I absolutely love that Ride or Die chose a car chase culminating in a drive off a cliff as their climactic villain defeat.

Thelma and Louise is far and away the most well-known Girl BFF story, and the most comparable to Judith and Debbie’s situation. (Platonic bordering on a secret third thing resulting in an undying loyalty to each other above everything else in their lives). You could plausibly recommend Ride or Die to someone as “Thelma and Louise if Thelma was James Bond.”

Choosing a car chase, which Thelma and Louise did to subvert the genre and evoke action-movie themes, was brilliant. It added a tension to the scene in Ride or Die, which makes the viewer immediately think that these two best friends are going to ride off a cliff together and the series will end as ambiguously as its predecessor by leaving it unclear if they’ve died.

But Ride or Die is ALSO a demonstration of how the most common action tropes are subverted by this best friendship. So when Debbie pulls out the grappling hook, of course it’s the one unfamiliar with the genre that provides the solution. Ana, for all her training, cannot predict Debbie. The viewer, primed to expect a dramatic sail over the cliff in the grand tradition of female buddy movies, experienced the same surprise as Ana that she is defeated.

The comedy doubles when Debbie insists they check the body because she will tolerate no ambiguity in the way that Thelma and Louise did.

Ultimately, Ride or Die is exactly what it implies in the title: an ode to the bonds between women. Of course it evoked its most identifiable predecessor.

And then, of course, it immediately subverted it. A perfect climactic scene. I adore it and this show, and it deserves every bit of flowers I’m sure will come its way.
