So I’m still cycling through rereading all the Shadowhunter chronicles books, and while rereading The Red Scrolls of Magic, I noticed that Asmodeus says he’d have to kill Alec if he knew he was Magnus’s father- but then at the end of City of Heavenly Fire, doesn’t he just… tell them all? And like it’s never discussed that that’s dangerous knowledge? And also doesn’t Simon giving up his immorality mean that Asmodeus can walk the earth now? Because that’s why he wanted immortality in The Ref Scrolls of Magic. I’m confused 😭

Friends, Romans, countrymen/women/people. I do understand why this is a burning question. Between TDA and TWP we have missed quite a bit of Kit and Ty's lives. Dating-wise, we only know about Hazel, and that was very clearly not in any way a serious relationship.

But unfortunately, any real answer would contain spoilers. Not even just for the first book! When Ty and Kit meet again, they don't know these things about each other either — Kit doesn't know if Ty's dated or kissed anyone, and Ty only knows about Hazel. Which he genuinely has no jealous feelings about because it is pretty clear that Kit's heart was not involved there.

I did not want either Kit or Ty to feel that the situation between them was impacted by the existence of some romantic rival. It's not the case, there's no love triangle, Kit and Ty's challenges come from other things: memory and forgiveness, understanding, star-crossed challenges of the epic sort.

Ty and Kit are probably not each other's first kiss. But they definitely would be each other's first most other things. :)

i miss julian SO much and fear for his reaction to dru being kidnapped and ty leaving the scholomance to go off on this dangerous mission with the first heir 😭 our man is going to be STRESSED thinking he’s lost 3/4 of his kids, will we hear from him and emma in TLKOF and see his reaction to finding out what dru and ty are up to? (i wouldn’t be surprised if he tried to burn down the world to get dru back he’s THE julian blackthorn)

Poor Julian! Yes, it's true Dru and Ty are older than they were last time we saw them with Julian, but I think Julian will continue to wish to protect them. I think he will wish to protect them on into their adulthood, and when he is ninety-six and Dru is ninety-two or whatever, he will continue to regard her as his baby sister, and Ty as his baby brother. (Who is ninety-three.)

Ultimately though Julian has a role like the TID characters in The Last Hours: he can worry, and he can wish to protect his siblings, but in the end he isn't the one who can do what has to be done. Only the protagonists can do that. He can't burn the world down to save Dru, in that she has to save herself. He can set little fires though. :)

Hi! My question is in regard to the functioning of the Clave. It's always fascinated me how it functions. Is it a democracy? Do candidates work with any political ideologies like mundane governments? Do they have stuff like budget sessions, taxes, etc? Has the working of the Clave changed in any way since the Cohort? I'd greatly appreciate your insight on this. Thank you so much for your books, can't wait for TLKOF! :)

You know, years and years ago a dad wrote to me, because his daughter was in the hospital and he wanted her to get a copy of City of Glass but it wasn't out yet. I sent her an ARC and by way of thanks he offered to do all the Shadowhunters' taxes, because he was an accountant, and I said, "Sure."

That was thirteen years ago and I still see his daughter when I go to Toronto for signings, she's grown up and married now. :) Anyway this is relevant because it's a cute story and he is literally the only person who has ever previously asked me about Shadowhunter taxes.

So, as I discussed with him at the time, Shadowhunters are in an odd tax situation because all their funding comes not from within their society but from outside it. Basically, they collect tithes from mundane religions and governments and they spend that money on the salaries of Shadowhunters and there isn't really a reason for Shadowhunters to pay taxes back on it because the Clave pays for what it needs from the tithes it gets. Also I would not fancy trying to get taxes out of some of the weirdos we have met (Tatiana.)

Shadowhunters stay very very far away from mundane ideologies, wars, and politics. That would remain the case even with Alec in charge. (No one is paying anything to the Cohort, they're not in charge of stuff and it's almost impossible to reach them.)

There are probably some governments that don't pay them, but or don't have a department that even knows about them, but involving them too much in that seems bad because you don't want their protecting people to be dependent on those people's nationality or religion or anything like that. They're there to protect humans from demons full stop.

You know I like a masquerade party. In this case, it's a revel with masks, but the attendees don't get to choose which mask they wear, they get assigned them, based on what the individuals holding the revel think of them.

So yes, they are symbolic! Just like the two intertwined crowns on the main edition.

Hi Cassie! I hope you're doing great! My question is about ages. In the LKoF sampler, Dru says Emma and Julian are 20. If 4 years have passed since Queen of Air and Darkness, and they were just about to go on their travel year there (so, nearly 18) shouldn't they now be 21, almost 22? Much love from Argentina!

The LKOF sampler is made from a very early version of the book, so there will be typos, etc. Honestly I'm surprised there aren't more spelling errors. They're mentioned as 21 in the actual book.

We’ll certainly see them. In Last King of Faerie we get Kieran’s POV on what’s happening in the world of Faerie in this very … unusual time. Some of it follows on from The Judgement of King Kieran in Better in Black, but it’s not a problem if you haven’t read that, the book catches you up.

Max trueblood be in wicked powers how would Izzy Maryse Alec feel about knowing they have cousin and nephew

Max does get a mention because it turns out he’s been working on decoding that prophecy (Better in Black again. But if you haven’t read Time of Two, the book will catch you up) with Ragnor. At this point Maryse, Alec and Izzy do know about Max and his family but things rocket along in Last King of Faerie at such a pace, there isn’t time for them to think about it, though I think it would be interesting to know their thoughts in the future.
