people saying "awww byler fandom's first queerbait" or "it was never queerbait" about it need to sit the fuck down. esp the latter bc omg it is textbook queerbait. queerbaiting is about context beyond the media source; it is about the marketing, creator's and writer's and actor's comments, that allude toward a queer romance without the media itself actually committing to it. you can do this with a queer character, esp when said character's feelings are then used to prop up a straight relationship instead of being actualized in canon--and that doesn't mean the queer character and "straight" character have to get together! It just means the queer character's feelings have meaning for the character and exist beyond the straight character.

a queer character liking someone who is straight is not inherently queerbait. i repeat, it is about the context beyond the media source. the way so many actors and writers and the duffers themselves avoided just saying byler isn't canon, always ignored talking about mike's feelings to keep it unknown, netflix's official posts talking about different ways to say ily and showing byler or talking about them being bfs and stuff. all of that is queerbait.

so please, get off your goddamn petty high horse and shut the hell up.
