Mortifed! Episode 213: B-Cumby and the Case of God's Worst Wig (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy)
On this episode, @leylses and @monsterfactoryfanfic begin a new unit on spy media with the classic 1974 novel (and it's 2011 adaptation), Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy! We discuss the difficulty of grappling with dense texts, the limitations of the podcast as critical media project, and approve of the book's handling of messy bisexuals.
Mortified! The Friendship Quest is a podcast where two long-distance friends exchange media recommendations and take a dive into things like the Artemis Fowl-to-Sasuke pipeline, making catboys mainstream with James Cameron, and occasionally invite some friends to play TTRPGs or talk about how Yugi Muto inherited male-pattern baldness from Yami Yugi.
Sometimes you struggle with a dense, meandering text that’s a classic of a whole genre. Sometimes you watch the Sherlock Guy break it off with his boyfriend. And sometimes, just sometimes, you gotta hand it to the bisexual communist homewrecker.
hey gang i am a former zenimax online studios union member (laid off last year ✌) and i need you all to please read this carefully: this is NOT a strike. this is a rally. if a union is to strike, it needs to hold an authorization vote for the strike first. no such vote was held.
please do not spread misinformation or do overzealous things in the name of the devs. this time is chaotic enough for everyone as it is.
if you want to show support, please give feedback to these corporations and say nice things about the work that we all did.
after eight years, I finally updated my huge Historical Fashion Reference & Resources Doc! Now in the form of a MUCH more easily updated Google Doc with better organization, refreshed links, and five more pages of books and online resources.
I know tumblr hates links, but it’s worth it for a doc that I can now update with far more regularity going forward! RIP to the original, you did your duty for far longer than you should have. 😔🙏🏼
This week, @monsterfactoryfanfic and @leylses indulge in the glorious tradition of watching advertisements for video games and going, "Ooh!" "Aah!" or "Neat, but not for me." We did not poison ourselves with Mountain Dew or hot wings this time, but if you have suggestions for future physical trials you can e-mail us at [email protected].
List of highlighted games below the cut at the end of the post!

this episode feels very strange to publish right now because of the xbox news (and especially because said news comes just ahead of the one-year anniversay of my own layoff at the hands of xbox). but at the same time i think it feels especially important to support indie games and to celebrate the craft of making video games and to highlight devs and the community and the joy of it.
anyway please click through and play some demos or watch some trailers. and please watch at least the latin american games showcase or the india games showcase which were both filled to the BRIM with cool titles.
leave positive reviews on games you like, both on itch or on larger storefronts like steam. they don't have to be profound. "this was fun!" is good enough. talk about the games you like. share them with friends. if you can't pay for a game or support patreons or kickstarters, reblog and comment and do something to boost engagement for the craft you like.
our show has an average audience of like, 30-40 people. if five of them find a new game to be excited about, then i will feel like we've done our job.
as a games worker who has been through five layoff scares and one Actual Layoff in the last year (not counting five more scares in the prior two years) i can tell you with near-certainty that the Mood at a certain tech giant's subsidiaries rn is as follows:
no one is getting anything done, everyone is battening down hatches, there are one thousand terrified discord and text threads. meanwhile schrier is publishing articles about how the third 100+ hour title in the FFVII remake trilogy got done in three years in very large part because of [checks notes] 95% employee retention. meanwhile elon musk is a trillionaire.
i am trying so hard to stop complaining all the fucking time bc i can feel myself just repeating the same shit over and over again. but then again the same shit keeps happening over and over again, and we've learned nothing, and everyone's livelihoods are at risk, and nothing is getting made. and there are so many problems to solve to make this sustainable. and the people in power are either stealing from us or doing nothing.
our episode was supposed to be on hansel & gretel: witch hunters and what we learned is that this was just an enjoyable 87 minutes of campy fun, but ultimately not much to talk about.
we will still have a new episode next monday, but it'll likely be about ~5 mins on h&g and then the rest of the time we'll talk about game announcement we're excited about. and we're going to physically restrain ourselves with AI-integrated shock collars that will electrocute us every time we start to talk about kingdom hearts 4.

(we have also planned our next unit and it is Thicc.)
New chapter is up !! Being a warlock isn't as safe as you think, and you have to decide whether to face what your patron is with a smile, or try to force them to see what they've become. This is a two way street, after all !!
Bad Ritual is an interactive Twine-based romance wherein you, a corporate demon hunter, find yourself helplessly bound to an archdemon after your mysterious boss leaves you alone with a clearly unauthorized binding ritual. Who will you ally with: the archdemon, hell-bent on escaping the binding and disappearing forever, or the priestess Tahira, who would hunt him to the very ends of the earth?

Mortified! Episode 211: Glower, Glower, Glower, Work (Snow White and the Huntsman)
On this episode of Mortified, @monsterfactoryfanfic and @leylses continue their trek through TwlsTeD fairy tales with the 2012 dark fantasy film "Snow White and the Huntsman!" We enjoy a heaping serving of Charlize Theron, discuss the late 00's relationship with celebrities, and break down what makes Imagery so critical to art.

Cannot believe this episode was the one where we had a 20+ minute conversation about the unique power of Imagery and its relationship to art. It is a little silly to get so stuck on strong visuals overriding all the mediocre aspects of a piece. But shit, I think it’s worth reconsidering basics every now and then.
