Something I’ve never really understood is why some medical students/residents/whomever complain so much about the social work aspects of healthcare. It’s one thing to be frustrated or annoyed by it, but a lot of people talk about it as if it were just a distractor from some kind of purer practice of medicine. That makes no sense to me. Social determinants are not extraneous or accessory to health, they *are* health. Someone’s health and the context of their life are inextricable. To me it sounds like complaining about the patient having blood. Sure, that might be annoying sometimes when there are complicated pathologies involved, but of course the patient has blood. They’re a living human. And of course the patient has a financial situation, a home life, a family, etc. that affect their health. Addressing social determinants is not “dealing with bullshit,” it’s being complete in your care. It requires the same problem solving skills as picking a medication. And every doctor has to do it. I don’t understand why some people think “real medicine” is closer to the algorithmic decision making of a multiple choice test than to addressing the actual problems of actual patients.
radiant to inform that this is now a medblr ((((':
i finally got a grade high enough to enter med school here in brasil. it's in an amazing university, reaaaally close to my home, the campus is beautiful and i'm already in the new students online groups.
this has been an insane, at least 3 year long path. i received the news 13 days ago and it brings so much joy to ny heart.
one thing i must stop doing, though, is reading tumblr posts from med students. all that no sleep/no social life/no rest kind of struggle makes me feel really anxious since i have other very important, life changing projects besides med school. i'm glad to say that i went trough premed sleeping very well and keeping close friends close, to say the least, and i am try hopeful to keep my sanity. the good part is that there are a lot of useful resources on note taking and smart studying on this site.
very excited to enter the medical community keeping my values close to my heart and helping to build a more working-class oriented, feminist, inclusive medical field.
anyway, i only rarely post here but thought it would be important to, this time (:
Found this on pinterest and thought it’s a good idea to share. Never suppress your emotions, acknowledge and embrace them 💕 they can almost always teach you a great lesson about yourself!

Courses in Russian online
Hi, babes.
A couple of days ago I found the official site of Pushkin Institute and it’s awesome. It is translated into several languages, e.g. English, Chinese, German, Spanish and others.
There are Russian courses for students of any level.
There are also lots of courses in Russian, for example, a course on cooking the Russian way, modern Russian art, Old Church Slavonic course and many other topics. Unfortunately, I don’t think there are subtitles for these courses and the courses themselves are in Russian, so I’d recommend them to people with B1+.
And here you can take a test to assess your level of fluency.
There’s also a site for children here. It has very simple materials so it might be suitable for A1-A2 levels. Here are words by themes and here is a little video on verbs of motion and here - on types of verbs.

“When I advise, “Don’t do anything that isn’t play!” some take me to be radical, even insane. I earnestly believe, however, that an important form of self-compassion is to make choices motivated purely by our desire to contribute to life rather than out of fear, guilt, shame, duty, or obligation. When we are conscious of the life-enriching purpose behind an action we take, when the sole energy that motivates us is simply to make life wonderful for others and ourselves, then even hard work has an element of play in it. Correspondingly, an otherwise joyful activity performed out of obligation, duty, fear, guilt, or shame will lose its joy and eventually engender resistance.”
Marshall B. Rosenberg, Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life
all bodies deserve to be accommodated in medicine, and that means understood in their particularities and their uniqueness. there is no one standard body that doctors should be trained to treat–bodies are incredibly diverse, and that’s a feature, not a bug. specific interventions and adaptations for the bodies of all people (including fat ppl, dark-skinned ppl, disabled ppl, trans ppl, addicted ppl, and all others) are perfectly reasonable and normal things to expect from a field that purports to provide human health care services. this requires not only bringing the expertise of people with marginalized bodies into the field, but completely revolutionizing the norming, controlling, punishing nature of institutional medicine
