White and Grey Balancing

Before I began shooting for my magazine images, I took a shot of the model holding a QP card. This allowed me to balance the whites and greys at a later time in Photoshop. I did this by creating two curve adjustment layers for the white and black areas. Then for each layer, I used the eye drop tool to select the appropriate area on the QP card. For black I selected the sunglasses as an alternative, as I felt I gained better results. This may have been due to the positioning that the QP card was being held in conjunction to the lighting.

I can then drag and drop these adjustments to the images I wish to use for my MONO magazine project.

Here is an example of how a photograph can be taken effectively from both close-up, and from a distance. Although these images do not both portray a male model wearing sunglasses, they both have a specific style, being smart and cool, which would strongly appeal to a particular audience. Therefore if used from a retail perspective, it would sell and gain profit. 

The subject to the left of the image also shows how cropping can dramatically change a photograph. It is unclear whether the cropping occurred before or after the photograph was taken. However, whilst capturing a similar style as far as fashion is concerned to the photograph on the right, the close up of the face from a profile view shows much more detail and creates a more dramatic image, whilst building a better understanding of character.

If I was to re do my shoot. I would concentrate a lot more on different ways of cropping, and also close-ups of the actual product itself.

I've studied the front cover of a magazine that I read myself. These covers feature a lot of text, which are arranged in various ways, all in which are visually pleasing.

Here is an example of how images can be arranged in a grid, in a way that is pleasing the eye. Although the layout of mine is different, this is useful to observe.

They have used the largest space, to fit an image that creates a main focus for the narrative in which all the photographs piece together. It shows a group of people talking, and the food they have prepared/are eating.

The images surrounding, vary from close up shots of the food, as well as individual and group portraits.

White back drop

Main light/soft-box to the left of diagram

Assistant holding metallic reflector to the right of the diagram

The main light/soft-box will create soft lighting on the right side of the model’s face, creating a slight shadow on the other side. The metallic reflector will reflect some of this light, back onto the left side of his face, keeping a slight shadow, yet making the light more even.

Close up photographs of food - Don’t use these by themselves, but accompanied by an image, preferably a landscape shot, in which the main focus is a restaurant or food market, this may be relevant and useful.

Canary Wharf

I have decided not to shoot at Canary Wharf.

Pros -

Lots of restaurants

Park

Cons - 

Upper class/business area

Not very cultural

Lacks diversity - All very alike

Soho

I have visited Soho a couple of times, and I found is much more fitting to this project. I will return to continue shooting for the 'Pictures on a Page' Magazine Project.

Soho Square - People/Statues/Building

Range of cafes/restaurants/coffee houses

Church

I will make sure I avoid any areas surrounding Soho, such as Oxford Street and Region Street as they are very commercial.

Studio Mono Shoot - 28th April

Unfortunately our model did not show, after making several phone calls and emails, we had no option but to find an alternative. We called up several other people who we had considered, however we couldn't find anyone available. Being left with minimal time, we resorted to using each other as models.
