I could write a whole essay about this, but.

Fanfiction as a collective exists as a combination of the ideal state and all the broken pieces that are left behind. Fanfiction shows us all the things that should have happened, if the world was a little bit kinder: someone adopts Harry Potter, the Avengers live domestically together, people fall in love and admit it. Fanfiction says, things are awful but we’re kind anyway, because we can be, because kindness costs little and gives much. It is democracy at its best, a collection of people solving problems together, solving plotholes and heartbreaks and deaths, a conversation of solution responding to solution because the whole of fandom is, itself, its own canon.

But at the same time, fanfiction is about all of those holes and jagged edges and wounds left unhealed, about what happens when the war is over and everyone who’s left needs to go back home. It’s about the fact that surviving is usually the hardest part, and we rarely get to choose what’s done to us but we do get to choose how we survive afterwards. It’s about the child soldiers who no longer have a war, and about the trauma of getting past the trauma you’ve survived. It’s about injury and depression and PTSD. It’s about recovery, yes, but also about those things that do not recover, those things that will never recover. It is a reminder that we live in a world where many people don’t get white picket fences and 2.5 kids and a happily ever after, but also a reminder that there is life beyond that, survival, yes, but also life. It is a reminder that characters’ lives don’t end with the last page and nor too do people’s lives end with their trauma, but that after that hurt comes comfort and healing and putting one foot in front of another because the best way to get through hell is to keep going.

To add to this, in case someone in the back didn’t get the subtext screaming from this wonderful little essay - both the sweetly beautiful and the ugly raw and everything in between are completely valid, appropriate expressions of fandom. None of it is out of bounds, because exploring the range of human experience for our own joy or satisfaction or exorcism is not only appropriate, it is NEEDFUL.

If it isn’t to your taste, click away. But the fan created content is a wholly appropriate space for a person to escape to, whatever their reasons and needs and delights may be.

I’m glad you appreciated my post, but I just want to be clear: I DON’T think “none of it is out of bounds”. There are things that we as a fandom community should shun, as we as a human community should shun them, like racist and misogynist content. And doing that means not saying “all is welcome here” but saying that intolerance and bigotry and hatred are NOT welcome. When we put the burden of staying away from bigoted and hateful content solely on the people who would be most hurt by that content, we are saying that that content is acceptable, and I at least am not willing to do that. Black fans and other fans of color, female fans, disabled fans, queer fans–everyone should have this space to escape to, but while we’re still allowing antiblackness and misogyny and ableism and all of these other problems to fester virtually unchecked in our community, they don’t. What I’m talking about isn’t about sex or kinks or who ships what; I want to see the sweetly beautiful and the ugly raw and lots of things in between. I’m talking about the pervasive erasure or maligning of characters of color and female characters (and especially female characters of color), about the use of disability as a prop or something to be saved from, about the white supremacist rhetoric thinly veiled in some Harry Potter fanfiction and the fascist rhetoric thinly veiled in some Star Wars rhetoric, and all of those other ways in which fandom replicates the white, Christian, male-centric culture many of its participants live in. We have a responsibility not to let pretty words and pretty ideas–mine included–be used to make people perpetuating those ideas feel welcome and so many marginalized people feel unwelcome.
