I installed wordpress on my website and started migrating some stuff, mostly the art gallery. Since wp is database based I should probably shell out for the backup option now. So far Iâve done without, because static pages can just be re-uploaded in case of loss.
Iâm undecided whether to migrate all the old parts of the site that I havenât updated in years, or to just leave them as they are at present, or to separate them from what will become the âblogâ part, or to nuke them from orbit.
In case anyone wants to know, you can export your tumblr on the settings page with the âexportâ button on the bottom:
When you press âexportâ it will say âBackup processingâ and will appear stuck forever, but they send you a mail when the export is ready:
When you load the link in the mail, a download button appears:
The download itself was pretty slow.Â
The contains has all your posts, with the pictures and videos, and also any messages.

https://tumblr.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/231885248-Sensitive-content says nothing about external content, so it seems links to adult content are not disallowed for now.

whoâd have thought?
âYou have posts that contain adult content which violate our Community Guidelines.â
In retrospect over the past decades, I should have just installed wordpress on my website. I would have so much content by now.Â
There was the eazyboard forum that got deleted by hackers, the oyasumi forum that vanished, then livejournal (which had a comment system I absolutely loved) that after many good years insisted to become more like facebook, and then there was tumblr that has now turned fascist.
I think Iâll do that in the near future - reorganize my woefully neglected and outdated website with some modern content management tools and post there.
Hmm, I wonder if tumblr has a policy about posting links to offsite nsfw content...
The good news is that tumblr lets you export your entire content, including private messages, comments, and media as one big zipfile. (see Settings -> Export)
The not so good news is that the media links in the html pages still point to tumblr and have no relation to the filenames generated for the âmediaâÂ
So to make a truly offline version of your tumblr posts will require either a lot of manual copy-paste or some clever scripting.
I didn't realise it at first, but the tumblr purge is basically an Orwellian erasure of the last decade of queer and fandom history.
theyâll probably censor this too.
I opened a mastodon account because it was advertised as âopenâ but apparently theyâre in the same game:
Well, not completely, since your followers still see your âtootsâ...
