Ya know what gets me about the title The Song of Achilles? The fact that the opening line of the Iliad is roughly translated as "Sing Muse of the rage of Achilles..." The Iliad is the song of Achilles' rage -- that's what the whole epic hinges on. But this book is the song of Achilles himself. And of course it is. This story is being told by Patroclus. He's singing the story of this man who he loves. Of course the song is of Achilles full stop. And what's more, Patroclus never could sing a song of Achilles' rage. That's not something he could ever know. There's no world where Patroclus ever sees Achilles' rage. So long as Patroclus is there to sing of Achilles, his rage does not exist. We only get Achilles himself. So yes, this book is not a song of rage -- that song has already been sung. This is the song of Achilles. Madeline Miller, you were crazy for that one.
