On earth most animals aim to be symmetrical and so have an even amount of limbs. Reading that Rocky had five left me puzzled, obviously he's an alien, but was there precedent in nature for such a phenomenon? What was the point of five rather than 4 or 6? ...Then, I looked at my own hands and felt silly. Still, that connection made me happy.

One really cool thing I learned in my historical geology course is that nature LOVES the number 5. For some weird complicated physics reasons, 5 digits is just a good balance between too few and too many. The first tetrapods had like, 7 or 8 fingers, and slowly whittled down to specifically 5, no more, no less.

Also, while most life is bilateral (or unshaped), any forms of life that *aren’t* bilateral are pentaradially symmetrical! Like starfish, urchins, and I think sand dollars?

Eridians are implied to share an ancestor with humans from the single-cell days, which means they wouldn’t have gotten their pentaradial symmetry from earth. But it would be likely for it to be a convergent evolutionary feature!
