yesterday i learned that trees communicate with each other and have an underground communication network held together by microscopic fungi that transport healing enzymes and carbon and wisdom from one tree to another. and mother trees will prioritize sending these useful things to baby trees of their same type and help them grow big and strong and protected. i love nature

In Defense of Jasper Jordan

I see a lot of people in this fandom who bash Jasper—saying things like “he’s annoying”, “he’s weak”, “he needs to shut up”, and even calling for his death on the show.  I wanted to throw some love for him out there for those of us who feel differently.

He’s Relatable:

The 100 is full of characters with superhuman strength.  But Jasper is just an average guy thrown into a series of impossible situations.  

Jasper may not have Bellamy’s self-sacrificing courage, Clarke’s leadership skills, or Raven’s grace under pressure—but he tries.  He tries so hard, from learning how to handle a gun, making gunpowder and helping Raven build the firebomb, and becoming the de facto leader in Mount Weather, rescuing ALIE infected Raven from Arkadia all by himself.  

None of these things are natural to him, but he still tries.  Yes, he’s damaged by it and it shows, but that doesn’t keep him from trying. Which is more than I, and frankly the vast majority of the fans who complain about his “weakness” would do in the same situation.  I love my super strong characters too, but I get so tired of the idea that the average nice guy is a whiny loser because he is not as brave/strong/confident as the others.

About Maya:

I see a lot of people complaining in particular about Jasper after Maya’s death—implying that he’s being melodramatic and that he didn’t really know her that long anyway.

For one thing—this is a show where Finn and Clarke fell in love almost immediately, Octavia was having secret meetings in the woods with a guy who kidnapped her, and Abby fell in love with a man who had tried to have her executed then had her publicly tortured just a few months before.  This is a fandom that shipped Bellamy and Echo after they had a handful of scenes together.  If you believe Clexa was real after that first kiss in season 2, consider they had fewer episodes together leading to that than Jasper and Maya had at that point.

Maya and Jasper spent an entire season together—from the season premiere to her heartbreaking death in his arms in the finale.  They went through stuff together, she turned against her own government for him, he underwent a blood transfusion to save her.  Their love was as real and legitimate as any other on this show.  Just because you happen to not like Jasper or Maya doesn’t change that.  Her death was the straw that broke poor Jasper’s back.  

P.S. Gina was real too.

About Jasper’s PTSD:

Seriously—this really pisses me off.  There is a lot of talk in this fandom about representation, and that talk is legitimate.  But mental illness is one of the most underrepresented issues out there.  

Every time some ignorant fan talks about how Jasper is annoying, weak, or that he should be “put out of his misery”, you are saying that about a real disease where real people have real suicidal thoughts.  

Yes, Jasper is a fictional character, but his behavior is based on the way real people with PTSD behave.  When you call Jasper whiny, weak, or annoying someone with a mental health issue who has acted in some of the same ways hears you calling them the same thing.  When you wish his character would be killed off the show, a real person hears that they are useless and should disappear too.  

You don’t have to like Jasper.  But hating on him for issues related to his mental health is harmful and perpetuates discrimination against people with mental health issues.  It needs to stop.

For the people who want The 100 Canceled just for Lexa's Death and poor story writing, Fuck You. You have no right to do that, okay sure maybe you do, but just because your favorite character died. Doesn't mean you have to hate on Jason and the cast. The cast is amazing at their job, so don't hate on these little cinnamon rolls. Be happy that they actually made another season, BE happy that their NOT dead in real life! Example: if Jasper dies this season, yes I'll admit, I'll be a bit upset. But I will not hate on Jason, or Devon. Ever. Because that's disrespectful and immature. Devon has done a fantabulous job, on playing the role of Jasper, and deserves respect for his talent. Yes, I'll be upset. But look on the bright side, he is alive in real life. And his character dying, means he can go and be in more movies and shows in the nearby future. Think of it that way, think of the positives that will come on of all this. At least Alicia (Lexa) is alive in real life, and is ready to be in more movies and shows in the future.
