Roy day!
Ughhhhhhhh…..
god every single phase of the royai backstory is INSANEEEEE. it truly is about the implications
Roy and Riza in Leon and Ada's fit 🫣
The thing that really gets me about royai is that they could've met for the first time in Ishval as two idealistic soldiers that bonded over their hopes and dreams getting crushed by the war. That alone would’ve been tragic, enough to explain how they became so close.
But no, Arakawa had to go the extra mile and make it even more complicated. She had to make them share the responsibility and guilt over flame alchemy. They’re literally the only ones who can fully understand each other’s pain.
The depth of their bond is simply insane.
Pure chaos and happiness (in the background))
It’s just an accident drawing, juuust a little thought………….
The guys in the background are probably doing something like that "crazy walk-dance in the church" scene from The Office.
Forgive Me (1/2)
In the previous chapter when he meets Major Armstrong in the bathroom, Roy is like "Fullmetal knew he could be used as a human weapon. He was aware of the risks when he signed up. We can't allow exceptions because he's a minor."
Then with Riza it's "I want them to face as few obstacles as possible so they can keep moving forward."
I believe this man is incapable of being completely honest with his feelings unless he's talking to Riza, Hughes or (presumably) Madame Christmas.
I think about this scene in His Battlefield Once More A LOT.
Hughes is FUMING, but he calms down as soon as Roy averts his gaze. Which is interesting because Roy had been looking into his eyes, seemingly unbothered by his outburst, up until he said, 'I'll make her happy…!!'
I think Roy averts his gaze because he thinks of Riza and how he can't make her happy. Seeing his averted gaze, Hughes calms down and realizes that 'to own a house with the woman you love and live normally' IS NOT 'a happiness that can exist anywhere.' At least not for Roy. No, because the woman he loves is there with him, living the same hellish nightmare and committing the same crimes as him. He will never be able to go back home, smile in front of her, and pretend he isn't broken beyond repair.
He’s just too cool to not draw him, okay?…
Roy Mustang and Riza Hawkeye | Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
"Because there's someone I have to protect."
you can't convince me this wasn't on purpose, even his expression is the same
sure there are many reasons why royai is such an objectively good ship (complicated backstory, their joint guilt, the fact that their very particular experiences mean that out of everyone in the entire world they're the only two people who can genuinely understand each other)
BUT ALSO!! Royai as a ship is just so objectively hot. The will-they-won't-they of it all, the idea of long-suffering yearning...it's just Hot.
roy lost his eyesight and i’m once again reminded i am in the minority of people who think he shouldn’t have remained blind lol
I'm with you. He would get discharged if he remained blind. All of those years as a dog of the military would be for nothing. Yeah, he could still make himself useful in other ways and help with the reconstruction of Ishval, but there would be no guarantee that his other goals would be reached, like bringing democracy back to Amestris or making the trials happen.
He would also become pretty much useless in battle. Sure, having Riza guide him during the final battle worked, but that wasn't a typical battle. In a regular battle where you don't have multiple people attacking one guy at the same time, he'd be a sitting duck as other people, probably just Riza too since he'd not be a military official anymore and have no subordinates, protected him, which in turn would make whoever was protecting him more likely to get harmed. And that's the reason he gets so down when someone calls him useless in the rain. He fights to protect his people. He's reckless to a fault, he doesn't really mind his own well-being.
ok. wait wait wait. it’s taken me 20+ years of engaging with this story to realize why roy is saying here. in his mind, if riza can’t keep going if he dies, then how will she kill him if it ever came to that? omg. he’s saying she can’t be trusted to take him out if she’s going to die if he does. i’m so stupit why did this take me two decades and countless rereads to read this scene this way.
The last thing you'll ever see
