The audience was huge! You were almost certain there were well over five hundred people there. Your breathing was slightly irregular—not fast, as if you were having a panic attack, just irregular enough for someone who was about to see the love of their life perform in one of the most dramatic and beautiful plays in the world.
Your hands clutched the small playbill as if they were holding gold. Your eyes scanned the room once more, and even if it were just you there that night, part of your brain was still trying to spot someone you knew in the crowd.
The storm of thoughts was cut off when your phone vibrated in your pocket. Taking one last look at the stage, your hands fumbled for the phone in your pants pocket. The screen lit up softly—the brightness low so nothing would disrupt your experience—and your eyes immediately noticed the name on the display.
Lizie
The play is about to start. I’ll call you later?!
Not telling your girlfriend of five years that you were in the audience for her play was torture, especially since you hated lying to Sadie. However, the urge to surprise her after a few months of not being able to see each other was too strong.
With your girlfriend busy wrapping up “Stranger Things,” two successful plays, and the filming and premiere of “Spider-Man,” you two were barely seeing each other at this point. Even so, things never seemed to change between the two of you. And that wasn’t just a reason for your heart to warm—it was reason enough for the redhead to love you more than anything.
Having someone who understood what her job demanded and someone as understanding as you were was like a godsend for Sadie. She always told her friends how much you supported her; she even went above and beyond, naming you as her main source of support in casual interviews and public conversations.
You
Break a leg! I love you, you’re amazing, Liz <3
When the play began, your heart raced. You didn’t want her to see you in the audience—at least not yet. You tried to stay as quiet as possible, hiding almost like a pro while silently getting emotional over your girlfriend’s performance.
When you saw the actors taking their bows, you were in tears, too overwhelmed to even stand up. You waited five minutes, sitting in the same seat as you watched the audience begin to file out in an orderly fashion.
“Miss?” The man’s voice caught your attention immediately.
Your eyes shifted to one of the theater staff members—the one you’d spoken to earlier. For established actors, the description was one of the best things imaginable, and you were grateful for that man’s help more than anything. Otherwise, Sadie would have figured out your disguise in less than five seconds.
You followed him backstage. Your legs were still too shaky from the powerful emotions that art could evoke in those who let it into their hearts. When the man stopped in front of a closed door, you took a deep breath; the small bouquet of flowers you’d brought was still intact, and you took pride in that.
“This is her dressing room. She stays here for a few minutes after changing to recover from it all. She usually comes out to talk to her fans afterward, but it’s not really mandatory.” You nodded. “Make yourself at home, miss.”
“Thank you,” you murmured with a smile, taking a deep breath for the fiftieth time as the man walked away, leaving you on your own again.
Letting out a loud sigh, you raised your hand, and your fingertips tapped the wood in a familiar way. You heard a muffled sound before a soft “Come in” reached your ears. Your hand firmly grasped the doorknob, knowing that the love of your life was on the other side of that door.
You peeked through the crack in the door before stepping fully inside. Sadie was standing in front of the lit vanity, a tissue dabbing at the tears she’d shed earlier.
She had already changed; she was wearing light-wash jeans and a loose-fitting band T-shirt that you were sure she’d stolen from your side of the closet—even though that division had ceased to exist about three years ago.
“How do you manage to look so beautiful even when you’re crying?”
The words, thrown into the air, hit Sadie like a cannonball. She spun around so fast you could have sworn she’d strain her neck. The tears almost came back instantly when she saw you standing there, bouquet in hand and looking slightly nervous.
Her feet moved faster than you could count, and the next second she had thrown herself into your arms. Her arms wrapped around your neck while yours wrapped around her waist, and even though the impact was strong, Sadie always had a way of making everything seem gentle.
Her face was buried in your chest, and her shoulders were trembling slightly. For a second, you thought she was crying again, but that changed when you heard the soft sound of her hoarse laughter through the fabric of your sweater.
“I can’t believe you’re here!” Her voice was soft, contrasting with the firm way she clutched your clothes.
“I’ve been missing you so much.” The smile on your face widened when your girlfriend stopped hiding her face and looked directly at you.
Her eyes were teary again, her cheeks were red, and she was sniffling slightly. The most beautiful woman in the world!
Her hands reached for your face; her thumbs traced your cheeks, as if she were truly trying to confirm that you were really there. And then, in the next second, her lips were on yours.
The salty tears from before made the kiss taste even more poignant. Your back was slightly arched so you’d be about the same height as your girlfriend, and the redhead met you while standing on her tiptoes.
Her lips made you lose yourself every single time. Your hands slid from her waist down to her thighs, lifting her up and making her wrap her legs around your waist effortlessly. The world seemed empty at that moment—just you and the woman of your life in a moment that was more than special.
When the lack of breath finally became an issue, the two of you pulled apart, unable to hold back the smiles on your faces. Your lips seemed reluctant to part, exchanging a few more quick kisses amid passionate laughter that made your hearts race and your legs tremble with every passing second.
“It was spectacular watching you, my love!” Your whispered words made the woman in your arms laugh a little more.
“Thank you for being here.” Her hands caressed the back of your neck, and she could feel the goosebumps running up your spine.
“I’d watch you for the rest of my life if I could!” She laughed. You smiled at her joy.
When things finally calmed down, you and Sadie walked out of the dressing room hand in hand. You greeted a few people who had worked behind the scenes on the play and even gave Noah a hug before your girlfriend led you to the exit.
Her hand didn’t let go of yours for even a second.
“Do you mind if I go talk to the fans before we leave?” It wasn’t a genuine question; Sadie knew you’d never say no to something like that.
“You know I don’t.” You lifted the hand that was intertwined with hers, kissing the back of her hand before letting go. “I’ll wait here, okay?!” She nodded, smiling at you as you leaned in to plant a kiss on her forehead.
When Sadie stepped out to interact with the crowd and sign a few things, you stood there, taking in the success and the solid foundation your girlfriend had built through her art. Something in your chest made you feel an overwhelming sense of pride, almost as if you couldn’t contain it. You were incredibly proud of everything she’d achieved on her own, and you admired the woman she’d become with all your heart and soul.
The smile on your face was huge, and noticeable to anyone who saw you now. With your hands tucked into your pockets, you admired her. That spirited and cheerful nature—even if introverted in her own way—was like second nature to you. You always joked that if Sadie were a fruit, she’d be a strawberry.
It made you laugh to yourself.
“Sorry, I don’t think this is working.” Your eyebrows furrowed slightly when you heard her voice.
She was near the end of the line, shaking the pen she was using as if the ink were refusing to sign more things than she actually wanted to.
You barely had time to react when Sadie’s gaze turned to you; the security guards there didn’t seem to have what she needed, and even though almost everyone there had brought a pen, you were always the first person she’d turn to when anything didn’t go as planned—even when that “anything” was as minor as the pen running out of ink.
Your girlfriend’s agent—who was on the phone—quickly turned to you, pulled a pen out of her purse, and handed it to you.
“Here, give this to her.” And then continued the call as if nothing had happened, as if they hadn’t just sent you on a dangerous mission.
You smiled anyway. Letting the audience see you clearly, ready to hear the gasps and excited whispers at your name and at the sight of you and Sadie together after months without any explicitly public interactions.
“Here, Lizie!” The name slipped out of your mouth in a familiar way—too familiar to be a joke or just a nickname.
No. That was intimate! You were calling her by her middle name.
A chorus of “Aww” was heard by you and the redhead—who, at this point, was just trying to hide the smile on her face at seeing you again.
When the commotion died down and the people had left, Sadie was still in your arms; you’d been apart too long to let her go. The car was silent, filled only by the music playing softly as Sadie connected her phone to the aux input.
Her hand held yours over the car’s manual gearshift, not letting go even when you needed to shift gears. She was always saying you should get a car that pollutes the environment less.
When you finally arrived at her apartment, everything felt familiar. The smell of home washed over you in the best possible way, and you flopped onto the couch without a second thought.
“Man, it’s good to be home…!” Your voice was slightly cut off when a smaller body threw itself onto your chest, lying on top of you.
“I can say the same.” She looked at you with that mischievous smile you love. “My home is back.”
You rolled your eyes, trying to keep from blushing at the redhead’s words. Everything about her left you completely defenseless; all your walls came crashing down when you were with her.
“Are you blushing?” She laughed, and you tried to cover it up.
“Yes, you are! Your cheeks are red!”
“It’s just the reflection of your hair!”
