Stephen Althouse
Stephen Althouse is an American contemporary sculptor-turned-photographer.
Raised close to farmers in a rural Pennsylvanian community, inspiration grew from their work with animals and the earth. Throughout his youth and into young adult life, Stephen spent time as a laborer for railroads, stone quarries, and other construction-related pursuits. He has always considered himself “sensitive to the culture of people who approach a life of physical labor with the same humility, and compliant determination as countless generations before them.”
His earlier muses included tools and farm equipment; leather, raw materials, forged metals. Althouse would then loosely assemble the pieces to create a sculptural work. His transition into photography stemmed from a realization that through a lens, he could transcend an original work by manipulating its perception. He continues to utilize both sculptural and photographic elements, crafting pieces out of tools and artifacts (among other things) and capturing them pictorially by manipulating light, angles, and scale.
Althouse is led by an interest in diverse cultures and lifestyles to travel and work abroad. He often times cites his experiences around the world as eye opening, similar to his work in the quarries.
His home base was Miami, Florida. He resided there for 30 years, spending time as a Fine Arts Professor at Barry University. He also taught for schools in France, England, Spain, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands.
Throughout 2003 and 2004, he lived in Belgium as an artist-in-residence at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.
After this, Althouse returned to Pennsylvania and has turned to the Amish community for new inspiration.
