The first time it happens is a big fucking deal for Max. 

It shouldn’t be, not after ten fucking years together, but Max is newly retired and he feels strange an untethered, excited for the future, but it’s scary too, after so many years in a race car. After so many years of only kissing Daniel behind closed doors. It’s not… they’re not doing the whole coming out thing, no big interviews or glossy magazine covers, just a quiet decision that they’re done hiding. 

That if they want to hold hands over dinner or kiss goodbye on the street before heading to the gym or the grocery store or what the fuck ever then. They’re going to do it. Going to kiss in public. Going to touch and act like they’re just any other couple. It sounds freeing, in theory at least, but in practice Max also feels jittery as hell. 

“We don’t have to do this Max, there’s nothing to prove,” Daniel says, dropping his napkin onto an empty plate, the crumbs from his sandwich scattered across the old merch hoodie that he pulled on this morning. 

They’re out for lunch, and afterwards Daniel has a meeting. Max has milk and bread and eggs to buy from the store. Cat food too, if they have the bougie brand that the cats have decided is all they can tolerate now. 

“Maybe there is though. Maybe I want to prove it to myself, Daniel.” 

“Prove what? That you’re my partner? That we’re in this together? I already know all that shit Maxy. Your dick up my arse most nights is a pretty big giveaway.” 

“Ha ha,” Max replies, sarcastic and rolling his eyes, “I’m serious though. I am done with racing, you’re done with racing, I want to be done with hiding too.” 

Daniel nods, fishes a credit card out of his pocket and waves over a waiter, pays for their lunch with a quick swipe. And then they stand, grab their jackets and caps, and leave the little restaurant, their favourite casual spot in the city. It’s a tuesday in December so the streets of Monte Carlo are as quiet as they ever get, but there are still other people rushing by. Still plenty of people could see them and will know.

“I need to be there in ten minutes baby, so it’s now or never. Or well, not never. But…” Daniel’s rambling is cut off by Max’s lips, a quick but firm press, and it’s hardly anything, is chaste enough that no one will even notice probably. 

Maybe.

And yet.

It feels huge and incredible and most importantly, it feels right. After a decade of worrying and hiding and keeping things to just their private little circle, Max feels like his heart might burst right out of his chest onto the pavement between them. The smallest and least passionate kiss probably of their entire relationship and yet this is the one that could change it all. 

It takes three hours before pictures of them are splashed all over twitter and possibly every tabloid website to ever exist. It takes one more hour after that for Daniel to go to his office and print off a copy, to dig out a pink sharpie and draw silly cartoon hearts all around their heads, and to stick it to the fridge. ‘Our first kiss in public Maxy, I think it should get pride of place.’

"We can still call this off," Sebastian reminds him, even though this had been Lewis's idea. If it was up to Sebastian, he would have let everyone else figure it out on their own time, if ever. "We don't owe our privacy to anyone."

Lewis smiles, almost shy, and Sebastian reaches out to take his hand so he will stop fiddling with his shirt cuff. "Maybe not," Lewis says and links their fingers together. "But don't you want to see their faces when we tell them two word champions are engaged to be married to each other?"

Sebastian barks out a laugh. He should have known it was mischief and not shyness in Lewis's smile. "I do," he says, still grinning, and pulls Lewis in for a kiss before they go to face the cameras.

not sure if this counts as a prompt but i’d love to hear your thoughts on seb’s tragic attempts at sexting and lewis’ somehow even more tragic weak spot for it

you're right this isn't a prompt this is a ted talk assignment and baby i have been training to give it for YEARS

i would say seb's sexting technique goes through several distinct phases involving different forms of communication, each embarrassing and devastating in its own way.

they're never both available and awake at the same time during the season, or if they are they're finding time to actually get together, so for a long time there's no call for, like, active back-and-forth sexting. but this doesn't mean seb doesn't sext. no. he just fucking...peppers it in with everything else. lewis has to turn off display notifications on everything he owns. buys an extra-strength privacy screen. he'll look at his phone after a meeting and seb will have sent a question about flight scheduling, a link to an article about e-fuels, the sentence Thinking about your cock! :), and a complaint about PR commitments with absolutely no segues between any of it. and then lewis is thinking about seb thinking about his dick for the next hour. it's unsustainable.

once seb is retired he suddenly has a lot more free time. this technically reduces the russian roulette of lewis's texts but it doesn't improve the situation overall, because they're able to have actual sex less often, so more energy is getting channelled into the written word. but seb hates typing longer things out on his phone, AND he hates spending too much time on his computer, so the end result is that every day or two lewis will get a random email during the day with a fucking. itemized accounting of all the dirty thoughts seb has had about him since the last transmission. Came thinking about you again last night! Mostly was thinking about your ass but also spent some time thinking about how you fucked my mouth on your balcony last month. I really enjoyed that. Overall you sitting on my face is probably still the thing I come thinking about the most, but it might be dethroned soon. Ha. I will keep you updated. Love you! of course, the entire game changes when seb discovers voice notes. on the one hand it's better, because nobody can read a voice note over lewis's shoulder, and lewis can save them for when he's alone without being distracted all day. the downside is that lewis has to increase his daily hydration goals because he's jerking off so much. the texts and the emails were almost cute, sometimes. they weren't always emergencies. the voice notes are emergencies. sometimes it's almost the same as the texts, just seb taking a moment in the middle of gardening or cooking or driving to share a filthy thought. that's bad enough, the slight gravel of seb's voice, the way lewis can picture the exact face he's making when he says Have you ever tried to come in your own mouth? I feel like with all the yoga it should definitely be possible. Put it on the list. but it's worse when lewis puts his earbuds in, braces himself, and presses play only to hear the unmistakeable sounds of seb making himself come. he never sends pictures or videos—that's more lewis's thing—but lewis has endless audio clips of punched-out groans and desperate little gasps.

the one that's most embarrassing for lewis to get turned on by are the calendar invitations. they're not as common—only when they're going to see each other soon—and seb knows how to set them as private, thank god. but when it's been nearly two months, and lewis has been living with nothing but his own hand and his headphones, then yeah, he does get hard when he gets a calendar invite for two hours that's title Putting my whole hand in you! and he thinks that's perfectly natural.
