‘I know you. You’re that girl he likes.' 

He knows. This person, speaking directly into her head, into her heart, has the answer that she’s been searching for. The days of grasping at straws and searching through photos and asking everyone and anyone—they’re about to end, and she can feel it. The empty space that was there is so close to being filled. 

‘Who? Please, a name!’ 

‘I’m Roxas.’ 

Their hearts beat together, in perfect sync. Once, and again. She feels like she’s falling from someplace too high, and the world around her is spinning. 

'Okay, Roxas.' 

It’s a start, but it isn’t right. It’s almost there, but it doesn’t quite fit or roll off of her tongue or resonate in her heart the way it’s supposed to. Their hearts beat again. 

‘But can you tell me his name?’

The feeling of falling grows stronger, and her knees begin to shake. Is Roxas falling? Is he going to be hurt? Is he disappearing? She can’t tell, or see, but she’s scared, and excited, and he’s neither. He almost sounds tired. Or is it relieved? It’s impossible to say.

Then, the paces of their hearts change, his beating right ahead of hers. He always was ahead of her, in races and in fighting and in arguing with Riku, even if he always didn’t win any of those things.  

‘You don’t remember my name? Thanks a lot, Kairi! Okay, I guess I can give you a hint…

—Starts with an ‘S!”

Kairi feels the ground beneath her feet, and the ocean air in her lungs, and when she opens her eyes again, she can see the twilight sky overhead as the sun falls beneath the horizon. Her world is whole again.
