I never for a moment supposed it was. How are your studies, Miss Karkaroff?
“My studies are great. Doing quite well in every subject.”
“It’s almost Halloween which means I get to dress as the goddess I am but it also means I need to buy presents for people who have everything. My life is so hard.”
“Honey, Halloween is like the one holiday where you actually don’t have to buy presents for people. You know that right...”
And a women who thinks rather highly of herself, I see.
“It’s not a crime to think highly of oneself. In fact most people don’t and have self esteem issues. Clearly it’s not a problem for me.”
“I won’t let anything bad happen to you, Ciss.”
The words were spoken in her bedroom at home. The windows that were typically hanging wide open were shut tightly. There were locks on them as well. They’d been fetching a second bottle of champagne when they heard multiple adult voices whispering above one another. As had been the case since they were children, they pressed their ears against the wall. Narcissa was always below Katrina as she was shorter. It was a natural fit. Still, the pair was used to hearing news a bit less apocalyptic than “The war will begin soon.”
So they laid in her bed, staring at the stars that had been enchanted into her ceiling that mimicked what the real solar system was doing. It was a scary truth, what they’d just heard. Certainly they had known about it, they both knew it was coming. There was a reason Narcissa had been covered in bruises from her training with Rodolphus and that was because the war would begin soon. Yet, hearing it from the mouth of someone who had no reason to lie, made it all a bit more real.
“I’m going to keep you safe too.” She promised her friend, breaking the prolonged silence that had come from the terrifying news. “No matter what happens, if you stay with me I promise I will keep you safe.” She finished off the flute of champagne and set it on the table beside her bed before laying on her side to face Katrina. It was easy, being there just as they had been for all those years, first children, now young adults who had to face realities harsher than any teenagers should have to. It was easy. Not only to smile and stare at the stars above but also to act as if their world wasn’t on the very edge of a very high cliff.
“Together forever.” Katrina said, lifting a pinky up for Narcissa to take.
As she looked at Katrina’s little, perfectly manicured pinky, she thought about what was coming. She thought about losing someone who had been with her since they were still styling there hair in little pigtails to look “cute.” She knew then and there that she couldn’t lose her. So she hooked her little, perfectly manicured pinky right around Katrina’s and nodded.
“Forever and always.”

“Yes, yes, you sound very apologetic.” More sarcasm. It came so easily when he was around her - the eye rolls, the dry tone, the sly digs. As though it was an inside joke, this hyperbolic show of snarkiness. “I’m not a Transfiguration kind of guy, I must say, so I can’t help you there, but if you get tired of that I’m sure we can find something more worthy of a sunday.” Regulus and Cissa were caught up with an assignment, Caroline was spending the day with other friends, Rodolphus was nowhere to be seen - he supposed that Katrina would make for… Entertaining company. It’s not like you have other options, he thought.
Katrina’s smile widened. “Well- I’m really not. If I was I would’ve looked into your eyes-maybe placed a hand on your shoulder to make sure you’re really okay. But waking you up really wasn’t a big concern of mine, so I don’t regret it at all” She laughed a little, looking back to her assignment, then to Rabastan again. “I think I have enough complete to make it by. What did you have in mind for activities?” She asked, raising an eyebrow. She was completely bored with the assignment, it had gotten too repetitive and she needed a break. She silently thanked Rabastan for getting her out of it.
He arched a brow at her, “Mysteries secrets, how fascinating,” he replied dryly, his tone teasing before shaking his head, “No, too loud here. The common room is usually clear ‘till noon on a Sunday.” His eyes were still bleary, his cheeks flushed with sleep - he hadn’t gotten much of it, despite his claims, and had spent most of the night tossing and turning.
“Well I’m sorry that I woke you. It’s not my fault this assignment requires me to try to turn a mouse into something.” She looked at the boy, studying him. “I can do much in the dormitory, and I thought this would be free.”
“That’s practically six in the morning on a weekend - do you not sleep, or something?” He grumbled, carding a hand through sleep-mussed hair. He crossed the room and dropped into the seat beside her, “Too loud downstairs to sleep up there.”
Katrina rolled her eyes. “I can’t reveal all of my secrets, but no last night I didn’t sleep. I have something due tomorrow and that’s more important.” She looked at the boy with a puzzled look. “Too loud in your dormitory?”
“Pardon me, but do you not realise what time it is? Must you be so loud?”
“It’s nine-thirty, Rabastan. Why are you in the common room anyway? Don’t you have a room nearby?”
❝ you seem very obsessed with length. ❞
Katrina stopped writing and put the tip of her quill in her mouth, giving Rabastan a grin. “Well- isn’t everyone. The longer the better they say,” She started her sentence. “And by length I strictly mean the length of essays. You can obviously put more information into longer essays.” She’d been working on her Charms essay for quite some time now, and it was getting down to her final thoughts. The parchament was getting extremely long now, and the boy had come up mentioning how she was concerned about length. It had been a funny comment, and she probably would’ve blushed if she hadn’t been so focused on finishing her scroll. She looked at the boy again, giving him an innocent look. “Why, were you concerned I was obsessed about some other kind of length? That’s positively dirty Rabastan.”
❝ am i crying or laughing? ❞
Katrina could barely tell herself what was happening. They pair was laughing so hard, tears were falling from her eyes. “Merlin, Ciss. Please tell me you saw that. Evan Rosier getting rejected. He looked so sad.” She said, laughing with her friend. It was nice to have someone around, to laugh with. “I can’t tell right now honestly. I think it’s laughing. One hundred percent laughing- because just look at him. He looks like a lost puppy dog.” She giggled some more, taking a drink of her water. She looked at her food, but eating was the last thing on her mind at the moment. “Anyways- have you seen the new Witch Weekly?”

“No kidding, I have family there. Where did you stay?” Xe nodded, “I agree, but I’ve got to say three is impressive.”
“We lived in Marseille. Beautiful city.” Katrina grinned. “Where is your family located?”
“Tomato, tomatoe,” Gideon says vaguely, rolling his eyes, “I love annoying you, you’re special to me, Katrina.”
“Gideon, I will hex you into next year. Run along.”
I was on my way to visit a professor, but I don’t believe we’ve had the chance to properly meet yet.
“Katrina Karkaroff. Heiress of the Karkaroff fortune. Originally from Russia.”
“First off, agree to disagree. Second off, Katrina Karoff, last I knew.”
"It’s Karkaroff. Nice try. You can run along now, and annoy someone else.”
Gideon laughs loudly, “You’re very cute when you’re angry, you know.”
“First off, gross. Second, you don’t know what or who you’re talking to.”
I’m afraid I’m not a staff member, Miss Karkaroff, so I don’t apply to your statement.
“I consider all adults staff members. Aurors and professors included.” She crossed her arms.·“Can I help you with anything?”
