits." Lena gestured vaguely from Kara's head to her polished shoes. "'Cause of the damage you cause."
Kara stared at her for a heartbeat. Then they both dissolved into laughter.
"Oh my God." Kara covered her face with one hand. "That was a terrible pick up line." She narrowed her eyes playfully. "You rehearsed that one, didn't you?"
"Maybe."
"You absolutely did."
"I was actually going to say something much more vulgar..." Lena murmured, reaching up to absentmindedly straighten Kara's tie. "...but I don’t wanna cause a scandal."
Kara laughed even harder. Still smiling, they resumed walking until they reached a marble bench overlooking one of the fountains. Moonlight shimmered across the rippling water. Kara's smile gradually faded.
"...Lena." Something in her voice made Lena's chest tighten.
"What is it?"
Kara stared at their joined hands.
"I..." She swallowed. "There's something I have to tell you."
Lena searched her face for a moment before gently guiding her toward the bench. They sat side by side, their knees brushed.
Kara inhaled slowly.
"When we first met..." Another pause. "I was assigned to investigate you." Lena stayed silent. She'd expected this conversation eventually. "My mission..." Kara whispered, unable to meet her eyes. "...was to spy on you."
Silence settled between them. Lena could practically hear Kara preparing herself for the worst. Anger, disappointment, rejection. Instead… Lena laughed, not loudly. Just a quiet, amused laugh. The sound made Kara blink in confusion.
"Why… are you laughing?"
Lena covered her mouth, failing miserably to hide another chuckle.
"Oh, baby..." She shook her head. "I already knew."
Kara's expression froze.
"How?!"
Lena smiled.
"You know..." She reached over to tuck one of Kara's loose curls behind her ear. "You're an amazing superhero." A tiny smile appeared on Kara's face. "But you really suck as a spy."
"Hey!"
"I have security cameras outside LuthorCorp." Kara visibly stiffened. "They caught you." Lena couldn't stop smiling. "And standing on top of buildings wearing a bright blue-and-red suit doesn't exactly help you blend into the scenery."
Kara buried her face in both hands.
"Oh my God..." Her voice came out muffled. "I thought I was being subtle."
Lena laughed so hard her shoulders shook.
"No, sweetheart." She gently patted Kara's knee. "You really weren't."
"I'm never going to recover from this."
"Oh, you'll survive."
The laughter slowly faded, leaving behind another comfortable silence. Eventually Kara lowered her hands.
"So..." She looked at Lena again. "You knew every time I was watching you?"
Lena shook her head.
"No." She looked toward the fountain, watching the water dance beneath the moonlight. "I simply assumed you might be there."
"And that didn't bother you?"
She considered the question carefully.
"Hmm… No." Her thumb absentmindedly brushed over the back of Kara's hand. "I understood why you'd been asked to do it." She smiled to herself. "And..." She turned back toward Kara. "It actually made me feel safe."
Kara frowned.
"...Safe?"
Lena nodded.
"I figured that if Supergirl was secretly watching over me..." She reached up and gently cupped Kara's face with both hands. "...then nothing truly terrible could happen." She leaned in just enough to leave a soft kiss at the corner of Kara's mouth.
When she pulled back, Kara was staring at her with an expression so tender it made Lena's heart ache. Their fingers naturally found each other again. For a long while, they simply listened. To the fountain, the crickets, the distant music drifting from the manor.
Eventually, Lena broke the silence.
"For how long?"
Kara grimaced.
"Until the Daily Planet incident."
Lena looked at her curiously.
"After that..."
Kara rubbed the back of her neck.
"Clark removed me from the assignment."
"Why?"
"He said I wasn't being professional anymore." Kara laughed weakly.
Lena smiled knowingly.
"I think what happened today proved he was right." Kara admitted it so quietly Lena almost missed it. She looked down at their intertwined fingers. "I probably shouldn't keep kissing my surveillance targets."
Lena's smile softened.
"Thank you for telling me."
Without thinking, she rested her head against Kara's shoulder. It felt good being with her.
"You still owe me those windows."
Kara laughed quietly.
"I'll pay for them."
"No." Lena wrapped both arms around Kara's. "I think I'd rather keep you as payment."
Kara's laughter vibrated through her shoulder, making Lena smile against the fabric of her suit. Another peaceful silence settled between them. The party was still alive somewhere behind them. Soon they would have to return.
Kara spoke first.
"Can we promise each other something?"
Lena looked up.
"Anything."
"Let's be honest with each other." Kara's voice was barely above a whisper. "I don't want there to be any more misunderstandings between us."
Lena's heartbeat stumbled. Honest. God. How badly she wanted that. She wanted Kara to know her, the real her. Every scar, every fear, every impossible secret she carried. But there were truths she still wasn't ready to reveal. Truths that might make Kara walk away. Truths that terrified even Lena.
Slowly, she lifted her head and met those impossibly blue eyes.
"I promise." The words came out steady and certain.
Because no matter how frightening it might become… If Kara asked for honesty, Lena would spend every day trying to become brave enough to give it to her.
