it's so dull to interpret a reference literally without interpreting the meaning of it. "madame x" was a controversial painting - it defied the social norms of presenting the sitter in their true likeness and instead exaggerated her features, her figure, the colour of her skin, to make her look like an elevated representation of herself. her strap was originally falling off her shoulder suggestively and it caused such a stir that it had to be painted back into its proper place!the sitter, virginie amƩlie avegno, was known to be beautiful but to exaggerate it so much in this painting was considered beyond vulgar.
now how does that translate to the modern day in a society where shame hardly exists, where everything is erotic and nothing is sexual? what would defy cultural norms around celebrity? what would someone have to wear to cause the same kind of controversy as madame x, and why wasn't claire foy wearing something like that?
