one notable shift in depth of setting you can feel from the hobbit to lord of the rings is how, while reading the hobbit (especially the older editions), you can pretty viably interpret gandalf as being odin in disguise. which doesn't work at all for lord of the rings, because he's fully some other thing by that point

to be clear, I really like the specific characterisations of odin that tolkien draws influence from so I do appreciate that gandalf never stops being Odinic in that way (here meaning "curiously interested in small people for what a large person he is, and clearly taken to the pleasures of the lower world")

I really think we should stop saying "kid-friendly" and start saying "ad-friendly". We shouldn't indulge these companies and their excuses anymore. I also think that continuing to pretend that this is about "protecting the children" pushes a lot of the blame onto kids and teens, who don't have the political power to push through any of this censorship legislature. In many cases, this is true. Those who abuse children are often the same people who abuse women, people of color, LGBT people, disabled people, etc.

But that's not always the case. Many authoritarian parents would call themselves progressive. Many authoritarian parents are single issue activists who are openly against society's atrocious treatment of women but okay with society's atrocious treatment of children. Many authoritarian parents demand that their children have perfect morals while never questioning their own actions.
