Lucas: A Modern Orpheus in Season 4 and Perseus in Season 5
I’m sure many people noticed the motifs of the Orpheus and Eurydice story in Lucas and Max's tragic events in Season 4.
The legend of Orpheus and Eurydice is a tragic Greek myth about a talented musician named Orpheus. He descends into the Underworld to retrieve his beloved wife, Eurydice. With his mournful melodies, Orpheus enchants Hades, the god of the Underworld. However, just as they are about to return to the living world, Orpheus looks back too soon, and Eurydice is lost to him forever.
Lucas knows Max's favorite song, which they successfully use to keep Vecna at bay for as long as possible - same as Orpheus, he uses music to confront danger.
He does everything he can to protect Max, driven by his love and devotion. However, when the music stops - through no fault of his own - he turns and witnesses her dying.
In Season 5, their story will conclude happily, and I believe Lucas will parallel Perseus, one of the most famous heroes in Greek mythology, as he saves Max, his Andromeda.
Before meeting and saving his future wife, Perseus was tasked with killing Medusa, a Gorgon whose gaze could turn people to stone. He was given gifts from the gods to assist him on his mission, including a mirrored shield (to safely view her reflection) and winged sandals (to enable him to fly).
In contrast, Lucas may not use literal mirrors as weapons, but he is often portrayed as someone who acts as a metaphorical mirror, forcing others to confront uncomfortable truths. For instance:
In Season 4, he attempts to reach out to Max multiple times.
He tells Jason that his sense of normalcy has turned him into a raging psychopath.
In Season 1, he questions Mike about his blind trust in Eleven.
While not literally flying, Lucas is shown jumping really high to score the winning shot in the basketball game.
Perseus defeated Medusa by cutting off her head, and Lucas says this in Season 4.
After killing Medusa, Pegasus is born from her blood, which in the myth symbolizes the creative energy released when the monster (representing one's shadow) is confronted. In Will's painting, Lucas is the only character depicted on a horse.
However, in Greek mythology, Perseus did not ride Pegasus. We can draw a connection to Erica's love for My Little Pony, which offers a colorful, innocent, and optimistic interpretation of the winged horse.
Andromeda, who is Perseus's love interest, is chained to a rock by the sea, left vulnerable to an approaching monster.
In contrast, Max is not literally chained but is in a hospital bed, connected to medical devices. In the teaser, she is shown unconscious and defenseless as demodogs invade the hospital.
Sooo in Season 5, Lucas will save Max from the monster, will continue holding a metaphorical mirror and may even cut off some heads.
Lucas is 100% Perseus 😁
