Aaaaand, bam! My contribution to Queen's Thief Appreciation Week! It's pen, watercolor, and colored pencil and was ultra fun to work on.

Last year I did an ominous piece of Gen falling, so this year I pivoted and did happily ever after.

It's got all your basic moving parts: Gen and Irene heading up to the crenellations,

Phresine loving on baby Hector while baby Eugenia drops a stolen earring that matches her dad's (with her mountain goat plushie nearby),

Helen and Sophos just being stupid cute with their wee heir, while the Magus still studies his map and Pol's sword leans on the wall beneath the three countries' banners,

Your pantheon of deities, with the Great Goddess at the center,

Teleus and Relius enjoying each other's company while Pheris (now with mobility aid!) ignores them (also there's a pigeon),

Costis and bespectacled Kamet with a plate of nut cakes, and a familiar author in the background with her stack of six books,

And, finally, our long-awaited elephant, while two of Gen's attendants search for their king.

Window scene Part ½

So I’ve been working on THIS monstrosity: one of my favorite scenes of Return of the Thief, it had me and my sisters in fits. It includes so many wonderful things – best bros sophos & gen committing minor acts of harassment to show affection, eugenides pulling a very thiefly parkour move, the attendants being Shook, the royal four having fun, attolia laughing (my heart!!), a striking tonal change at the end, and of course, the reference to Dite’s infamous catchy tune sung loudly & proudly by its main object of ridicule.

Queen’s Thief Note (II)

Eugenides & Irene - A little (quite long, actually) note and observation on the relationship development between these two from my view.

I. Gen doubted Irene’s feelings to be a possibility of a Goddess’s affliction, but eventually dismissed it.

II. When Irene retells Gen about Alyta’s tale, he started to reminisce his past on a similar encounter and wondered which desire was promised to him by the goddess.

Note: It’s obvious here that Gen’s desire of being a thief was safely excluded, since the goddess herself had acknowledged him as “Little Thief” when offering him his heart’s desire.

III. Though Gen appeared to still doubt Irene’s feelings to factors where he wondered if she even had a choice to settle with another other than himself since the beginning.

IV. Moira then gave an indication to Alyta’s promise through the two remarkable scenes (the orange tree and tamarisk / takima bush), thus all signs pointed towards his promised heart’s desire towards Irene. Even so, Moira reassured him that it was only “two threads that touched” during those moments that had led both of them together, where the events that came after were all the result of their own thoughts and actions without the idea of any form of “affliction” (as prior assumed in “Queen of Attolia”).

Note: A little recap on the said two scenes.

Note: And I came to an assumption where Alyta promised Gen his heart’s desire in return of ensuring Irene (her descendent) to be in his gentle care as they walk into the future together (to compensate with her cold and unforgiving past), as highlighted by Moira when she spoke to Gen.

Note: And of course, Irene came to acknowledge it as well.

And that’s my minor analysis on Gen and Irene. I happen to come across some who viewed their relationship as mainly “political” and having a “lack of chemistry”, where I just can’t help but disagree. Though for those who truly scrutinise into the details picked up throughout this series, I know that you share my thoughts on this matter as well.

“Atté, Atté,” a little later he murmured in her ear, the battle cry of the Attolians.

i know more readers are getting interested in these books, so here’s a short (slightly subjective) guide to the queen’s thief books by megan whalen turner, focused on the books more than the characters or events:

(it is best kept in mind that eugenides is the main character of the series, even if he isn’t the main character of every book in the series—and every new pov is ultimately exploratory into eugenides’ character in a new way.)

book 1 — the thief: most worldbuilding-heavy book. eugenides, our main boy, being himself as the prototype for the versions of eugenides we will come to read. no romance. lots of twists, setting up the reader’s expectations for the rest of the books.

book 2 — the queen of attolia: flat-out THE most romantic book. changed the game for the political-romantic-fantasy-intrigue genre everywhere. you will likely lose your mind reading this. every scene is striking and boldly written and every reread brings more understanding to light.

book 3 — the king of attolia: most wholesome, cutest book; absolutely deserves its status as the book most tqt fans consider their favourite. struggles of an entirely new flavour to those of the first two books; the way an outsider character narrates incisive glimpses of the characters we love in a way that makes you love the outsider character, too.

book 4 — a conspiracy of kings: this, along with book 5, are the two books most distant from eugenides. first pov of our absolute mad lad sophos! lots of exploration into extended first person stories that are later revealed to be told to a significant character. a new, sweet romance, iconic in its own way. a friendship that springs back to life all the more stronger for what it went through.

book 5 — thick as thieves: a different culture shown, along with a new, unexpected pov. a twist at the end that changes everything you’ve read so far fairly drastically. the characters we’ve loved prior to these new characters do appear, worry not, and the book is at its most satisfying in retrospect, after it has been finished.

book 6 — return of the thief: a fitting title, with a closer look at a new eugenides, striking as ever, yet very different from who he was at the beginning of the first book. the most emotional, serious book in the series, with the most satisfying and well-written ending a reader could ask for. deep explorations on disability in a new way, explored with the same realistic grace the books always handle the subject. ultimately brings in the series to a stunning close!

Thinking about the dance scene from the king of attolia, which is one of my absolute favorite scenes, I have always loved dancing and singing scenes in movies and books but this one is one of the best described dance scene ive read in a book.

And one of the things i like the most about their dance is that it's not a slow romantic dance. It's a passionately performed, but a common traditional dance, and an eddisian one at that. It was a choice done to spite gen, but gen and irene turn it into such a nice tribute to his homecountry.

And when gen askes irene if she knows the steps and she replies 'of course'... Of course she knows the steps. I dont remember if it's mentioned later/earlier, did she learn it as one of the courtly dances growing up, or did she learn it after their engagement ? If it's the former... it means that there were sometimes eddisian tunes played in the attolian court, maybe for important guests from eddis.

I'm pretty sure this has been discussed before and maybe it's unlikely but i'd like to think that irene was dancing to an edisian tune that day under the orange trees. Gen knows that irene can dance eddisian dances but this time she doesnt have to do it alone 😪😪
