All I want in life is the motivation of a sports anime protagonist
IN THESE TIMES
Youāve been fired. According to your employerās data, your facial expressions showed you were insubordinate and not trustworthy. You also move your hands at a rate that is considered substandard. Other companies you may want to work for could receive this data, making it difficult for you to find other work in this field.
That may sound like a scenario straight out of a George Orwell novel, but itās the future many American workers could soon be facing.
In early February, media outlets reported that Amazon had received a patent for ultrasonic wristbands that could track the movement of warehouse workersā hands during their shifts. If workersā hands began moving in the wrong direction, the wristband would buzz, issuing an electronic corrective. If employed, this technology could easily be used to further surveil employees who already work under intense supervision.
Whole Foods, which is now owned by Amazon, recently instituted a complex and punitive inventory system where employees are graded based on everything from how quickly and effectively they stock shelves to how they report theft. The system is so harsh it reportedly causes employees enough stress to bring them to tears on a regular basis.
UPS drivers, who often operate individually on the road, are now becoming increasingly surveilled. Sensors in every UPS truck track when driversā seatbelts are put on, when doors open and close and when the engines start in order to monitor employee productivity at all times.
The technology company Steelcase has experimented with monitoring employeesā faces to judge their expressions. The company claims that this innovation, which monitors and analyzes workersā facial movements throughout the work day, is being used for research and to inform best practices on the job. Other companies are also taking interest in this kind of mood-observing technology, from Bank of America to Cubist Pharmaceuticals Inc.
These developments are part of a larger trend of workers being watched and judgedāoften at jobs that offer low pay and demand long hours. Beyond simply tracking worker performance, it is becoming more common for companies to monitor the emails and phone calls their employees make, analyzing personal traits along with output.
Some companies are now using monitoring techniquesāreferred to as āpeople analyticsāāto learn as much as they can about you, from your communication patterns to what types of websites you visit to how often you use the bathroom. This type of privacy invasion can cause employees immense stress, as they work with the constant knowledge that their boss is aware of their every behaviorāand able to use that against them as they see fit.
Lewis Maltby, president of the National Workrights Institute at Cornell University, tells In These Times that the level of surveillance workers are facing is increasing exponentially.
āIf you look at what some people call āpeople analytics,ā itās positively frightening,ā Maltby says. āPeople analytics devices get how often you talk, the tone of your voice, where you are every single second youāre at work, your body language, your facial expressions and something called āpatterns of interaction.āā He explains that some of these devices even record what employees say at work.

Stop this.
This was reported by both the Guardian and the Independent so itās very much a reality
so not to be marxist on main but the workers need to seize the means of production
millennial culture is being unable to eat dinner unless you are watching something at the same time. movie? tv show? twitch stream? doesnāt matter. just have to be able to click play
i mean if im by myself what else am i gonna do?? be alone with my thoughts?? out of the question
As a sniper I was not usually the victim of a traumatic event, but the perpetrator of violence and death. My actions in combat would have been more acceptable to me if I could cloak myself in the belief that the whole mission was for a greater good. Instead, I watched as the purpose of the mission slowly unraveled.
The non-propaganda version of what itās like to be an American sniper.
Excerpt; During my combat tour I never saw the Iraqis as āsavages.ā They were a friendly culture who believed in hospitality, and were sometimes positive to a fault. The people are proud of their history, education system and national identity. I have listened to children share old-soul wisdom, and I have watched adults laugh and play with the naivetĆ© of schoolboys. I met some incredible Iraqis during and after my deployment, and it is shameful to know that the movie has furthered ignorance that might put them in danger.
ā¦As a sniper I was not usually the victim of a traumatic event, but the perpetrator of violence and death. Instead, I watched as the purpose of the mission slowly unraveled.
I served in Iraq from 2004 to 2005. During that time, we started to realize there were no weapons of mass destruction, the 9/11 commission report determined that Iraq was not involved in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, false sovereignty was given to Iraq by Paul Bremer, the atrocities at Abu Ghraib were exposed, and the Battle of Fallujah was waged.
The destruction I took part in suddenly intersected with news that our reasons for waging war were untrue. The despicable conduct of those at Abu Ghraib was made more unforgivable by the honorable interactions I had with Iraqi civilians, and, together, it fueled the post-traumatic stress I struggle with today.
soldiers speaking out like this is pretty rare. dont ignore this post.
and yet, iraq has yet to start recovering from a war that was started to benefit the american economy. im glad this soldier is going as far as risking himself by speaking out like this. if more were like this, id certainly respect them more.
Japanās complete lack of understanding of declining birth rates in relation to its work culture reminds me a lot of how America has an assumption that millennials are killing industries when the truth is they are more frugal because of a lack of funds.
Both come from a conservative mindset that neglects the impact that a toxic work culture can have on society.
A 80+ hour work week in order to maintain financial stability isnāt exactly a solid ground to date people and eventually build a family from a healthy relationship.
A workforce comprised of 20 somethings that make between 20-40k a year in entry positions isnāt a good ground to build a reliable consumer base when a huge chunk of that is going to rent, utilities, car payments, and student loans.
This is a fascinating connection, you should write a paper on this
I am convinced that, in general, people wantĀ to have families. Many, if not most, would be happy to raise children. But in order to have children and raise them, especially to do so well, people need happy, stable relationships, financial security and time to devote to - you know - actually raising the child. You need both money and time to do that. If people are not given the time and means to be able to create social connections and strong relationships, to devote to parenthood and family, then they are not going to do it. How can they?
If anything Millennials are out there trying to prove that weāre better potential parents than our parents were, because weāre practicing safe sex, using contraception and abortion to make sure weāre not bringing a child into a life thatās a financial mess where weāre working too many hours to even raise the kid. Prior generations complain that we were raised by TV and video games, and that may be true, but the thing is, we know that the reason we had to be raised by TV and video games is that their workaholic butts were never home to do it themselves, and weāre not going to do that to the next kids. And that may mean not having kids until conditions are right.

This is utter and absolute bullshit and Caster Semenya and all the other women who will find themselves in her position in the future due to this absurd, discriminatory ruling deserve so much better. I am so angry and so sad for her.
@ terfs, this is another reason why transphobia is so toxic because it literally turns around and affects the very cis women you claim to care about so much. They are forcing Caster to lower her natural testosterone levels because of transphobia. Get your heads out of your asses, transphobia isnāt an isolated thing, it negatively affects all women not just trans women, weāre all in this misogynistic hellhole together
