After getting to this point, I think the only thing in this season that still doesn’t fully convince me is the whole dynamic between Zoro and Tashigi.

Pre–timeskip, their relationship is actually pretty important for Zoro’s character because Tashigi triggers his memories of Kuina in a really intense way. That resemblance carries a huge emotional weight for him, and it affects the way he reacts to her.

At the same time, it’s also a big part of why Tashigi takes her pursuit of Zoro so personally. She interprets his reactions and attitude as sexist, she genuinely thinks he’s looking down on her because she’s a woman and he thinks she’s weak. But that’s not actually what’s happening. The reality is that Zoro has this emotional baggage because she looks so much like Kuina, and he can’t interact with her the way he would with any other opponent. So there’s this huge misunderstanding between them that basically creates their whole dynamic and this is SO important for both characters individually.

And I feel like the live action hasn’t really preserved that. Maybe they’ll bring it up later, but right now it doesn’t feel emphasized enough how much Tashigi’s resemblance to Kuina actually triggers Zoro. Those of us who have read the manga or watched the anime can see it in Mackenyu’s performance, but someone who only watches the show might not pick up on it as clearly.

And they also haven’t included the moment where she accuses him of not killing her because she’s a woman, which I think is really important for Tashigi as a character. Because in that moment she’s projecting her own insecurities and the feeling that people in the Marines underestimate her because she’s a woman. That scene is important for both of them, just in different ways.

So maybe they’re saving it for the Alabasta arc or something, but honestly it would feel like a pretty big miss if the show never makes their dynamic clear or explains what it’s actually based on.
