Grumpy Young Millenial

I know in a lot of ways I am very privileged but I am So Bloody Sick of being constantly stressed about money.

I’m doing everything right. I sidelined dreams of working in creative or very competitive professions for the time being, prioritising a secure income. I work 37.5 hours a week at a desk doing things I don’t care about so that I can support myself through more hours of study I have to force my burnt-out brain to do. I’m sick and tired of this vicious cycle of feeling like crap, buying things to make myself feel better and then feeling guilty for spending $5 on a goddamn eclair on a Saturday morning. 

And I feel like a stupid, whiny, and - that worst of insults - entitled child for talking about how miserable and futile I feel, ‘cause I know I have it pretty good, but I am just so cranky right now that I drag myself through the working week with gritted teeth and the rigorous application of caffeine and I still struggle every month to make ends meet, let alone save, or travel, or make Big Life Purchases, and all the time I’m falling behind with study, I’m not improving myself, I’m not being creative and I’m not even gaining new skills I can use in the go-nowhere job that’s sucking all my time and energy into screens and spreadsheets and telephone wires.

I’m grateful for all I have, I really am, but today I’m frustrated and don’t know what the next step is to get me somewhere I want to be. Maybe an eclair will make me feel better.
