Let's talk about The Newsroom- What Kind of Day Has it Been
I wanted to write something last night. I had so much to say, but I was such a mess of tears. I couldn't write anything last night.
Will McAvoy has been through quite a bit in, not only this last season, but the entire series. He's been through a lot in his entire life, actually. He deserves to be happy. He deserves to be a father. And, by god, he's going to be.
Mac was so happy just to tell him the news and Will was so happy to hear it. He went right into protective mode and tried to put her in a hospital bed at just seven weeks. It's no question they're going to make great parents. They already kind of are great parents to the rest of the newsroom. It'll be no different when it's their own, you know, biological kid.
Will was happy, yes, but he was also very sad. His best friend died while he was being released from prison. He kept listening to the events that led up to Charlie's death all while making it from the funeral to the reception. He was going through a lot last night. He was supposed to give the eulogy and ended up having Charlie's brother do it. He was going to say a few words at the cemetery, but he didn't. He finally had a moment with two of Charlie's grandsons that ended up being kind of great, albeit especially cheesy. It's not everyday the News Night crew breaks out in song, but when they do it's pretty great-- especially Will and Jim. Then, he was finally able to say a few words before heading back to work. He made an announcement (which I'll get to in a bit) and he said some great things about our favorite bow tie wearing news director.
Mac spent the day being confused. Leona had her ride to the cemetery with her and Pruit. We find out Pruit is even more of a piece of trash than we originally thought and Leona doesn't seem all that happy with how he's handling his PR problems. But they're not just PR problems, they're actually problems. Pruit does not pay women equally to men and he defends his choices. He hires "models" as "living art" for his birthday parties and also defends that. He's scum and Leona has the perfect solution to his problems.
Mac will take over as the ACN's news director. This is the announcement Will made before speaking about Charlie. And, though, Mac thinks it's only to cover up Pruit's PR issues, Will knows damn well she deserves it. So does Leona; it's why she was dragging Mac around all day with Pruit. She's a fix for Pruit, but also for ACN. She'll do the news the way the news should be done.
With Mac's promotion comes Jim's promotion. Mac offered EP of News Night to Don, but he wanted to stay at 10 with Eliot. So, Jim was offered the job who then offered Maggie his job. She didn't want it, though, because she is going to interview for a field producer job in DC.
This isn't a problem for her and Jim's new relationship, though. It was for a little while, since Maggie was a little concerned he was the one to suggest Maggie for the job in DC in the first place. She thought he was trying to put distance between them after only three days together. He was just trying to get her the job she wants and deserves. And, even though she isn't taking the job at News Night, she and Jim aren't going to break up. They'll travel back and forth on weekends or meet in the middle. And Jim doesn't have a great track record with long distance relationships, but he's sure this one is different. Why, you ask? He wasn't in love with any of them. AHHHHHHHH. Sorry, it's been a LONG road for them. I really wanted to hear that after last week's episode.
Some other things of note:
Don and Sloan are going strong, which is good. I love them. I love them individually and as a couple. I love that Don stuck with 10 o'clock because he believes in it and he knows it's good. He doesn't even care that he's losing out on a lot more money. He's doing the right thing.
And Sloan was a huge help with the Maggie and Jim confusion. She and Maggie make pretty good friends and I'm really glad we got to see a little of that. I would have liked to see some more of her and Mac before the show ended, but that's okay. They had a good run early on.
It was an episode full of flashbacks starting right before the Northwestern incident and those were all great. We got to see all of our favorites before they were our favorites. Charlie was the backbone of ACN and he is going to be greatly missed.
NEAL IS BACK. Finally! I missed him so very much. I wish his return had more fanfare, but he came back to work and he told the ACNgage assholes what they needed to hear. He's back and he's taking charge. Neal doesn't mess around and I'm so happy he got to come home to his friends/family.
Because that's what ACN is. It's a family. A really incestuous, dysfunctional family that I love and will miss more than you know.
