Being in the Resistance was hard enough, but itâs made harder by the fact that everyone hates you. They think youâve got something to prove, think youâre trying to overtake their Golden Boy.
Even Poe believes it; but itâs all a lie.
Warnings: mentions of death and past trauma, swearing, masses of angst, OOC Poe.
Word Count: 5k
You could see the way they looked at you, hear the way they mumbled under their breath whenever your X-Wing hit the landing bays or you turned the corner into the mess hall. You knew they hated you, it was clear to see. Wondering eyes found you during every pre-mission meet, but you tried not to let it get to you.Â
The Resistance could be a cruel place sometimes, but you knew it was all part of the job.
Dameron was no differentâwhich was the worst part of all.Â
hi girll, I was wondering if you would be interested in writing about Conrad Fisher again bc I think you are one of a kind when it comes to writing. I remember the time I spent my birthday week reading your fics and I'm just craving for moreee!!

tangerine. part three | [carmen berzatto x reader]
Fic Masterpost | AO3
Carmen shows up at your diner after five years, and everything comes flooding back like it was only yesterday.
Warnings: swearing, angst, mature themes [discussions about drugs, workplace abuse, family problems]
Word count: 2.5k
PART THREE
You closed up the diner like it was any other normal day. The tables were clear, the kitchen was clean. You had two ripe tangerines in your tote bag, next to the giant bunch of jangling keys that locked up the entire building and more.
As you approached the park, you fought against the urge to laugh. But not just a normal laughâ a cackle, a giggle, one that expelled every innate emotion that you had in your gut at the fact that Carmen fucking Berzatto just showed up out of the blue.Â
Heâd really walked straight into the diner and had the audacity to ask you to quit, to throw in the towel, to leave everyone behind for something new and exciting. Your shared dream. You laughed again, because how the fuck could this reality be real?Â
Five years ago, heâd got mad at you for supposedly attempting the very same thing that heâd just asked of you today. Heâd been vile, and cruel, assuming that you were there to tell him to quit, to give up, when all youâd wanted to do was show him how much you cared. Today, Carmen entered Lucky Strike knowing that he was going to see you again, his request for you to leave had been premeditated. He was guilty.Â
And you couldnât fucking believe it.Â
You slapped a hand over your mouth as you tread through the park home. It was all a bit too much, all too surreal and dreamlike that you wondered if, when you woke up tomorrow, youâd find out that none of it even fucking happened.Â
It was impossible to sleep. When you closed your eyes, scenes from Union Square Cafe played under eyelids. When you opened them again, they were replaced by the look on Carmenâs face earlier that day. Etched in your mind once moreâ it was impossible to fucking sleep.
Spur of the moment, you texted your sister. You hadnât heard from her in a while. She still lived in Chicago, she was still closer to Carmen than youâd ever been for the last five years, until heâd entered the diner and thrown your world upside down once again.Â
In the early hours, just as the birds started chirping from their lowly lit branches, you looked up Carmenâs new restaurant on the internet. It was the standardâ a small bio about who was running the place, a paragraph about its history as the Original Beef of Chicago, and a restaurant opening date.
Sprawled in a generic and minimalist font, you made a mental note of its opening night.Â
During the lunch rush the next day, your sister texted you back.
Come and see me! Come and stay for a bit. Youâre always welcome.
You glanced at the message quickly, balancing three plates on one arm, before you dropped your phone back in the front pocket of your apron.
You spent your break in the walk-in freezer, desperately trying not to feel anything.
This went on for several weeks.
The same routine: not sleeping, looking up The Bearâs website, glancing at your sisterâs text messageâ unopened and unreadâ and then youâd start the cycle all over again.
âKiddo?â Paulieâs familiar and sweet-as-sugar voice sounded from outside the walk-in. Youâd been inside for ten minutes or so on this particular shift, but itâd become a habit since Carmen had appeared like a shadow back into your life. âIf you want to become a piece of refrigerated produce then come and say it to my face!â
Begrudgingly, you got up from your spot by the tangerines and opened the door. Paulieâs concerned face was enough to make you want to cry.
Without a word, you wrapped your arms around him. His concerned expression softened as he embraced you like no tomorrow.
âCome on,â he said softly. âWeâre taking five! Be back soon.â He addressed the room.Â
âYes, Chef!â yelled the ensemble of fry cooks.Â
Paulie took you out the back. He plucked a cigarette from his pack and placed it betwixt your lips. You didnât move, didnât say a word, until he lit the end for you.
âThanks,â you said sullenly, inhaling deeply as smoke billowed around the two of you.
Paulie lit his own, then crossed his arms. âWhat the hell are you doinâ?âÂ
You looked up at him childishly. âI want to be a tangerine.âÂ
Paulie scoffed, but it wasnât laced with amusement. âCome onâ whatâs going on? Youâve been confined to that fucking freezer for weeks. Youâre freakinâ all of us out.â
You turned away quickly, taking another drag. âItâs nothing.â
âYou think I was born yesterday, kiddo? You think I canât tell what this shit is about?â
You exhaled, flicking ash on the floor.
âCarmyâs really messed with your head, huh?â
In an instant, you melted. You turned to face him, and the tears came before you could even stop them.Â
âCarmen Berzatto is a piece of shit!â you yelled. âSo he walks in here after five fucking years like itâs nothing, and he looks at usâ at meâ like heâs happy to be back. He eats our food, he smiles, he laughs, and offers me a cigarette, but he doesnât fucking get it!âÂ
Paulieâs face stayed exactly the same, like he knew what you were about to say before youâd said it. He nodded at you, prompting you to keep going.
âHe doesnât get how long it took me to get over him. All that shit when we worked together, the lengths I went to to make sure he knew he was appreciated and loved. Paulieâ you should have heard the shit he said about us when I went to Union Square Cafe. He looked at me like I wasnât anything, like I was trying to ruin his career. Heâ he told me he never wanted to see me againâŚâ
You breathed a few times, chest rising and falling rhythmically. In silent unison, you and Paulie took a drag of your cigarettes, exhaling in time.
âI donât know why he came back,â you said softly. âHe broke his own promise, and now Iâm left to wonder why he did any of it. Itâs ruining my life.â
Tears dropped from your chin gently. You dried your face as best you could, using your sleeve sloppily.Â
All the while, Paulie looked at you intentlyâ listening, learning, caring.
He took a drag. âSo, when are you going to Chicago?âÂ
Your anger returned tenfold. âWhat the fuck are you talking about? What are you even saying right nowâ!â
âYouâre going to Chicago.â He interrupted you like it was a full-time job. âOf course, youâre fucking going. He asked you.âÂ
âIâ! How do you know that?â
Paulie shrugged. âHe asked me.âÂ
âHe asked you?âÂ
âBefore he followed you on your break. He asked. I told him you can do whatever the hell you want with your life, that he can ask you to do whatever he thinks is your fit.âÂ
You couldnât believe what you were hearing.Â
âSweetheart, you know how much I love you. If Carmy thinks you can do more, then I know you think you can too. And I think you should.âÂ
Paulie smiled softly, eyes glassy. He placed his hands on your shoulders to keep you steady.Â
âI think you should reach for the damn stars, kiddo. God knows youâre good enough.âÂ
Like a tonne of bricks, your chest collapsed. You dropped your cigarette to the floor and wrapped your arms around Paulieâs neck. He encased you immediately, dropping everything for this moment.Â
He wanted you to go. He wanted you to succeed. He wanted you to do whatever the hell you wanted to do.Â
So why the hell didnât you want that too?
You realised then, while Paulie held you like the opposite of a burden, that youâd needed his blessing. Youâd needed Lucky Strikeâs blessing. The guilt of thinking of a different world had been eating you alive ever since it had come into your life in the form of Carmen Berzatto.
This was it.
You left New York for Chicago a few weeks later.
Youâd be staying with your sister for a bit. Your time there coincided with the opening of The Bear. As soon as you landed at OâHare, it all felt real.
The first week was nice, a proper break from your usual routine in NYC. You ate at bakeries, rekindled your love for deep-dish, and spent hours walking around the city alone.
On a few occasions, you passed The Bear. You peered through the windows from the opposite side of the street, not seeing much from your limited view.Â
When the opening night arrived, you left your sisterâs place early. Service wasnât until 5pm, but you left her house a few hours beforehand.Â
You hadnât booked, had no reservation to your name, but youâd wanted to avoid any notion that youâd been thinking about this day for weeks. Carmen didnât deserve to know youâd been pondering everythingâ that would come at a later dateâ and for now, you simply needed the strength to approach the entrance more than anything.
An hour before doors opened, you stood outside The Bear on a decently sunny July evening in Chicago. A cigarette shook in your fingers as you inhaled, then exhaled, then flicked ash on the floor.Â
Abruptly, the front door swung open. âHey, hey, hey! Donât fuck up my floor out here, ah!â He was a severe and slightly haggard looking man, donned in a fancy suit and dialled up to ten.
âSorry,â you said, raising your hands guiltily.Â
âJust smoke around the corner instead, huh? Itâs our fucking opening night.â He gestured to further down the street.
âSorry, Iâm real sorry,â you repeated, making a show of stubbing out your cigarette courteously.Â
âGod,â he muttered, turning back to the door.
âHey!â you yelled suddenly, taking yourself by surprise. He turned back, looking you up and down a bit but not saying a word. âIs Carmen inside?â
The guy stopped, surveying you with added interest. âWhoâs askinâ?â
âNo one,â you blurted out. âAn old friend, maybe. Heâ ahâ he asked me to come.â
He glanced at his watch. âYouâre early.â
âI know, I know I am.â You fought your words out, trying desperately not to sound like a lunatic.Â
He regarded you then, not with peaked interest or animosity or anything bad, but with care. You wondered if he could see it all in your eyes, see what you were trying to communicate.
He nodded once. âCome in.â He turned back to the restaurant before you could say a word. You followed him with subtle hesitation.
The smell encased you immediately. Spices, herbs, roast chicken and steak and pesto and all of it; the smell of a gorgeous restaurant. What caught you off guard from all the other scents, however, was the citrus.Â
You glanced at the bar as soon as you entered the dimly lit, neat, spaceâ tangerines sliced up beside a cocktail shaker.Â
You relaxed instantly.
âWait here, two seconds,â said the waiter, or who you assumed was one. He was dressed like one, and walked around the restaurant with a prowess that exuded I deserve to be here.
You waited by the door, not wanting to over step, as he walked through the door to the kitchen. It swung on its hinges rhythmically, swaying to the beat of your own heart.
Within seconds, you heard a ruckus. âRichie, Richie, Richieâ service is in less than a fucking hour and you seriously think I have time for this shit?â
âShe said you asked her to come, cousin! Itâs not my fucking fault!â
âJustâ shut the hell up! Let me handle thisâ,â
âNo need to bite my fucking head offâ,â
As the door opened, you heard a final âEnough!â from Carm. He was turned back to the kitchen, obviously disgruntled from the distraction.
You froze immediately. Was this all a fucking terrible idea? You shouldâve just booked a table, shouldâve told him that you were planning on showing up, shouldâve, shouldâveâ
âHey,â Carmen said softly, breathlessly. You caught his eyes then, and felt your body buzz with adrenaline.Â
You stayed put, clutching a hand to your tote so tightly that your knuckles turned white. âHi,â you said. Silence descended upon the restaurant once more.
Carmen moved away from the kitchen door, the subtle shuck shuck of its door reverberating around the room.Â
He opened his mouth to speak, but you beat him to it. âIâm sorryâ I didnât tell you I was coming, and I know itâs such an inconvenience on whatâs probably going to be the most stressful night of your life, and I should have fucking calledâ,â
âNo, noâ donât. Itâs fineâ,â he said, stepping towards you with each beat.Â
âItâs not, and we both know that. I just couldnât book a damn table, Iâm so stupid for that.â
âItâs okay,â he said, bridging the gap between the two of you.Â
âIs it really? It doesnât feel like it.â
âNo, Iâm just a stressed piece of shit. Itâs fine, itâsâ,â He stopped before you, and halted to take a breath finally. Then, he smiled. He smiled so wide you couldnât believe it. âItâs more than fine actually.â
You finally allowed yourself to feel. The buzz went from your feet to your neck and all the way back again, like a glowing light. Carmen stood before you with a look on his face that you would never be able to describe. Dazzling, maybe. Dazzling was close.
You scoffed suddenly, taking yourself by surprise again. âHello.â You said again, but it felt fucking stupid coming out of your mouth.
âHi,â he said, equally in awe at you being before him.
âPaulie told me everything,â you said softly. âHe told me all of it.â
âPaulieâs a good man,â Carm replied.
âYes, he is.âÂ
âThey all are.âÂ
You smiled unstoppably. Carm followed suit. Being opposite him here, face to face, almost nose to nose, was impossible not to rejoice at.Â
His restaurant was another beautiful thingâ even looking around you knew it was his. It had Sydâs flair as well, seeping within the walls all the way to the kitchen beyond the frosted glass that cut through the brick like an art piece.
Your eyes flicked to the tangerines on the bar. Carmen followed where you were looking, but he already knew.
âYour favourite,â he said. âTheyâre for you. This is all with you in mind.âÂ
âPlease, Carm,â you breathed out. He took another step forward, bringing his hands to your forearms and hovering them there. Close, but not touching. As close as youâd been in years, but the ball was still in your court.
âIâm serious,â he reiterated. âI know it was a shock, me coming to NYC out of the blue, but thisâ all thisâ I could never do something like The Bear without you. Even if you werenât here at all right now, youâd still be part of this shit.â
You fell into his touch.
âBut I am,â you said. âI am here.â
Carm smiled again. There it wasâ dazzling.Â
âYes, you are.â
Gently, Carmen bridged the gap between you and placed a long overdue kiss on your cheek. He lingered there, just to feel your body next to his own, just to know that he wasnât imagining this moment.
You clutched onto his arms immediately, knowing how much this meant.
When he pulled away, he shot you with that same look from before heâd leaned in.Â
hi!! just read your fic âmaribelâ and wanted to ask where you got the inspiration for the title from? itâs my first name and i never see it used anywhere so i was completely freaked when i saw it lol
also, super fic!! your writing is absolutely beautiful!
omg i totally forgot about âmaribelâ !!! iâve been meaning to finish that fic. for ages i thought iâd posted part 2 but i guess i only imagined it in my head.
