Pride Parade Awareness in celebration of 34 years

IIE Rosebank College Braamfointein Campus together with the Student Wellness Department presented and raised awareness with Pride Parade around the streets of Braamfointein. The parade was to celebrate the 34th year since the first pride march.

October is dedicated to educating people about the history of LGBTQIA+ rights, major events, and prominent persons that inspired the cause. Pride marches take place throughout the month to commemorate past struggles and accomplishments, reminding people of the ongoing fight for equality. The aim of the parade was to bring forth unity, support and awareness to the LGBTQIA+ communities. There are many members with different letters within the community who still suffer the consequences of choice and reality. Students gathered and helped to bring forth advocacy and support from the community of Braamfontein.

The parade had a great influence regarding acceptance and challenge societal norms that marginalize LGBTQ+ individuals, helping to foster a more inclusive culture. It also encouraged people to embrace their identities openly and advocate for a society where everyone can live authentically without fear.

The pride parade served as a forum for raising awareness of continuing issues confronting LGBTQIA+ communities, such as discrimination, hate crimes, and mental health concerns, a strong emphasis on the history of these issues, which connects the past to the present.

The parade helped to broaden the understanding of the community's history and the importance of support from non-LGBTQIA+ individuals in advancing equality.

The highlight of early literature development

IIE Rosebank College Braamfontein Campus was honored to form a collaboration as the student Representative Council alongside with the Student Wellness Department to visit a creche called Mathabeleng in Thembisa just to engage and play with the kids.

The main aim for the visit was for broader the kids knowledge and spend time with them. Since many families don't have a lot of books, their children don't get the early exposure to language and print materials that is essential for the development of reading and writing skills. Books, sweets and games were brought along to the creche for them to have a great day filled with interactions, education and comprehension.

The purpose of the crèche visit was to highlight and advocate for the importance of early Literacy development, bridging education gaps, language development and holistic development.

Supporting crèches in South Africa is crucial to tackle illiteracy and academic underperformance, promoting early childhood education for future success and reducing inequality.

Festive Safety Activation Campaign

IIE Rosebank College Braamfontein was honored to be graced with the presences from the SAPS alongside the HAWKS today at the Glass Area. The pillars that were most focused on are human trafficking and drug abuse.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) launches a thorough awareness campaign in conjunction with internal and external stakeholders, including the SOCI's Economic Protected Resources and the Cyber Crime Section of the Priority Crime Special Investigations (PCSI), Varsity College, and Rosebank College, in honor of Human Trafficking Awareness Week.

The aim for the event was for eye-opener purposes, it is known that students are most vulnerable simply because they are away from home and often misuse their freedom. Emphasis was given in regards to drug trafficking, sex trafficking and online dating scams that are prevalent issues affecting students, posing threats such as exploitation, slavery, grooming, kidnapping and cyberbullying.

Three boards were brought forward which had samples of different drugs to educate the students and many students were interested to know about different kinds of drugs and their harm. The event educated the students on recognizing signs of human trafficking and exploitation, avoiding online scams and grooming, reporting suspicious activities and seeking help and building resilience and awareness within communities.

The key message was to be aware of the surroundings an online interactions, verification of information and sources before engaging, reporting suspicious activities to authorities and supporting and looking out for one another.

Advocating and raising awareness on children's literature

IIE Rosebank College Braamfontein Campus advocated for the importance of literature on the 02 October 2024 at P1 Glass Area.

The study reveals that in all 11 of the official languages of South Africa, 81% of children could not read for comprehension. The aim for this festival was to bring forth awareness on children's literature and story books. The mission for the festival was to showcase the benefits and the importance of early reading so that kids can get used to literature at an early age.

Bearing in mind that kids do learn formulas and methods at an early age, it is important to advocate for literature.

Networking through the entertainment industry

IIE Rosebank College Braamfontein Campus held a Social awareness and education which presented the multimedia expo. The event occurred on the 18th September 2024 from 10:00 - 14:00 at P1 Glass Area.

The main aim for the event was for networking experience with stakeholders from the entertainment industry and an opportunity to learn more about the industry.

The event enabled students to showcase their talents and gifts by giving them the opportunity and spotlight to serve what they know best. They also got a lot of exposure and the opportunity to network and gain knowledge about the entertainment industry.

The importance of self awareness

One thing this week has taught me is how we expect people to act well, do right by us, keep their promises, make us happy and avail themselves but we don't. It starts with you *making yourself happy*, showing up for yourself, availing yourself , stepping in for you, acting well, doing right by yourself.

As much as we say, "if he wanted to, he would" that should also apply to us individually because you know you want that bag but you don't want to buy it and compromise and sacrifice some things to have it and make yourself happy. IF YOU WANTED TO FOR YOURSLEF, YOU WOULD TOO. People have a lot going in their lives already to always do right by you, to always step in and make you happy.

The comfort of living a well-informed life

IIE Rosebank College Braamfontein held a holistic event that promoted physical, mental and emotional well-being in various activities and resources on the 17th September 2024.

The key stakeholders of the event was Virgin Active, Optical Warehouse, Optometrist, a Dietician and Anova. All of the stakeholders mentioned below provided students with practical tools, knowledge to develop healthy habits and ways to manage stress effectively.

Virgin Active provided some activities such as aerobics and exercise lessons for students. Anova conducted HIV testing, informed students about self-care practices and condoms were out for collection to students in need and of use. Students were offered free eye examination for further vision support by an Optometrist. A dietician conducted BMI assessments and shared on tips on healthy eating methods. A lot of emphasize was given by the dietician in term of the cruciality to main proper nutrition while exercising as limiting food intake can negativity affect muscle health and lead to being underweight

The power of giving back to the community

IIE Rosebank College Braamfontein Campus had the opportunity to give back to the community around it's area on the 16th September 2024. Holy Trinity Catholic Church happened to be the lucky location for the school to advocate and extend grace at. The main aim and vision of the project was to help the needy and advocate for change within the community.

The first step right into change is to start within and in depth of your own community and that’s what the students alongside RC team did. The whole project was for bursary recipients and giving back to the community. It taught students and community members good citizenships and the benefits of giving to those in need.

The students cleaned the church, cooked and took care of the homeless. The project showcased the power of extending grace to yourself and to others. The success has touched the hearts of Rosebank College which led to to the project ongoing.

The impact of being health aware

IIE Rosebank College Braamfontein Campus was honored to be graced with the presence of the team from WITS RHI

The event took place on the 16th to 18th September 2024 from 10 am to 4 pm right at P1 Glass Area. The event covered HIV testing, Oral prep, Contraceptives, STI screening and blood results review if previously tested. Condoms were also available for collection and there was education provided for male and female condoms.

Students showed up to the event in numbers which resulted to the success of reaching a huge milestone. Students took account into knowing their status, practicing safe sex and preventing pregnancies and diseases. The nurses and everyone who assisted was so kind, patient and helpful to all students. There were four to more mobile units which also resulted in saving time for students who might have had classes on that day. The event was student friendly and conducive. The nurses and workers from different campaigns/organizations had flyers in order for students to have more knowledge and understanding of the aims and mission they have within the health segment

Looking at our top one socio economic factor which is Teenage pregnancy, the event tried by all means possible to decrease the percentage by enabling and welcoming students to safer methods of significant use. It also brang so much awareness to the misconceptions and stigma's that fly around within the health organizations.

Donation Drive Promotion     

 Miss Fazlin Isaacs (22), is an IIE Rosebank College Braamfontein Student. She is studying second year Bachelor in Education Intermerdiate Phase and has fostered herself into donating consistently to change the lives of those in need. She was born and bred at Gauteng but resides in Delarey. Fazlin is a reserved, introverted individual, softhearted and has the power of kindness.

Fazlin heard about the donation on the day Mr Khumalo was doing a class visit and for her that’s where the idea of donating to the school grew. “The opportunity to have a bursary in hand gave me the gratitude to extend my grace to others and give to the needy” said Fazlin. She grew up in a Muslim family and community which has many less privileged people and the zeal to donate came from there. The first items that she donated where maize meal, pasta, rice, samp, salt, tin food and many other items, she believes that even small items can make a difference in someone’s life. Her biggest drive in terms of consistently donating is witnessing people struggling which has a way to grow compassion, sympathy and motivation.

Her family contributed a lot in terms of the sense of giving that lives within her. Fazlin said, “I once spotted a family of two begging for food and decided to call my mom for help, she told me to come home with them so that we can give them some food to eat.” Mandela day is also an occasion that awakens her sense of giving around her community and instills her to the changes and impact that giving could do in people’s lives. She is raised in a household where her needs are met and that makes her consider other people who are struggling to meet theirs. Fazlin believes donation is a way of giving back to the community to serve a certain difference and purpose. “The smallest contribution can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life” said Fazlin. She also encourages students to donate items because donating is a powerful way to make a difference in someone’s life in every small or big contribution.

Fazlin also took note that not most students don’t have knowledge or exposure to donating and that gave her the opportunity to think of ways to make more students aware about the donation. Fazlin said, “I think the best way to make more students aware is to send emails to students, interact with class representatives to notify classmates, get students to promote the donation drive by running a campaign around campus and last put posters/flyers or speaks on donation.”
