Today I learned that I am a mosaic!

Women in STEM moment here:

I know this thanks to Mary F. Lyon, who went to the University of Cambridge at a time when only 500 women were allowed to attend (in contrast to the 5,000 men enrolled) and who were only allowed to receive a titular degree despite taking the same courses and exams as men. She went on to earn her PhD. 

She became a mouse geneticist and discovered X-inactivation in females! She discovered it by observing that female mice, not males, had a mottled coat color when they were heterozygous for genes involving coat color that were X-linked. It’s also called “Lyonization” in her honor. For example, X-inactivation is why calico cats can only be female because their gene for coat color is on their X-chromosome. 

Every woman at their 32-cell stage of life had one of their X-chromosomes inactivated randomly and any daughter cells from those cells have the same one inactivated. We are all mosaics!!!
