White Diamond is the logical endpoint of gem behavior

When you describe what gems are on Steven Universe, they seem utterly alien. The “body” of a gem isn’t a real object. It’s a hard-light projection emitted from the magical gemstone, which is the true core of their being.

Naturally, this raises a few questions:

Why do they move like they have bones, joints, and muscular systems?

Why does Pearl sigh or hyperventilate to relieve stress? Gems don’t breath.

Why do gems cry? Why do they have emotions at all when they are artificially created for specific purposes?

And then along comes White Diamond with the same answer to all those questions:

“You’re right. That’s stupid. Let’s not do that.”

White Diamond is everything gems should be on paper. She’s unemotional, unmoving, static. Most of her body is drawn as a background element, and her Pearl mimics this lack of movement by sliding across the floor instead of walking. She actually emits light, to the point where her gemstone is barely visible (the only time you can see even an outline of it is during the extreme closeup on her face)

I’ve been seeing a lot of speculation that the White Diamond we saw isn’t “real.” That White Diamond’s gemstone is somewhere else, and what we saw was just a projection from a remote location. Or maybe it was a recording, and that’s why she talked over Steven whenever he tried to speak, and I think all of that speculation is entirely missing the point of White Diamond’s introduction:

She really is that weird.

She really is that alien.

White Diamond is so unlike other living things that even Blue and Yellow Diamond are nervous around her. There is no “real” White Diamond hiding behind a curtain somewhere. What you see is what you get, and what you get is an unnerving, unfathomable alien entity. Older than we can comprehend. More powerful than we dare to imagine. And entirely determined to keep things as they are.

GUYS HOLY SHIT

Okay so I’ve seen the theory floating around about how Steven’s shield is reflective thus Rose’s shield is also reflective

And White Diamond being the leader she is, shields Yellow and Blue. Causing her to lose her eyesight from the blast. (Makes sense why we haven’t seen her around nor mentioned)

That’s why her pupils are white and not black. I doubt this is “because she is White Diamond” because Blue and Yellow do indeed have eyes of their own colors, but the actual pupil itself is indeed black as shown below:

And as I was pondering about this, I wondered “Hey! Can’t Steven heal gems and people? Maybe season six will have Steven somehow healing White’s eyesight.

Then it finally hit me.

That wouldn’t be the first time Steven magically fixed someone’s eyesight now has it ?

This healing could be the key to getting White to believe he is truly is Pink’s reincarnation and getting her on our side.

My Thoughts

I wanted to briefly discuss the new song because I haven’t really seen anyone talk about it and it was just…ugh.

“Mom was a Diamond who invaded Earth,

Saw its beauty and its worth.

Mom made an army and she fought herself

Did that even end up mattering when she faked her own shattering?

Mom lived in hiding by the name of Rose

With the friends she’d made and the form she chose

Now all that’s left of her exists in me”

So obviously the dramatic layout was supposed to be a somewhat comedic setup to ease the tension of the situation. This doesn’t really make sense to me; Steven deserved to have a moment where he could reflect on everything he’s been told and has peiced together, but then again I wasn’t even expecting this much.

This appears to be the format of the song, a gem is pondering over some of the heavy subjects regarding what we’ve learned so far and Steven convinces them to ignore it completely interested of giving them time to heal which is unsettling to say in the least.

So we have the interlude of dialogue between Ruby and Sapphire preparing for the wedding, which is honestly quite cute even if it’s a little out of place, and then there’s a part with Pearl.

“We could think about lies that we told in the past

Pearl: They took it so hard

We could think about hurt feelings and how long they can last

Pearl: How can we move on?

Or we could think about hope

Pearl: Hope?

You know I’ve been hoping

Pearl: About what?

That everything’s better now everything’s out in the open!”

You hear that? If we admit the truth, there will be no concequences for our actions and everyone will be fine with what happened!

This is written by adults who are old enough to have basic critical thinking skills and shouldn’t really be churning this “let’s all love eachother and everything will be fine” message.

I mean, Steven didn’t even seem hurt about the reveal that his mother was a slave-owning, human-kidnapping, planet-colonizing dictator so why would other children question it?

(Amethyst’s part is so short it’s honestly not even worth mentioning, I’m just glad she had a whole episode to talk it through with Steven.)

Peridot: What if Lapis was right? Sooner or later the Diamonds are going to come for the Cluster. We’re all gonna die here!

“We could think about war

We could think about fighting

We could think about long-lost friends we wish we were inviting

We could think about the broken gems in the Cluster at the planet’s core

Or we could think about the bubble we made

So that they can’t be hurt anymore”

This annoyed me for multiple reasons, the first being Peridot is absolutely right about being worried since her friend emotionally manipulated her for months and then literally stole her home under the guise of being ‘scared about the diamonds.’ Peridot’s last encounter with her own Diamond was disobeying a direct order and yelling an insult in her face, Yellow Diamond may not have remembered which is total bs because how many gems rebel against her every day? there’s only a handful left of course she’d remember the peridot she personally sent on a mission but obviously that’s a big thing for her.

Not only that but the Diamond’s do end up coming for the Cluster by the end of the episode, and she tried to warn him.

Additionally, Steven acts as if bubbling gem shards that were forced together and bubbling corrupted gems is a permanent solution. Just keep them out the way, don’t try to find a cure or anything. That would be too hard.

I’m calling it now. Their way of healing the corrupted gems and unfusing the Cluster shards is going to be Blue Diamond crying on them or some shit while holding Yellow Diamond’s hand sobbing “I didn’t…mean to hurt them…I just…I missed Pink so much!!!!!!”

Smoky Quartz - this was a 3rd pass on Smoky’s design, incorporating ideas from Danny, Paul, Raven, Lauren, Hilary, and Kat, (I had also worked with Lamar and Katie on some earlier concepts) Raven suggested small hands for Smoky, which I got really excited about. I tend to give everyone huge hands, or long hands, so I love tiny hands on Smoky!
